Traits of a Good Teacher in Pedagogical Point of View

A good teacher is passionate and dedicated to their work and is committed to building a

strong teacher-student relationship. A good teacher inspires and demonstrates good student

attributes (Rizvi et al., 2021). A good teacher should be able to shape and enlighten students to

succeed in education and future life. Therefore this study will discuss the traits of a good teacher

from a pedagogical point of view based on the following categories:

1. Appearance

A teacher with a pleasing appearance greatly impacts the students since teachers are

role models (Hafizi et al., 2020). Teachers should be neat and follow the acceptable dress

code. Teachers should be well groomed all the time to look presentable in class. Also, the

teacher should be warm, accessible, sympathetic and supportive to the students. A good

teacher should also possess emotional intelligence to remain calm during irritable

circumstances. A good teacher should be social and freely interact with the students to build

a strong connection (Pennington, 2021). A good teacher should also be flexible and possess

the energy to participate effectively in learning activities.

2. Character /Traits

A good teacher should be patient and approachable to manage the students

effectively. The teacher should be patient enough to listen to the students and make them

comfortable to open up and discuss what the students are going through. A good teacher

should be caring and friendly to the students and always mind their well–being (McGraw &
3

Fish, 2018). A good teacher should also be enthusiastic and show interest in all the learning

activities to motivate the full participation of the learners. A good teacher should also

practice fairness in solving classroom management issues and dealing with classroom work.

A good teacher should possess strong communication skills and be able to articulate ideas

effectively. Good communication skills also enable the teacher to be able to approach the

parent and discuss the progress of the students in terms of class work and discipline (Levy-

Feldman, 2018). A good teacher should also be equipped with knowledge to be able to tackle

questions effectively and also be able to make wise decisions that will benefit the students. A

good teacher should also be disciplined and act professionally. Discipline enables the teacher

to implement the curriculum efficiently and other responsibilities of managing the

class ;hence the teacher gains respect from the learners and the parents.

3. Expertise and professional qualification

A good teacher should have diverse knowledge and passion for teaching. The teacher

should have a good understanding of the subject they teach and be passionate about sharing the

knowledge with the students (Ozdemir & Beceren, 2018). A good teacher should have good

listening skills in order to facilitate learning activities and interact effectively with the students.

A good teacher should also have organizational skills and always prepare their lessons and

learning materials on time. A good teacher should also possess good communication skills which

are vital in conducting successful lessons and fostering active classroom participation in learning

activities and discussions. A good teacher should also be creative in order to keep the students

engaged and inspire them to try new things (TeHeBa, 2018).

4. Effectiveness in teaching and learning

A good teacher should have high expectations of the students and always encourage them

to realize their potential and to believe in their goals. A good teacher should also be optimistic,

recognise the hard work of the students and monitor their progress every day. A good teacher

should also have a good lesson plan and be prepared to meet the objectives of every lesson

(Sarode, 2018). A good teacher should also ensure the students have good knowledge of the

classroom content by assessing students and giving assignments. A good teacher should also

create a good learning climate where students actively participate in classwork and share

knowledge among them.

Assignment 2

Based on the video that you have watched in module week two, share your thoughts

and views in the discussion section below.

1. What type of teaching styles you have and prefer?

There are various teaching styles; Authority, demonstrator, facilitator, delegator and

hybrid style. I prefer to use the facilitator style since it is activity-based and encourages self –

learning in the classroom through interactions between the teacher and the students.

2. Do you agree with the speaker’s point of view?

I agee with the speakers point of view because teachers are supposed to implement

the skills in the 21st century learning, that is, collaboration, communication, critical thinking

and creativity which ensures that students are equipped with the relevant skills and

knowledge. A student centered classroom gives the teacher a platform to coach, nurture and

mentor the students. Teachers should have passion for their work and love for the students

and give the students the right to make choices.

3. Share your experience in incorporating art and science in your teaching

approach.

Incorporating art and science in facilitator style of teaching is very effective since the

students are actively involved in the learning activity. Students develop a deeper

understanding of art and science is able to acquire skills such as problem-solving and self-

discovery.

Conclusion

In conclusion, teachers are role models to the students and they should possess qualities

that can be emulated by the students. A good teacher inspires and nurtures the students to be

successful in academic work as well as future work. A good teacher should therefore have a neat

appearance and always appear presentable to the students. The teacher should also possess

virtues such as kindness, patience, trustworthiness and caring in order to relate well with the
6

students. A good teacher should also have professional knowledge and creativity in order to be

successful in their career.
