Frequency Demodulation:
FM demodulation is a key process in the reception of a
frequency modulated signal. Once the signal has been received, filtered and
amplified, it is necessary to recover the original modulation from the carrier. It is this
process that is called demodulation or detection.
How do you demodulate an FM signal?
A simple and effective FM demodulation technique involves a high-pass filter (for
FM-to-AM conversion) followed by an AM demodulator. A high-pass-filter-
based FM demodulator is preceded by a limiter to prevent amplitude variations
from contributing error to the demodulated signal.
Problem Explanation:
In the given problem we are required to design the FM
Demodulator in which Radio Frequency signal is given and then some noise is
added into it and we are required to shown the spectrum of the given RF signal
after passing through the filters. In this problem we are using passband filter
because it gives the easily passage to the frequencies which is given within the
range.
Questions & Answers
1) Draw a block diagram of FM demodulator designed and implement it in
MATLAB?
Answer:
Here are some results which we are going to show are the Modulated signal
and then Demodulated Signal.
Here the Gain is showing after the signal is modulated.

2) What is the approximate bandwidth of x(t)? Is Fs= 2.048MHz an adequate

sampling frequency?
Ans: The approximate bandwidth of x(t) is given as of 200Khz and if we talk about
the sampling frequency of RF signal then we know its range lies in between 300GHz
to as low as 9KHz, so the sampling frequency of 2.048MHz is adequate.
3) Sketch the frequency response of the differentiator? Is the designed phase is
linear or not?
Ans: The frequency response( magnitude, phase and group delay ) response is given
as:

Group Delay response is given as,

We can see that the phase response of the differentiator is linear, it shows no
discontinuity at the sampling frequency of 2.048MHz.
4) How many stages of decimator?
Ans: As we know the decimation process is used to reduce the sampling rate. So
there are two stages of decimator and the sampling rate is reducing, it means our
sampling frequency would not be of 2.048MHz, it will be in the range of RF signal,
means it will not go less than 9KHz.
