We identified some textual features of the 'HOPE' artwork by Shepard Fairey earlier and
considered Fairey’s intentions in using those features to ‘shape meaning’ (Lang A
criteria).
A source (and news story) to add to your interpretation of this Fairey piece
Click on and read this source related to Fairey’s ‘Hope’ text (controversy surrounding
it..ownership..plagiarism vs inspiration). Feel free to discuss the below questions with
people near you too. As or after you read, answer these questions (on your own doc,
individually) in full sentences. I’ll give you a time limit for this, then upload your
responses to your LP.

 Did Fairey plagiarize or was he just inspired by the photo in your view?
Fairey artwork was more in the grey area my view. He took the picture as the basis for his artwork and
improvised the artwork according to his understanding about the situation. He should have asked for
permission to the photographer out of respect. It is more difficult to make an artwork from the memory.

 Is there more potential for this to happen in the arts (especially visual arts including film, music, ads,
paintings, photography..) vs other areas (like the sciences), or not, and do you think there is a clear
difference between plagiarism and inspiration..or is it sometimes a ‘grey area’?  Give examples if
you know any.
This happens a lot in the arts vs other science because there are times when artist get inspired or just
plagiarize because the artist feels it is good or it is in the grey area where the artist improvises the
inspiration or bases. Many times, there is a difference between plagiarism and inspiration but sometimes
it is more of a grey area.
In science there is no grey area because there are more facts than any inspiration.

 Does this source – and the news story related to it, how Fairey used a photo as the basis for his
artwork - change your opinion on Fairey as an artist from what you know of him and his artwork so
far? Explain your answer.
No I don’t really think it changes my idea of what Fairey is. He often tries to show what is happening in
America as a whole, he addresses what is good and what is not and interprets the way he feels will portray
the most information or idea what he is thinking.
