1.2 Hazards of the Marking System

1.2.1 Radiation Exposure Hazards

Eye Exposure
EV4GDS: When the eye is exposed to Nd:YVO4 laser radiation or the pumping radiations, retinal damage,
corneal damage, and/or blindness may result. To avoid eye exposure to the Nd:YVO4 laser or the pumping
radiation it is mandatory that laser safety glasses or goggles attenuated for the Nd:YVO4 laser wavelength
(532nm) and the pumping radiation wavelengths (808nm and 1064nm), are worn any time exposure to
the laser is possible.

All Other E-series Lasers: When the eye is exposed to Nd:YVO4 laser radiation or the pumping
radiation, retinal damage, corneal damage, and/or blindness may result. To avoid eye exposure to the
Nd:YVO4 laser or the pumping radiation it is mandatory that laser safety glasses or goggles attenuated for
the Nd:YVO4 laser wavelength (1064 nm) and the pumping radiation wavelength (808 nm), are worn any
time exposure to the laser is possible.

Skin Exposure
Skin exposure to the Nd:YVO4 laser, the YAG laser, and the EV4GDS green laser, can result in thermal
burning of the skin, much like sunburn or a burn from an oven. To avoid this kind of hazard, it is very
important to know the laser beam path, enclose it when possible and avoid contact with the beam or
hazardous laser radiation.

Source of Ignition
EV4GDS: The Nd:YVO4 laser radiation and its harmonic wavelengths are sources of ignition and are
therefore unsuitable for use in a potentially explosive environment.

All Other E-series Lasers: The Nd:YVO4 laser radiation is a source of ignition and is therefore unsuitable
for use in a potentially explosive environment.

1.2.2 Process By-Products

Chemical Hazards
Harmful particulate and vapor matter can be released as a result of any thermal process, including laser
processing. Certain metals and plastics release extremely toxic fumes, which must be properly ducted and
disposed of during processing. A fume extraction system should be considered when such materials are to
be processed.

1-2 82024D
E-series/E15 Installation & Maintenance

1.2.3 Electrical Hazards

Power Supplies
Laser power supplies contain very high voltages and can easily be a shock hazard. To date, all known
laser-related deaths in the United States have been electrocutions. Extreme caution should be used when
working with laser power supplies and all general electrical safety practices should be adhered to.

1.2.4 Secondary Hazards

Faulty Equipment
Many hazards may present themselves due to faulty equipment, such as X-radiation from a faulty power
supply (normally found in very high power lasers); electromagnetic emissions and RF emissions from Q-
switch drivers, etc. To avoid such hazards, it is imperative to perform maintenance procedures as
prescribed.

1.3 Definitions of System Functions

1.3.1 Operation
Operation is defined as the "performance of the laser or laser system over the full range of its intended
functions (normal operation). It does not include maintenance or service as defined in this section." (ANSI
Z136.1-2014 p. 13)

1.3.2 Maintenance
Maintenance is defined as "performance of those adjustments or procedures (specified in user information
provided by the manufacturer with the laser or laser system), which are to be performed by the user to ensure
the intended performance of the product. It does not include operation or service as described in this section."
(ANSI Z136.1-2014 p. 12)

1.3.3 Service
Service is defined as "the performance of those procedures or adjustments described in the manufacturer’s
service instructions which may affect any aspect of the performance of the laser or laser system. It does not
include maintenance or operation as defined in this section." (ANSI Z136.1-2014 p. 15)

1.4 Classification of Laser Systems

The National Center for Devices and Radiological Health (NCDRH) in the United States, the International
Electrotechnical Commission, and CENECEC in Europe have classified laser products by the level of hazard
that the product presents during normal operation of the system. See Laser Safety, Operation. There are four
main levels of hazard classification, with Class 1 presenting the least hazard and Class 4 presenting the
greatest hazard. The following information is extracted from ANSI Z136.1-2014.

Class 1 Laser Product

1) A Class 1 system is considered to be incapable of producing damaging radiation levels during
operation, and is exempt from any control measures. A common example of a class 1 laser is one that
includes an embedded higher class laser, but during normal operation presents no laser radiation
hazard to the user.
2) A Class 1M laser system is considered to be incapable of producing hazardous exposure conditions
during normal operation unless the beam is viewed with collecting optics ( e.g., telescope) and is
exempt from any control measures, other than prevention of hazardous optically aided viewing.

Class 2 Laser Product

1) A Class 2 Laser system emits in the visible portion of the spectrum (400nm-700nm) and eye
protection is normally afforded by the aversion response,
2) A Class 2M laser system emits in the visible portion of the spectrum (400nm-700nm) and eye
protection is normally afforded by the aversion response for unaided viewing. Class 2M is potentially
hazardous if viewed with collecting optics. (e.g., telescope).

