[1] A 250 mm x 500 mm prestressed beam has a simple span of 6 m.

The
beam uses stress relieved with specified tensile strength fpu = 1, 325 MPa,
fc’ = 35 MPa. The area of prestressed reinforcement in tension zone Aps =
1,200 mm2, the specified yield strength of pressing tendons , fpy = 1,150
MPa.

1. Determine the value of the stress in prestressed reinforcement at

nominal strength (fps).
2. Determine the value of the depth of the compression block.
3. Determine the ultimate moment capacity of the prestressed beam
4. Determine the safe live load that the prestressed beam could carry if
wc = 23.54 kN/m3

SOLUTION:

1. Prestessed reinforcement

Check = = 0.867

Use: , = ( )

Bonded Tendons:

= { ( ( ))

= 0.85 - ( fc’ – 28 ) < 0.65 , = 0.85 - ( 35 – 28 ) = 0.80

( )( )
= { ( ) = 1,325 { 1 - }
( )

, Ans.
2. Depth of compression block , a

( ( )
. = = 0.334

Check : = 0.36(0.80) = 0.288 , use = 0.288

a = 0.423 d = 0.423(0.80)(430)

a = 145.51 mm, depth of compression block, Ans.

3. Ultimate Moment

Mu = ( )( ) = (0.90(0.85)(35)(145.51)(250)( 430 – 145.51/2))

Mu = 347.96 kN- m , Ans.

4. Live Load

Mu = , maximum moment at the midspan

( )
wu = = = 77.32 kN/m

wu = 1.2DL + 1,6LL

wu = 1.2(23.54 kN/m3)(0.250m(.500m) + 1.6LL = 77.32

LL = 46.12 kN/m , Ans.
