CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

Sleep is very essential in our lives; it allow us to regain more energy and process our

minds better. Sleeping, like eating, drinking, and breathing, is a basic human need. Sleeping,

like these other needs, is essential for good health and well-being throughout your life (U.S

Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.). According to (Gulia & Kumar, 2020)

getting good sleep is essential for the health and well-being of people of all ages; however,

given our current predicament, sleep, which accounts for nearly one-third of our lives, should

be prioritized in order to improve a community.

Sleep has numerous health benefits for our bodies. Not only does it improve our

mood, but it also helps us remember because the brain circuits involved in learning are

reactivated while we sleep (Lange, A. C., et. al, 2019). Studies show getting quality sleep on a

regular basis can help improve all sorts of issues, from your blood sugar to your workouts. It can

sharpen our brains, boosts our mood and steadied our blood sugar. Having enough sleep can also

make the person more energetic, increase immune system and control the weight (WebMd, n.d.).

Teens 13 to 18 years old needs at least 8 hours of sleep per day and adults 20 years

old and above needs to sleep between 7 to 9 hours a night. But unfortunately, most of them

seem to have a hard time in doing it. As it turns out, they are suffering from it as a result of

their sleepless nights spent completing their schoolwork and paper works from their jobs. It

also says that social pressure interferes with their sleep. According to U.S Department of
Health and Human Services (n.d.), sleep deprivation can impair work, school, driving, and

social functioning. You may have difficulty learning, focusing, and reacting. You may also

find it difficult to judge other people's emotions and reactions. Sleep deprivation can also

make you feel frustrated, cranky, or anxious in social situations. It has also been linked to an

increased risk of injury in adults, adolescents, and children. For example, sleepiness while

driving (unrelated to alcohol) is to blame for serious car accidents and deaths. Sleep

deprivation may be associated with an increased risk of falls and broken bones in older

adults.

Sleep deprivation has also been connected to human errors that have resulted in tragic

accidents such as nuclear reactor meltdowns, large ship groundings, and plane crashes. A

common misconception is that people can learn to function on little sleep with no negative

consequences. According to research, getting enough quality sleep at the right times is critical

for mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety (U.S Department of Health and

Human Services, n.d.).

Background of the Study

Sleeping plays a big part in every students life. It helps them recuperate from all the

stress they experience. Not only that it gives positive emotions but also it helps them to be

energize and have enough strength to continue the day. One study shows that lack of sleep

contribute greatly to the performance of the student in his school and it also affects the

nervous system resulting in poor brain function. Without sleep, many students from different

places would be stressed and the outcome could be unimaginable. The key to a thriving

student is to have enough sleep and regain his strength so that he can answer his school works

and regain his strength to resume the day.

In terms of sleep deprivation, high school is the real danger zone,' says William

Dement, founder of the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic. Teens are under intense pressure to

perform, and they must begin competing with an increasing number of peers for college spots

that have largely remained consistent (Ritcher 2015). Because reality is difficult to deal with,

students must work hard to achieve their goals. According to Center for Disease Control and

Prevention (2019) young adults should have at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep and 7 out of 10 of

the high school students don’t get enough sleep.

And so, the researcher's goal in conducting this study is to learn how many students
are sleep-deprived by discovering the perspectives and experiences of the selected
students. Furthermore, to promote a balanced lifestyle in which students can improve their
academic performance without being sleep deprived. Finally, the researcher will offer
solutions and recommendations to help students avoid sleep deprivation.
Research Questions:

1. ) What are the demographic profile of the students?

2. ) How many hours do student usually sleep?

3. ) What is the academic performance of student in school?

Significance of the Study

This study will provide students and teachers with enough information to understand

the importance of getting enough sleep, as well as why we need it and why we need to learn

it. On our days off, we relax by sleeping and recovering from the social stress and pressure

that we are subjected to. The significance of this study will assist students in getting adequate

sleep and time management in order to function properly.

The intended audience are;

Students, because as researchers, we want to know how many 12th grade students

suffer from sleep deprivation and whether their habits are one of the factors.

Teachers, are responsible for the academic performance of their students. This study

is also conducted to provide educators with an overview of the impact of the schoolwork they

complete.

Parents, they are the ones who lived with the student, so they must know that the

student’s habit are causing them sleep problems.

Future Researchers, The primary goal of the future researcher is to conduct research

that will benefit the community, and using this research means that they are needed. This may

not only be beneficial to them, but it may also serve as a wake-up call that even minor factors

can provide us with positive or negative feedback.

Definition of Terms
The following terms are defined according to the context in which they will be used in

the study for clearer understanding of what they mean;

GWA. It is the average of grades in all subjects taken, whether passed or failed and

serves as an indicator of students' academic achievement in a given school year.
