1 Scope
This standard defines the minimum requirements for cross tension force and torque after welding
(fused joints) that, so far, have been defined in the product standards for weld nuts.
These requirements apply especially for
square weld nuts according to Volkswagen standards VW 604 49, VW 604 42, VW 604 32
hexagon weld nuts according to VW 604 55, VW 601 61, DIN 929
round weld nuts according to VW 603 43 (draft)
speed nuts according to VW 604 40
with measurements of M4 to M12 (metric standard screw thread), M12 x 1.5 to M16 x 1.5
QUELLE: NOLIS

(metric fine-pitch thread) and 7/16 20 UNF.

Also defined here is the minimum cross tension force for welded bolts and weld pins according to
DIN 34817, DIN EN ISO 13918 and VW 600 11 with dimensions of M4 to M12 (metric standard
screw thread) and M12 x 1.5 (metric fine-pitch thread).
This standard may also be applied to standard production or multi-purpose parts with three-point
or four-point projection weld or ring projection weld and drawn arc stud welding.

3 Definitions
The following definitions are valid for the application of this standard:

3.1 Minimum torque M

The strength of welded joints on weld nuts shall always first be tested with the minimum torque,
a cross tension force test only being resorted to in case of doubt. The minimum torque corresponds
to the torsion resistance of a welded joint.

3.2 Minimum cross tension force FKZ

The minimum cross tension force applies stress to the parts against the direction of the preload
force applied later.
Contrary to this, the minimum cross tension force for weld screws according to DIN EN ISO 13918
is applied in the direction of the assembly preload force.

3.3 Fused joints

Metallurgical joint between joining component (bolt/nut projection) and sheet metal.

4 Requirements

4.1 General requirements

The requirements applying for the following welded joints are listed in Table 1:
three-point or four-point projection welds, ring projection welds
welded bolts and weld pins for arc welding with drawn arc stud welding
Sheet steels are suitable for welding if the chemical composition permits a welded joint in
compliance with this standard that fulfills the respective requirements. For example, the
material 22 MnB5 according to TL 4225 could be employed. The selection of other material groups
is permissible in agreement with K-QS 32.

4.2 Test parameters for minimum cross tension force and minimum torque
After welding onto steel sheets, weld nuts, welded bolts and weld pins must withstand the minimum
cross tension forces listed in Table 1, weld nuts must also withstand the minimum torques as
stated in Table 1. The thread diameter shall provide a reference value in all cases.
The values given in Table 1 apply for sheet steels with a sheet thickness of 0.5 to 4 mm. Linear
interpolation shall apply for values up to the maximum sheet thickness. For higher sheet
thicknesses, the material must tear out of the joining plane; in such cases, the requirements for
maximum sheet thickness apply.
The minimum torque values apply for the welded joint and are calculated in such a manner that the
welded joint will not loosen even if the thread breaks. This requirement is important due to the
partially restricted accessibility, which makes a replacement in case of repairs a very intricate
procedure.
Page 3
VW 605 60: 2004-11

If the nut or bolt unplugs from the sheet metal, i.e. is torn out, during the minimum torque test
(possible with lower sheet thicknesses), lower minimum torques shall be specified in the
ASSY drawing.

5 Test

5.1 Metallurgical testing and visual inspection

For metallurgical testing, a transverse microsection shall be prepared (see also VW 011 03).
Metallurgical testing shall be performed after initial operation or transfer of the welding system,
after longer downtime periods or changes of parameters, but may also be performed for concurrent
production inspection.

5.2 Minimum cross tension force FKZ

The minimum cross tension force is applied according to Figure 1, testing corresponds to the
testing force test outlined in DIN EN 20898-2. Similar measurement methods are permissible if they
lead to the same results. Verification shall be provided by the user performing the test.
Testing must be conducted up to fracture.

5.3 Minimum torque M for weld nuts

Minimum torque shall be applied using a suitable, calibrated measurement device. Testing must be
conducted up to fracture. The test setup is illustrated schematically in Figure 2.
Minimum torque for round weld nuts can be determined with the aid of machined wrench bearing
surfaces that match the wall thickness. Alternatively, if the direct testing of a weld nut's welded joint
is not possible, the minimum cross tension force test can be performed.

5.4 Test frequency

Test frequency shall be determined by the responsible quality assurance department.
Test frequency shall be determined in such a manner as to make an early countering of impaired
welding processes due to wear possible.

5.5 Evaluation of the welded joint

The welded joint is OK, if
metallurgical testing provides a positive result (see VW 011 03),
unplugging according to VW 011 03 or sheet-tearing occurs,
the limit values given in Table 1 are adhered to.
A release of the welding process without positive results from metallurgical testing is impermissible.
