INTERVIEW REPORT
Nature of Report

In order to gain an insight into the role and implications of socio-cultural diversity in the
education system in Malaysia from the perspective of students, teachers, schools, and
education curriculum, TESL students were assigned a task to conduct an interview with the
schools’ teachers during our third cycle of School-Based Experience. The questions that
needed to be asked were already prepared by the students beforehand to ensure that none
won’t be unrelated to the context.

Respondent’s Background

The respondent I conducted an interview with an English subject teacher named Puan
Rozita. Puan Rozita has served for 12 years as a teacher and has now been teaching at
SKIPGKDRI. She holds a few classes at the school and all of them are in upper grades.
Puan Rozita was one of the teachers that have achieved a lot for the school especially when
it comes to English subject matter.

The Reason for the Choice of Respondent

My friend and I found out from other teachers that Puan Rozita is a cheerful person inside
and out as a teacher and also a workmate. She contributes a lot to many events and kept on
being appointed as someone that is suitable enough to be interviewed regarding the topic. I
think it would be interesting to interview her as she knows most of the backstory of the
school than others.

The Responses to the Questions Asked

We have asked several important questions regarding the task given. The first one was her
opinion on the importance of raising cultural awareness among teachers and students. She
simply confessed that when it comes to being a teacher, pupils should be put at the top. For
them to adapt to an environment where they feel safe and comfortable, raising cultural
awareness is one of the skills that create an atmosphere of inclusivity. When pupils finally
get involved with one another, they get the spark of joy to work together. This proved that to
have these kids get along with each other, you must first raise cultural awareness among
them as a teacher.
The second question was how much has the school instilled cultural awareness among their
pupils. Puan Rozita answered that they constantly hold a lot of events related to these
different cultures; particularly celebrations. They enjoyed carrying out events that could unite
everyone into one theme without having to look at each other differently. Recently, they had
their last event in the school and there were pupils who participate in performing dances and
music from different cultures.

The third question was if these pupils still bring up the insensitive issue when they are not
surrounded by those of different races. She reckoned that these pupils are nowhere near
their mature phase. Some would find that it can be topic to joke around with others and they
still would not know the wrongs in that. Children nowadays are very much influenced by
outsiders; that is the reason why teachers should not often associate their learning with what
is shown in the media.

The last one was a personal question of whether there are any work colleagues that try to
learn each other’s cultures just so they can understand better. Puan Rozita claimed that one
friend of hers, Teacher Lin, shows so much interest to learn whatever practices she has and
respects her for that. She would always share a lot of stories at home just so they could see
the uniqueness of different cultures’ ethics.

Conclusion

Overall, I think the interview was very successful. I learned more about cultural diversity in
school with the help of an expert. I was able to explore broader answers when it comes from
the experienced one.
