How to solve common keyboard and typing problems?

1. Some Letters Won't Type

Sometimes a tiny piece of debris can get stuck under a few of your keys. If you find that a
certain letter won’t type, you may be able to fix the problem by using a compressed air
duster and gently blowing off your keys.

2. Buttons Are Sticking

Keyboards get very dirty sometimes, especially if you tend to snack and type. You can
clean a keyboard yourself (laptop or desktop), but it may be safer to have it cleaned by a
professional.

3. Numbers Won't Type

There is a "numbers lock" button near your keypad that turns the pad on and off. If your
numbers won’t type, you’ve probably pressed this button by mistake.

4. Letters Are Typing Numbers

It can be scary to type words and see nothing but numbers appearing! This is probably an
easy fix, but the solution is different for every type of laptop. The problem is you have
"numlock" turned on, so you need to turn it off. This is sometimes done by pressing the
FN key and the NUMLOCK key at the same time.

5. Typing Over Letters

If you are editing a document and are surprised to find that you are suddenly typing over
words instead of inserting between words, you have accidentally pressed the "Insert"
button. Just press it again. That key is an either/or function, so depressing it once causes
it to insert text, and pressing it again causes it to replace text.

6. Cursor Is Jumping
This is one of the most frustrating problems of all, and it seems to be related to using a
laptop with Vista or Windows XP. One possible solution is adjusting your touchpad
settings. Secondly, you could "disable tapping during input." To find this option with XP,
go to:

 Control panel
 Mouse
 Advanced
 Advanced feature settings
 Tapping and feature settings
 Tapping settings
 Disable tapping

If this doesn’t work, you can try installing Touch freeze, a utility developed to disable
your touchpad while you are typing text.

7. Text Disappears Mysteriously

If you accidentally highlight a block of text and type any letter, you replace all the
selected when you type. This can happen in an instant, often without even noticing it. If
you find that a lot of your text has disappeared, try hitting the "undo" function several
times to see if your text reappears. If not, you can always hit redo to get back to where
you started.

8. Keyboard Keys Aren't Functioning

This isn't a common issue, but when it happens, either some or all keys stop working or
certain features of the keyboard such as backlighting may stop working. This can result
from a low battery, so try plugging the computer in. It can also result in form liquid in the
keyboard, causing the keys to short out. Use compressed air between the keys and let the
keyboard sit to dry for a while. Try using it again after it has dried completely.

9. Mouse pointers does not move smoothly

If the cursor movement of your mouse is not smooth, it is most likely caused by a dusty
sensor area or a dirty surface on which you use the mouse. Again, do wonders by
cleaning and sweeping both these parts. Remember to always use micro fibre cloth
without any chemicals, soapy water will do just fine.

Also, note that glossy surfaces such as glass or varnished wood, it can interfere with the
good functioning of your mouse, especially if it works with laser and optical technology.
Always use a good mouse mat or pad to optimize your mouse efficiency.

10. Mouse pointer freezes

It happens that the mouse cursor just freezes and stops working. In the kind of situations,
the problem is usually cause by an overworked computer rather than a faulty mouse. Try
to close some applications running in the background of your computer. Sometimes you
might not even be aware they are active. Ask someone who knows a little about computer
to tell you which one you can close safely without disturbing the smooth running of your
laptop or PC. Wait for a minute to see if the problem is solved.

If it is not, try to reboot your computer to see if it restores the good functioning of your
mouse. Sometimes closed applications need the computer to be restarted in order to fully
stop using its power.
11. Mouse does not Work at all?
Now if the above solutions did not resolve your issue, the problem could be caused by
either software or hardware related issues.

Software

Try to reinstall your mouse driver. It might just have crashed. It could also be that the last
update downloaded automatically by your PC was flawed. This might also need your
computer to be restarted.

Hardware

Check your cables, connections and ports. A bad wiring, faulty USB or PS/2 port or bad
IR wireless receiver could be the cause of your troubles. Try other devices on your ports
to make sure they are working properly.

12. Mouse pointer is to Fast or to Slow

Be reassured, this is not a serious trouble. It just comes from a bad adjustment. To solve
this, just follow these few steps:

 Go into the « Control Panel »,

 Choose « Hardware and Sound »,
 Select « Mouse Options »,
 Click on the « Pointer Options » tab.

There you can adapt the speed of your cursor movement according to your likes.

13. Problems with Double Click

Here again, we are not speaking about a proper issue but just an adjustment problem.
Same as for the speed of the cursor movement, go to the mouse options into the control
panel but this time, click on the « Button » tab. There you will be able to choose the
speed level of the double click feature.

Now, if you still face issues with your mouse after trying all these solutions, you can use
the commenting part of this page to describe the symptoms, we would love to help you
find a solution. But to be honest, at that point, it is most likely that your best bet is to
replace the mouse.
