Seminar on Being a Global Doctor
On 15th December 2022, the Class 12 Science Stream students of both Timpany School and Timpany Senior Secondary
School joined the seminar on “How to become a GLOBAL DOCTOR”. This was conducted by Manipal's American
Institute of Antigua. The seminar started with the introduction of Mr V R Murali Krishna, Associate Director of
Admissions India and the Middle East. Later, there was a questionnaire round, where the students were asked
questions regarding NEET.
Mr.Krishna explained the statistics of students attempting NEET every year. Over 18 lakh students attempt NEET every
year and only 98,000 students get the chance of graduating in medical sciences. In India, a medical student has to
pursue 15 years of education to become a successful doctor, whereas the students who pursued their course in
Manipal education & Medical group take about 12 years. The seminar concluded with a program structure on how to
get into the Manipal group of Institutions.
The program to study medicine in the U.S. takes about 6 years. The first 2 yrs are called the pre-med program for the
development of critical thinking skills. The preclinical sciences are about 2.5 years where the students learn about
actual sciences followed by 13 weeks of USMLE 1 training. Later the students move to the U.S. to pursue clinical
sciences where the students observe and work closely with the residents and physicians along with the training for
USMLE 2. To get a P.G. seat in the U.S.A one has to go through the ‘MATCH’ Residency process, if selected the students
get to study P.G. for 3-5 years depending upon their specialisation. The respective students will then appear for
USMLE 3. Thus, the students become Global Doctors.
