Washington that focuses on e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and
artificial intelligence. It is considered one of the Big Four tech companies, alongside
Google, Apple, and Facebook. Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994, and the
company began as an online marketplace for books but later expanded to sell
electronics, software, video games, apparel, furniture, food, toys, and jewelry. In 2015,
Amazon surpassed Walmart as the most valuable retailer in the United States by market
capitalization. In 2017, Amazon acquired Whole Foods Market for $13.4 billion, which
vastly increased Amazon's presence as a brick-and-mortar retailer. The acquisition was
interpreted by some as a direct attempt to challenge Walmart's traditional retail stores. In
1994, Jeff Bezos incorporated Amazon.com, Inc. in Washington State with the goal of
selling items online starting with books but eventually expanding to much more. He had
quit his job as a senior vice president at D. E. Shaw & Co., a Wall Street firm, on
September 4, 1994, to found Amazon. His initial business plan was to build a "virtual
bookstore" that would sell books online and route customers to physical bookstores for
pick-up. In 1998, Amazon expanded beyond books and became an online retailer for a
wide variety of consumer products, selling everything from CDs and DVDs to clothes,
toys, and food. In 2002, Amazon introduced Amazon Web Services (AWS), a cloud
computing platform that would later grow to be one of the company's biggest revenue
sources. In 2006, Amazon launched Amazon Prime, a subscription service that gave
customers free two-day shipping on millions of items. In 2015, Amazon surpassed
Walmart as the most valuable retailer in the United States by market capitalization. In
2017, Amazon acquired Whole Foods Market for $13.4 billion, which vastly increased
Amazon's presence as a brick-and-mortar retailer. The acquisition was interpreted by
some as a direct attempt to challenge Walmart's traditional retail stores. Amazon is the
