Electrical Power Supply - Test


SMCS - 1401-038

Use this procedure to troubleshoot the electrical system if a problem is suspected with the power to the
engines Electronic Control Module (ECM). Use this procedure if any of the diagnostic codes in Table 1 is
active or easily repeated.

The engine ECM requires the keyswitch to be in the ON position in order to maintain communications with
Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET).

1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and Results: The connectors and wiring appear

2. Check the Voltage to the ECM
The problem may be intermittent. If the
problem is intermittent, refer to
A. Disconnect the ECM connector J1/P1.
Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors -
Inspect".
B. Restore the electrical power to the ECM.

Result: The charging system is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 4.


3. Check the Charging Circuit
Result: The charging system is not OK.
A. Turn the main disconnect switch to the

OFF position. There is a problem with the charging
circuit
system. Make the necessary repairs. Refer
A. Check the charging circuit. to Special Instruction, REHS0354,
"Charging System Troubleshooting".
Verify that the repair eliminated the
problem.

4. Load Test the Battery Load test Result: The battery voltage is low or the
battery did not pass the load test.
A. Load-test the battery. Refer to Systems
Operation and Testing and Adjusting, Repair: Recharge or replace the faulty
"Battery - Test" batteries.
Verify that the repair eliminated the
problem.

Result: The batteries pass the load test.


The measured voltage is between 11.5
VDC and 13.5 VDC for a 12 v system. The
measured voltage is between 23.0 VDC
and 27.0 VDC for a 24 v system.
Proceed to Test Step 5

Result: The voltage is 24 ± 3 VDC.


5. Check the Voltage at the ECM Relay
Proceed to Test Step 6
A. Remove the wire from terminal 30 of the
ECM relay . Result: The voltage is not 24 ± 3 VDC.

B. Restore the electrical power to the ECM. Repair: If voltage is present at the breaker
for the ECM, repair the wire between the
C. Measure the voltage from the wire to the ECM relay breaker for the ECM and the ECM relay .

6. Check the Voltage at Terminal 87A of
