EQUILIBRIUM

Equilibrium
Equilibrium is a condition where there is no
change in the state of motion of a body
Static equilibrium
Translational equilibrium

ECE Department, TUP Manila Statics of Rigid Bodies Timothy M. Amado, ECE 1st Sem
Conditions of Equilibrium
First Condition of Equilibrium
The net force acting on a body in equilibrium
must be zero

Second Condition of Equilibrium

The net moment (torque) acting on a body in
equilibrium must be zero

Equations for Equilibrium
The following equations are typically used in
solving problems in equilibrium:

Free Body Diagram: Support Reactions
In analysis of rigid bodies in equilibrium,
each type of support give specific type of
reaction:

Problem 1
Determine the horizontal and vertical
components of reaction on the beam caused
by the pin at B and the rocker at A as
shown. Neglect the weight of the beam.

Bx = 424 N
By = 405 N
Ay = 319 N

Problem 2
The homogeneous 6-m bar AB is supported in the vertical
plane by rollers at A and B and by a cable at C. The mass
of the bar is 50 kg. Solve for the reactions of A and B and
tension of C.

Problem 3
The member shown is pin connected at A and
rests against a smooth support at B . Determine
the horizontal and vertical components of reaction
at the pin A .

Ax = 100 N
Ay = 233 N
NB = 200 N

Problem 4
The 50-kg homogeneous smooth sphere rests on
the 30o incline A and bears against the smooth
vertical wall B. Calculate the contact forces at A
and B.

RA = 566 N
RB = 283 N

Problem 5
The 500-kg uniform beam is subjected to the three
external loads shown. Compute the reactions at
the support point O.

Ox = 1.5 kN
Oy = 6.1 kN
MO = 7.6 kN-m CCW

Problem 6
Determine the horizontal and vertical
components of reaction at the pin A and the
reaction on the beam at C

C = 11.3 kN
Ay = 4 kN
Ax = 8 kN

SEATWORK

ECE Department, TUP Manila Statics of Rigid Bodies Timothy M. Amado, ECE 1st Sem
1. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of
reaction on the member at the pin A , and the normal
reaction at the roller B.

2. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of

reaction at the pin A and the reaction of the rocker B on
the beam.
