CLASSIFICATIONS OF RECREATION
Objectives:
Students should be able to:
Identify the types of recreational activities
Differentiate the two categories of recreation
Enumerate various activities under outdoor and indoor recreation
II.
TYPES OF RECREATION
Breaking recreation down into various areas, classifications, or types might be done in
numerous ways. The listing below represents one of the ways that recreation could be
8
categorized for individuals, groups, or leaders planning programs. The listing is shown in
random order and does not indicate any order of importance.
Physical activities (sports, games, fitness)
1.1. Active Recreation (Individual, Dual, Team Sports)
Parents needs to pay attention on the lifestyle habits of their children to prevent them
from growing up to become unhealthy adults. As parents, they should lead by example by
living an active lifestyle, eating healthy and involving themselves in physical activities.
Keeping physically active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle; but unfortunately
many of us feel we don't have the time or motivation to exercise.
A short 30 minute moderate exercise a day can give fantastic health benefits, and there
should be no cause for worry because the 30 minute can be broken down into 10 min
blocks, making the daily exercises easier to achieve for busy people.
Individual activity or any activity done with a partner brings together benefits to health.
Running, walking, swimming or playing golf, badminton, table tennis are the examples of
recreational sports. Students should take advantage of the physical education classes
where they provide all kinds of active recreation activities.
To promote individual and social fitness, we should analyze these question: “Why should
I be active?”
To answer these question are health benefits. We must be active to:
Active recreation provides a break from the routinely or monotonous way of life. It refers
to the time spent in an activity one loves to do. Recreational activities give enjoyment to
a person and provide relaxation to both body and mind.
When a person indulges in an active recreation like sports, he develops his social life and
he’s inspired to do the activity regularly. Team games or sports bring people together and
put life into their leisure. It becomes conscious of a lifestyle that is geared towards health
and wellness.

3. Join clubs to create - community building by joining a fun run, walkathon, hiking
and nature walking
4. Social Activities (parties, banquets, picnics)
3. Arts and crafts activities (painting, scrapbooking, ceramics, woodworking)
4. Dramatic Activities (plays, puppetry, skits)
5. Musical Activities (singing, bands)
6. Cultural Activities (Art appreciation, music appreciation, panels, discussion
groups)
7. Activities (fun in doing things for others)
A. Outdoor
Outdoor recreation provide us with the means to exercise and hence happen to be
one of the best forms of recreation. Organized recreational activities are often planned by
private clubs or government organization. Sports, cultural activities and social gatherings
are some of the organized ones. Clubs and recreation centers offer a variety of
recreational programs for people of different ages and varied interests.
Gardening
Cycling
1. Gardening/Tree Planting
Recreational gardening can be social and private. Gardening spots are important in
shared living environments. It is a sensory experience involving touch, sight, and smell.
Gardening is FUN but it can be a CHALLENGE, too. These activities also encourage
an active interest in the natural world. In every gardening activity, children get involved
in a healthy project while learning about nature.
Starting a school garden is a very good idea for students. They learn to take care of
the environment, beautify a community, and think of plants to put in gardens including
herbs, vegetables, and trees. When choosing plants, think about color, scent, shape, and
feel of flowers. Choose plants that are organic and useful like basil, tomatoes, and others.
Remember, being outside is necessary for well-being and enjoyment of life itself.
Always enjoy a nature walk.
1. Be physically active
2. Feel unrestrained
11
Hiking is the preferred term, in Canada and the United States, for a long, vigorous
walk, usually on trails (footpaths), in the countryside, while the word walking is used for
shorter, particularly urban walks. Camping may be combined with hiking. Camping is an
outdoor activity involving overnight stays away from home in a shelter, such as a tent or
a recreational vehicle. Typically participants leave developed areas to spend time
outdoors in more natural ones in pursuit of activities providing them enjoyment. To be
regarded as "camping" a minimum of one night is spent outdoors, distinguishing it from
day-tripping, picnicking, and other similarly short-term recreational activities. Camping
can be enjoyed through all four seasons.
3. Cycling
as “cyclists", "bikers", or
less commonly, as
"bicyclists". Apart from
two-wheeled bicycles,
"cycling" also includes
the riding
of unicycles, tricycles, q
uadracycles, recumbent and similar human-powered vehicles (HPVs).
Bicycles were introduced in the 19th century and now number approximately one billion
worldwide. They are the principal means of transportation in many parts of the world.

