1 General information SPMT’s

A SPMT (Self Propelled Modular Transporter) is a multi-axle transport vehicle with hydrostatic drive system,
electronic/hydraulic multidirectional steering and a hydraulic elevating loading platform.

Because the trailers are modular, they can be mounted to each other in both longitudinal direction and side
by side. Therefore it is possible to make any configuration necessary for transporting a load of any size and
weight.
SPMT’s come in modules of 4 or 6 axle lines. Each axle line has 2 bogies and each bogie has 2 tires.
SPMT’s are not pulled by a truck or tractor like conventional trailers, but are equipped with PPU’s (Power
Pack Units) which provide the propulsion. Mammoet has multiple types of PPU’s. In the table below, the
specifications of the most used type are shown.

Mammoet has a large fleet of SPMT’s consisting of 3000+ axle lines.

A SPMT configuration is controlled by one single operator. Therefore the operator has the availability over a
portable remote control with clear instrumentation. The steering is done by programmable electronically
controlled multidirectional steering. Complete structures can be positioned to the millimetre.

SPMT’s are equipped with a hydraulic jack suspension system which helps to spread the loads evenly to
the ground. This system can also keep the trailer deck horizontal while driving on slopes and unevenness’s
in the road.
1.1.1 Steering capabilities
Because the axles of a SPMT can steer independent, the manoeuvrability of SPMT’s is great. The trailer
combination can drive forwards, backwards, sideways, diagonal and can even rotate on the spot
(carrousel).

1.1.2 Combinations
A major advantage is the modular construction capability of the SPMT. Each module can be connected to
another module to build a unique driving platform. They can be connected side by side by means of a
coupling block and they can be connected in a longitudinal way to make the platform longer. Also if the
modules are placed underneath a load while physically unconnected to each other, the whole arrangement
is still able to be controlled as one.

1.1.3 Mobilization
Prior to the operations, SPMT’s are mobilized to site mostly by truck. SPMT’s are designed to fit on
flatracks, which makes transportation by containership very easy. For the unloading and the assembly of
SPMT’s only a 70 tons hydraulic crane is necessary. The modules will be unloaded and assembled
together in the right configuration.

1.1.4 Loading
A load can be placed on a SPMT in two ways:
- The load is placed on the SPMT’s using a crane, jacks or another external system.
- The SPMT loads itself using its own hydraulic system.

During driving the deckheight of the SPMT’s

normally is 1500mm above ground. This deck can
be lowered and lifted 300mm. To load an item on
top of the trailer deck by means of the hydraulic
suspensions system, the following procedure is
followed.

1. The trailerdeck of the SPMT is lowered.

2. The SPMT’s are driven underneath the item.
3. The item is loaded by raising the trailerdeck.
4. The item is lifted from its support by raising
the trailerdeck more.
5. The SPMT’s drive out, loaded with the item

The unloading of the item can be done in the

opposite way.
