Re: Design of Raft Foundation for Zakho Museum

According to the plans and structural design details sent by engineer (Ismail
Aziz Ali), and as per his kind request, it was required to check the raft
foundation design for Zakho museum.

Loads considered:
1. Dead loads:
• Self-weight of the structural members.
• Slab service loads (finishing and partitions) = 4kN/m2
• Exterior Beams loads (Wall Load + cladding with Marble) = 20kN/m.
2. Live Loads: 4 kN/m2 for basement and Ground floor, and 1 kN/m2 for
Roof.
3. Seismic Loads: UBC97
• Seismic Zone Factor Z=0.3.,
• Soil profile Type (SD)

Materials Properties.
• Concrete Strength Fcu=37 MPa, (f’c=29.6 MPa).
• Steel Grade 60, fy= 420 MPa.

Foundation
• Raft thickness= 400mm., Clear cover = 50mm.
• Main Reinforcement (Asprov) Bottom= ∅16@20𝑐𝑚 + 𝑎𝑑𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 ∅16@20𝑐𝑚:
As total = 2010 mm2/m.
• Main Reinforcement (AsProv.) Top: = ∅12@20𝑐𝑚 + 𝑎𝑑𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 ∅12@20𝑐𝑚
As total = 1130 mm2/m.

Design Check:
The building was modeled with CSI ETABS V.20 software and then the loads
were exported to CSI SAFE software to design the Raft.
The summary points of the design are shown below:

Case-1 Raft Thickness = 40cm. B.C of soil qall.= 8 t./m2

K = 40xFSxqall. = 40x30*80= 9,600 kN/m2/m
Footing thickness is controlled either by: (larger one controls)
1. Columns Anchor Embedment (Development Length) in footing (𝑙𝑑 ):

1
100 𝑑𝑏
𝑙𝑑 = , 𝑑𝑏 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑛𝑠 = 20𝑚𝑚, 𝑙𝑑 = 367.6𝑚𝑚
√𝑓𝑐′

Total thick of raft = 𝑙𝑑 + 2 𝑑𝑏 +cover = 367.6+16x2+50 = 450mm.

2. Punching check: figure below the punching shear under all columns.

Comments from checker:

The thickness used 40cm is not satisfactory for punching check, that is why the
designer has used reinforcement cages to increase the shear resistance of
concrete. Also, the minimum thickness of footing is not controlled by punching,
the development length is dictating the footing thickness, i.e 450mm.
In addition, the designer has used a footing with no extension around the
building, in this case, punching stresses under exterior column is not satisfied.

Recommendations from the Checker:

1. Increase the thickness from 40cm to 50cm.
2. Provide extension of raft of 60cm all around the building.

2
Case-2 Design summary (Raft Thickness=50cm) (B.C =8 t/m2)
B.C of soil qall.= 8 t./m2
K = 40xFSxqall. = 40x30*80= 9,600 kN/m2/m
1. Punching shear check:
After modifying the design throughout increasing the thickness (50cm) and
60cm extension all around the building. The final results are shown in the
following figures:

The punching shear ratio under all columns < 1.0 which indicate that an
increase in thickness will satisfy the punching reinforcement and no
reinforcement cages are required.

2. Design moments and Reinforcement:
Figure below shows the maximum design moments for the raft with
thickness T=50cm.

• Bottom Design Moment:

o Max. Bottom Moment: M+ve= 399.8 kN.m/m in both direction
𝐴𝑠𝑅𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = 2520 𝑚𝑚2/𝑚
✓ 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝑩𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒎 𝑹𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒄𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 ∶
✓ ∅𝟏𝟔@𝟐𝟎𝒄𝒎 + 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 ∅𝟐𝟎@𝟐𝟎𝒄𝒎, 𝑳 = 𝟑𝒎, 𝑨𝒔𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒅 = 𝟐𝟓𝟕𝟓 𝒎𝒎𝟐/𝒎
Hence, 𝐴𝑠𝑅𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 < 𝐴𝑠𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 … . . 𝑂. 𝐾

4
• Top Design Moment:
o Max. Top Moment: M-ve= 140 kN.m/m in both direction
𝐴𝑠𝑅𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = 855 𝑚𝑚2/𝑚

Check Asmin. (the Smaller Controls)

1.4 1.4
Asmin= 𝑓 𝑏𝑑 = 420 × 1000 × 440 = 1466 𝑚𝑚2/𝑚
𝑦

Or
1√𝑓𝑐′
Asmin= 𝑏𝑑 = 0.00325 × 1000 × 440 = 1425 𝑚𝑚2/𝑚
4𝑓𝑦
Or

As for Temp and Shrinkage = 0.18%bh =.0018x1000x500 = 900 𝑚𝑚2/𝑚

Use As min. 900 𝑚𝑚2/𝑚 > 𝐴𝑠𝑅𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = 855 𝑚𝑚2/𝑚

✓ Provide Top Reinforcement ∅𝟏𝟔@𝟐𝟎𝒄𝒎, As = 1005mm2
