Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 romantic novel of manners written by Jane Austen.
The main characters are the Bennet family, but mostly Elizabeth Bennet, Mr Darcy, Mr
Charles Bingley and Mr George Wickham. It has 480 pages and 99,760 words.
The book was nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s ,,The Great
American Read”

The story takes place in England in the early 1800s.The protagonist, Elizabeth Bennett, is
clever and questioning, but this doesn’t prevent her from hastily forming her own negative
opinions when she meets Mr Darcy, who is not as effusive and charming as his
companions. The story revolves around the development of her relationship with Mr Darcy,
and the unravelling of all of her misconceptions about him, and the evolution of Mr Darcy’s
own behaviour.Other storylines include the eldest sister, Jane’s relationship with the
charming Mr Bingley, and the seemingly disastrous pairing of younger sister, Lydia, with
the badly-behaved Mr Wickham.
The main conflict was caused by Elizabeth, who wanted to get married to someone who
she actually loves and not just because of their money. Because it took place in the 1800s,
where women had no rights and their only ,,job” was to get married to a wealthy man,
Elizabeth’s character was a big change for society, she was like a hero for women of her
age. But the conflict was solved when she and Mr Darcy fell in love with each other and
they got married.

The fact that Elizabeth stood up for herself and for her rights is really important, and after
all she got married to a rich man, who she loved. The title was formed by Elizabeth’s and
Mr Darcy’s negative feature, pride as Mr Darcy’s because when they first met he acted like
he was better than everyone else, and prejudice as Elizbeth’s, because she formed her
opinion of Mr Darcy of her first impression, when he actually was a good person.

My favourite scene was when after Mr Darcy confirmed his feelings for Elizabeth, they met
at Mr Darcy’s home and they both acted differently, they got over their pride and prejudice.

I liked this book because I think the 1800s were beautiful, how they dressed, the balls.
This is the only romantic book or movie which I actually love, any other romantic book or
movie is almost the same, but it has something special in it.
I would recommend this book to everyone who wants to read something romantic with a
twist.

Some quotes:
“Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance. If the dispositions of the parties are
ever so well known to each other, or ever so similar beforehand, it does not advance their
felicity in the least. They always continue to grow sufficiently unlike afterwards to have their
share of vexation, and it is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the person
with whom you are to pass your life.”

“For what do we live, but to make sport of our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn?”