Module III
BOARD GAMES
Objectives:
Students should be able to:
Identify the concept of Board Games
Enumerate kinds of Board Games
Value the role of Board game as part of recreation
17
III. BOARD GAMES
Board game is a game that involves counters or pieces moved or placed on a pre-
marked surface or board according to set of rules. It is a tabletop game that involves
counters or pieces moved or placed on a pre-marked surface or “board”, according to a
set of rules. Some games can be based on pure strategy or chance (like rolling of dice) or
mixture of two. Board games have been played in most culture and society throughout
history.
There are varieties of board game, including:
1. Chinese Checkers
The objective of this game is to race one’s pieces across the hexagram-shaped game
board into “Home” (the corner of the star opposite the starting corner).
- This is played by two, three, four, or six people.
- The game uses single-step move or moves with a jump over other pieces.
- The player who completes one end first wins the game.
- The pieces here make use of marbles.
18
3. Scrabble
To start the game, the players with a seven drawn letter tiles form words on the game
board. The next player forms or connects another word and all other follow.
The score is earned by adding the corresponding numbers on each tile of every word
formed. If words cannot be formed anymore at the end of the game, the players count the
remaining tiles with their equivalent number and deduct the number from their score.
The person with the highest score wins the scrabble game.
4.Traditional Bingo
The columns are labeled from left to right with the letters B I N G O with one
exception (the center space is “free”
19
5. Chess
Chess was created as an invitation to warfare. Its sole aim is to checkmate the
opponent’s king. Any hardship or sacrifice is worthwhile if that end is achieved.
The game originated in the age of despotic rulers when it was wise not to offend
monarchs. The king is never actually taken, and the game ends if his capture cannot be
avoided. The queen and bishop are relatively recent arrivals on the battlefield, having
replaced a counselor and an elephant respectively. The game began in the East where
elephants were used in military campaigns. The other elements were foot soldiers
(pawns), cavalry (knights), and chariots (rooks).
It is played on a board of 64 squares between two players - one white and the other,
black. Each team has 16 chessmen. Both sides have exactly the same number and type of
men. There is no element of chance, as everything can be seen. White begins the game by
making one move, then black counter attacks, and so on until the game ends and one
player is declared a winner. Sometimes the game ends in a draw.
I. The Board
The board must be placed so that on the first row, each player’s right hand corner
square is white. The nature of the game is not changed if the board is placed the other
ways, but the laws of chess laid down this convention.
Each side has two single pieces: the king and the queen. While the king is the most
important piece, it is far from the being the most powerful. The queen is also potent. Pairs
of bishops, knights, and rooks, and the eight paws complete the team pieces.
The cornerstones of the array are the rooks, one on each end of the rank, like towers
in a fortress, as with all the pairs, one begins on dark squares, one on light. Place one
rook in each corner of first rank.
The knights stand on the first rank, next to the rooks. Of all the chess pieces, these
look most directional but whichever way they are facing has no effect on their power.
The bishops stand next to the knights, nearest the center of the board. The bishops,
king and queen all have similar pedestals but their heads have different shapes.
The queen stands on the square that is her color. The usual way to remember this is
“the queen takes her own color.” The black queen is placed on the central black square
facing the white queen on the same file.
20
e. King Facing
The king stands on the remaining central square. From the white side of the board,
the queen is to the left of the king, and from the black side, the queen is to the right. The
king is usually the tallest piece, distinguished by a cross at the top of the piece.
The second rank is full of pawns, one in front of each piece. Although they are the
same in appearance, you will soon learn that there is a hierarchy among them.
a. Rook
The rook can move any distance in either direction on the rank or file on which it
stands, until it reaches an occupied square. If an enemy man stands in its path, the rook
may capture it by going onto that square and removing the enemy from the board.
b. Bishop
The bishop moves diagonally, one bishop from each side moves only on dark squares
and the other only on light squares. The bishop captures in the same manner as the rook,
displacing the enemy from its square and the game.
c. Queen
The queen moves on ranks, files, or diagonals on any one move. However, the queen can
never move as a mixture of both rook and bishop.
d. Knights
21
Assessment A
2. If white has the first move, where can the knight go? What capture could it make?
3. White’s knight has just moved, which men are attacked? How many squares can the knight
reach from this square? Can black capture the night?
4. If it is white’s turn to play, where can the white bishop move? Where can the black bishop
move if it is black’s turn?
5. Where can the white rook move if it is the white’s turn to play? If it is the black’s turn, where
can the black rook move? How many squares are available to each?
22
II. Answer the following:
1. Aside from the King and Queen, what other pieces complete the chess team?
