I. Introduction

School years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 are a turning point in the educational system

of the Philippines. This is because of the addition of the 2-year senior-high school level

which comprises grades 11 and 12 to fully implement the final phase of DepEd’s K-12

program, also known as RA 10533 or the Basic Education Act all throughout the

country. According to SAMEO INNOTECH (2012), the learning goal in the new “K to 12”

curriculum is the acquisition of the following 21sth century skills; 1) learning and

innovation skills, 2) IT and media skills, 3) effective communication skills, and 4) life and

career skills. The “K to 12” Program aimed at promoting holistic skill development

leading to employment and higher education. Graduating students from secondary

schools may not have solid decision on where to go in college and what degree

program they may possibly take. They are planning to enter college without clear idea of

what career to pursue for their future (Ramirez & Dizon, 2014). Hirschi and Läge (2007)

noted that the educational career starts officially in Grade 8 among students in

Switzerland and it seems to assume that they enter this process with the same

conditions and mostly unaware of existing choices. This time, they will be orienting

junior high school students to enter in the senior high school with properly selected

academic track: Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) Strand;

Humanities and Social Sciences Strand (HUMSS); Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Strand while other colleges and universities

will be offering other tracks based on the approval of the Department of Education.

The choice of career of the students is being influenced by some factors from the social

environment, mainly the parents as immediate family who plays an active role in

choosing the right education for their children (Pafili & Mylonakis, 2011). As a sign of
respect for the parents and culture of the Filipinos, parents or the elderly are being

consulted first by their children because primarily they will be the one to provide the

financial support to enter in college (Laguador, 2013).

A. Background of the study

STEM or as we all know as Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. Some students

may like this strand because of their interests, and even though STEM is very complex it may still

make students to choose this strand. Many students want to choose STEM as their strand, but

before that, what is STEM? STEM is a very complex strand or as we all know “Science

Technology Engineering and Mathematics”. STEM is a potentially new educational powerhouse,

and when applied properly, this curriculum integrating process can make a big difference in how

our future leaders see the world, and solve problems. This strand is perfect for those students who

are willing to pursue college in the future. There are specific types of courses that you can take

when you took STEM as your strand in senior high school, one of those courses are Engineering,

Medicine, and Aeronautics’. They’re a lot of reason why grade 11 students may have chosen stem

as their strand.

B. Research Questions

1. Why do most grade 11 students often choose STEM as their strand?

2. What are the factors that affect the decision of grade 11 students of choosing their strands?

C. Significance of Study

At present, in our country, are already in k-12 program which means our Department of

Education added two more years in high school, to make the students more accessible in college

or in the jobs. Students will have additional learning especially in improving their skills in math

basically because they are in STEM strand.

In addition, the major goal of this study is to know the factors and influences that made the Grade

11 students choose STEM as their strand. This study helps the government to inform the citizens

that we need professionals, and that is STEM students.

D. Scope and limitation

The study will focus only on Grade 11 students who choose STEM as their strand, as stated above in the

introduction part of the research paper. The researchers formulated the scope and limitations of this

project to identify the boundaries of this study.

Methodology

A. Research Design

We are tasked to use Quantitative research as it is systematic empirical investigation of observable

phenomena via statistical, mathematical or computational techniques. Through this type of research, it

will be more convenient to the researchers to recognize the factors and influences that made the Grade 11

students choose stem as their strand.

B. Setting

The study will be conducted in University of Perpetual Help-Molino Campus. This campus is

located in Bacoor Cavite and just one of the schools who have a pioneer batch of Senior High

School Students. Since this University has new curriculum it is very interesting to study why and

how students made a decision to have their own strand.

C. Participants

With the study to be conducted on University of Perpetual Help-Molino Campus, Compromised

of 35-50 Grade 11 students who are belong to STEM strand.

D. Data Collection

We designed this study as a quantitative research it is well-suited to base our data on a statistical

and numerical representation. The researchers will conduct an experiment to distinguish the

factors and influences that made the Grade 11 students choose the STEM as their strand, the

researchers will use survey with close ended questions to identify their answers.

E. Data Analysis

The thoughts and information that will be found from the answers of the respondents based on

the questionnaire given. Soon after, the answers from the respondents will be evaluated and

interpreted into a statistical/mathematical data. With this, it will provide a strong understanding

of what factors and influences to the Grade 11 students that made their selves belong to STEM

as their strand.
