 Best Practice: The purpose of this lesson is a form of best practice to help group

being.

themselves and share something interesting
 Complete informed consent and pre-test

Communicate Counselor will explain that focus of first session is to become more
Lesson Objective: comfortable with self-disclosure to other members of the group.
Teach Content: M&M Activity: Each participant is given an equal amount of M&M’s. For
each M&M, they will share something with the group based off of the
color as follows:

Red: Something that makes them angry

Green: Something that makes them excited
Brown: Something that makes them sad
Yellow: Something that makes them happy
Blue: Something they did right/well in the last week
Orange: Something they did wrong/poorly in the last week and
something they could have done instead

After participants share about all M&M’s, ask the following discussion
questions:

 How did this activity make you feel?

 How might this activity be helpful to us as we move forward with
this group?
 What was the scariest part about this activity?
 What was the most interesting thing you learned about a
groupmate from this activity?

Practice Content: Iceberg Activity: Each participant will be given an iceberg worksheet and
instructed to complete it. They will be instructed to include 7 items that
people would know about them from a surface level (tip of the iceberg)
and 10 items that people would know only if they knew them well (90%
below water). After being given some time to fill it out, group members
will pair up and share 3 items from each category with their partner.

They will then come together as a group and each share 1 item (not
previously shared) from beneath the tip of the iceberg with the whole
group.

After sharing, the counselor will ask the following discussion questions:

 How did this activity make you feel?

 Was it scary or easy to share the items you shared with your
partner and the group? What made it easy or scary for you?
 How comfortable do you feel with sharing things about yourself
from beneath the surface with the other members of this group?
What might make that challenging?

Summarize: Counselor will have each participant answer the questions:

 What was one interesting point from the session today? What
made you choose that part of the session?
 What is one thing you learned today that you can apply this
week?

Close: Remind participants of confidentiality, next week we will begin talking

about personal growth from a physical standpoint.
