iii) Write down Student ID, Course number and put your signature on top of every
single page of the answer script.
iv) Write down page number at the bottom of every page of the answer script.
v) Upload the scan copy of your answer script in PDF format through provided
google form at the respective course site (i.e., google classroom) using
institutional email within 01:00 PM (27-05-2021). Uploading clear and
readable scan copy (uncorrupted) is your responsibility and must cover the full
page of your answer script. However, for a clear and readable scan copy of the
answer script, students should use only one side of a page for answering the
questions.
vi) You must avoid plagiarism, maintain academic integrity, and ethics. You
are not allowed to take any help from another individual and if taken so can
result in stern disciplinary actions from the university authority.

Question 1. [Marks: 12]

a) What are the factors affecting voltage regulation? Let two systems have voltage regulation 0 [4]
and -1, respectively. Explain which one you would recommend.
b) A 1-kVA, 230/115-V, 60-Hz distribution transformer is tested with the following results: [8]
Open-circuit test Short-circuit test

IOC = 0.11 A VSC = 17.1 V, ISC = 8.7 A

POC = 3.9 W PSC = (38.1 + x) W

Where x=sum of last two digits of your student ID


(i) Construct the equivalent circuit for this transformer referred to low voltage side.
(ii) Calculate the voltage regulation at the rated conditions and 0.8 PF leading.
(iii) Calculate the efficiency at the rated conditions and 0.8 PF leading.

a) What is inrush current? Explain why transformers get heated during operation. Name few [4]
cooling methods.
b) A single-phase power system is shown in Fig. for Q. 2(b). The power source feeds a 100kVA, [8]
14/2.4 kV transformer through a feeder of impedance 10 + j150 Ω. The transformer’s
equivalent series impedance referred to its low-voltage side is 0.12 + j0.5 Ω. The load on the
transformer is 90 kW at 0.8 pf lagging and (2300 + x) V. Where x=sum of last two digits of
your student ID.
(i) Calculate the voltage at the power source of the system.
(ii) Calculate the voltage regulation of the transformer.
(iii) How efficient is the overall power system?

a) Why is a single-phase induction motor not self-starting? In what ways a single-phase induction [4]
motor can be made self-starting.
b) Differentiate between the operations of a synchronous motor and an induction motor with [4]
diagrams.
c) A (50 + x) hp, (400 + x) V, 50 Hz, 6 pole induction motor has a full-load slip of 5%. Where [4]
x=sum of last two digits of your student ID. The friction and windage losses are 400 W and
the stator copper and iron losses are 800 W.
(i) Calculate the shaft speed.
(ii) Calculate the motor output power.
(iii) Calculate the induced torque.
(iv) Calculate the load torque.

Question 4. [Marks: 12]


a) What do you mean by ‘static’, ‘alternating’, and ‘rotating’ magnetic field? Explain the [4]
significances of the rotating magnetic field in rotary machines.
b) What are the purposes of using starter in a three-phase induction motor? With neat diagrams, [4]
explain the operation of a Wye-Delta starter for a three phase induction motor.
c) A 460-V, 25-hp, 50-Hz, 4-pole, Y-connected wound-rotor induction motor has the following [4]
impedances in ohms per phase referred to the stator circuit:
R1 = 0.641 Ω, R 2 = 0.332 Ω , X1 = 1.106 Ω, X2 = 0.464 Ω , XM = 26.3 Ω
(i) Calculate the maximum torque of this motor. At what speed and slip does it occur?
(ii) Calculate the starting torque of this motor.
(iii) When rotor resistance is doubled, what is the speed at which the maximum torque now
occurs? Calculate the new maximum torque of the motor.

Question 5. [Marks: 12]


a) Explain with proper diagrams, how does the increase of field resistance for speed control in a [4]
small shunt dc motor affect its operation?
b) Explain the following characteristics of a separately excited dc generator with proper [4]
diagrams: (i) open-circuit characteristics, and (ii) internal and external characteristics.
c) A (100 + x) kW, (230 + x) V shunt generator has an armature resistance of 0.05 Ω and field [4]
resistance of 57.5 Ω. The generator has a total mechanical and core loss of (1700 + x) W.
Where x=sum of last two digits of your student ID. Neglect the brush drop. If the generator
operates at rated voltage,
(i) sketch the electrical equivalent circuit with all the given value
(ii) calculate the induced voltage at half full-load
(iii) calculate the generator efficiency at full-load
(iv) calculate the horsepower output from the prime mover to the generator

a) What is V-curve and inverted V-curve of a synchronous motor? Explain how does field [4]
excitation of a synchronous motor control the reactive power supplied to or consumed by the
power system?
b) What are the conditions for paralleling alternators with infinite bus? With phasor diagrams, [4]
explain the effect of change in excitation on an alternator connected to infinite busbars.
c) A short-shunt dc compound generator supplies 200 A at (100 + x) volts. The resistances of [4]
armature and shunt field windings are 0.04 Ω and (80 + x) Ω respectively. Where x=sum of
last two digits of your student ID. If current flowing through the shunt field is 1.6 A,
(i) sketch the electrical equivalent circuit with all the given value
(ii) calculate the resistance of series field winding
(iii) calculate the emf generated

a) With neat diagrams, explain the development and effects of armature reaction in an alternator. [4]
b) Briefly explain the open-circuit characteristics and short-circuit characteristics of an alternator [4]
to determine voltage regulation.
c) What is regenerative braking and how does it work in electric or hybrid cars? [4]
