SOCIAL FUNCTION To amuse/entertain and to deal with actual or vicarious experience in different ways. GENERIC STRUCTURES Orientation : sets the scene and introduces the participants (Who, Where, When).
Complication : a crisis arises.
The story continues here. Usually, there will be an event or a sequence of events that lead the characters into a complication (some form of conflict that disrupts the normal event). Resolution : the crisis is resolved, for better for worse. The problem starts to get resolved. Reorientation : At other times the resolution is left for the readers to decide. (Optional) LANGUAGE FEATURES Focus on specific and usually individualized participants. Use of Material Processes, behavioral process, and verbal process. (Action Verbs) Use of Relational Processes and Mental Processes. Use of Temporal Conjunctions and Temporal Circumstances (Connectors related to Time and Sequence). Use of Past Tense Adjectives and Adverbs Pronouns Punctuation Compound and Complex Sentences. Reported Speech.
PROCESS
Processes are realized by verbs. There are some types of processes. A. Non-Relational Processes : Processes of Doing. 1. Material Processes are processes of material doing. They could answer the questions What did X do? or What happened to X? Example: drop, write, went, broke etc. 2. Mental Processes are processes of sensing. There are 3 types: a. Affective/reactive (feeling) : like, hate,etc. b. Cognitive (thinking) : understand, know, realize, etc. c. Perceptive (perceiving through 5 senses) : smell, hear, touch, etc. 3. Behavioural Processes are processes of physiological and psychological looking : breathing, dreaming, smiling,lives,snores,threw, etc. 4. Verbal Processes are processes of saying, or symbolically signaling : said, scream, explain, tell,ask,cry, etc. 5. B. Relational Processes : Processes of Being and Having. Relational processes involve states of being including having. Example: is, may be, has, appear, etc.
C. Existential Processes are processes of existence.
