LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

1st Quarter, Week 1 - (Illustrates quadratic equations)

A quadratic equation in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2 that can be written in the
standard form ax 2 +bx +c=0 , where a,b, and c are real numbers and a≠0.

In the said equation, ax^2 is the quadratic term, bx is the linear term, and c is the constant term.

Example:

3 x 2+7 x−8=0 is a quadratic equation, where a=3, b=7, and c=-8.

Activity 1

Identify which of the following equations are quadratic and which are not. Write YES on the space provided if
it is a quadratic equation and write NO if it is not.
1
YES 1.) x 2+ 9 x−10=0 NO 4.) ( b−4 )=3
2
YES 2.) 4 +r 2=−4 r YES 5.) ( r +2 ) ( r−7 )=21

NO 3.) 2 m+ 7=15

Activity 2

Activity 3

Tell whether or not each of the following situations illustrates quadratic equations. Justify your answer by
representing each situation by a mathematical sentence.

(Choose your own variable to represent the unknown quantity).

1) The length of a rectangular garden is 5 more than the width. The area is 30 square units.
Let x be the width
Quadratic Equation, x (x+5) = 30
2) A rectangle’s length has a measurement of 24 more than two times the width and the area is 1240
square meters.
Let x be the width
Quadratic Equation, x (2x+24) = 1240
3) Seven years ago, Kim’s age was half of the age she will be in 9 years.
Let x be the Kim’s age (23)
Non - Quadratic Equation, x - 7 = 0.5 or 1/2(x+9)
4) Gerald can put a new roof on a house three times faster than George. Working together they can roof
a house in 3 days.

3.) Seven years ago, Kim’s age was half of the
1.) x (7-3x) + 4 = 10 age she will be in 9 years.
2.) 12r - 21 = 2x2
Age = 23
= 7x – 3x2 + 4 = 10
12r - 21 - 2x2 = 0
-10 = -10 23 - 7 = 16
Standard form = -2x 2 + 12r - 21 = 0
7x - 3x2 + 4 - 10 = 0 23 + 9 = 32

7x - 3x2 - 6 = 0 16 + 16 = 32

3x - 12x + 5x - 20 = 0 6x2 + 24x + 24 = 30 108
Standard form = 3x2- 7x - 20 = 0 -30 = -30
