1. Who is Sigmund Freud


o Life
Freud was born on 6 May 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia (now Pribor in the Czech Republic). His father was
a merchant. The family moved to Leipzig and then settled in Vienna, where Freud was educated. Freud's
family were Jewish but he was himself non-practising.

o Studies
Freud became very interested in medical and scientific research, and went on to
study medicine at the University of Vienna. While studying, Freud developed a particular
fascination with neurology, and later trained in neuropathology at the Vienna General Hospital.
o Contribution in psychology
Psychoanalysis is based on Freud's theory that people can experience catharsis and gain
insight into their state of mind by bringing the content of the unconscious into conscious
awareness. Through this process, a person can find relief from psychological distress.

2. What is psychoanalytical approach?


The Approach: Psychoanalytic Perspective. In the psychoanalytic
approach, the focus is on the unconscious mind rather than the
conscious mind. It is built on the foundational idea that your behavior is
determined by experiences from your past that are lodged in your
unconscious mind.
