DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Contrast
 Occurs when two or more visual elements in a composition are different.
 To generate impact, highlight importance, create exciting graphics, create visual elements and
dynamics.

Hierarchy
 Control of visual information in an arrangement or presentation to imply importance.
 Influences the order in which the human eye perceives what it sees.

Hierarchy use for the following:


 Add structure
 Create visual organization
 Create direction
 Add emphasis
 Help a viewer navigate and digest information easily

Alignment
 Is the placement of visual elements so they line up in composition.

Alignment use for the following:


 Organize elements
 Group elements
 Create balance
 Create structure
 Create connections between elements
 Create a sharp and clear outcome

Two alignment principles:


 Edge alignment
 Either to the left or to the right to the top or bottom.
 Center alignment
 it states is aligned to a center line down the middle or cross the horizontal.

Balance
 is the visual weight of elements in a composition.

Balance use by the following:


 add stability
 add structure
 create emphasis
 create dynamics
Three main types of balance:
 Symmetrical balance
 Mirror image balance
 Asymmetrical balance
 Not identical on both sides of a central line.
 More dynamic
 Radial balance
 Where all elements radiate out from a center point in a circular passion.

Proximity
 Grouping and shaping of objects in a composition.

Proximity use in the following:


 To create connections
 Dispel connections