Class 3 Laser Product

1) Class 3R lasers have reduced control requirements and potentially are hazardous under some direct
and specular reflection viewing conditions if the eye is appropriately focused and stable, but the
probability of actual injury is small. This laser will not pose either a fire hazard or diffuse reflection
hazard.
2) Class3B lasers may be hazardous under direct and specular reflection viewing conditions, but are
normally not a fire hazard, diffuse reflection hazard, nor a laser generated air contaminant (LGAC)
production hazard.

Class 4 Laser Product

Class 4 lasers are a hazard to the eye or skin from the direct beam, may pose a fire hazard or diffuse
reflection hazard, and may produce LGAC and hazardous plasma radiation.

1.5 General Protection

Follow the recommendations of the Laser Safety Standard applicable in your country.

1.5.1 Eye Protection

Please refer to ANSI Z136.1-2014 to determine the appropriate level of optical density to meet the
requirements. When evaluating safety goggles, consider the potential optical hazards in your operational
environment. Laser goggles are available through Telesis Customer Support.

EV4GDS: Ensure that laser safety goggles attenuated for the Nd:YVO4 laser wavelength (532nm) and the
pumping radiation wavelengths (808nm and 1064nm) are available for all personnel present. Laser goggles
with an optical density greater than 6 at 532nm, 808nm*, and 1064nm are necessary for protection from
specular reflections.

* The 808nm laser light is not present under normal operation and maintenance procedures. Eye
protection for 808nm light must be worn whenever the fiber from the laser controller is not attached
to the EV resonator and there is a possibility the controller can be powered on. Under normal
operation and maintenance procedures, eyewear must be selected to provide adequate protection
from 532nm and 1064nm laser radiation.

All Other E-series Lasers: Ensure that laser safety goggles attenuated for the Nd:YVO4 laser wavelength
(1064 nm) and the pumping radiation wavelength (808 nm) are available for all personnel present. Laser
goggles with an optical density greater than 6 at 1064 nm and 808 nm are necessary for protection from
specular reflections.

1.5.2 Protective Clothing

Suitable clothing to protect exposed areas of the skin must be provided where exposure to Class 4 Nd:YVO4 or
Class 4 YAG laser radiation is possible.

1.5.3 Training
Ensure that all personnel operating the system have the proper training in laser safety and in operating the
laser. Appropriate training courses are available through the Telesis Customer Service Department.

82024D 1-5
E-series/E15 Installation & Maintenance

1.6 Engineering Controls of Laser Hazards

There are many safety features incorporated into the E-series/E15 system design to fulfill CDRH obligations
and to ensure consumer safety. Each of these is addressed below.

1.6.1 Protective Housing

The laser resonator is enclosed within a protective housing which physically prevents access to laser radiation
at any point along the beam path except where it exits the output optics at the work-piece. The internal cover
provides access to the housing. This prevents access to laser radiation that may be present within the
housing. The E-series/E15 system should never be operated with the housing cover off except by a qualified
factory technician during a required service function.

1.6.2 Safety Interlocks

The laser interlock circuit will open when the fiber optic cable is disconnected from the laser marking head. The
interlock circuit cannot be closed until the fiber optic cable is properly connected to the laser marking head.

Remote access to safety interlocks is provided on the rear panel of the laser controller. Provisions for remote
control of the laser interlock and for shutter control are provided via a M12 and DB9 connector. An optional
work enclosure may be fitted with interlocks designed to stop lasing action when the interlock is activated
during operation or maintenance of the system.

1.6.3 Location of Controls

Controls for the laser system are located on the front panel of the laser controller enclosure. Additional
controls may be present if the laser system includes a Class 1 enclosure or workstation.

1.6.4 Warning Labels

Certification and warning labels are affixed to the laser system to assure the user that the system complies with
21 CFR 1040 and to warn the user against accidental exposure to laser radiation. Refer to the illustration at the
end of this section for labels and their locations on the system. If the end-user modifies the system such that its
classification could change, it is that person’s or entity’s responsibility to re-label and re-certify the system.

1.6.5 Operating Instructions

Instructions for operating the E-series/E15 system are provided in the E-series/E15 Operation Supplement
and in the Merlin II LS Operating Instructions. Installation, setup and maintenance information is provided in
this manual. Questions concerning the information contained herein should be directed to Telesis
Technologies, Inc.

1.6.6 Safety Shutter

A mechanical safety shutter is mounted within the laser marking head between the output coupler and the
galvanometer to interrupt lasing action when necessary. The shutter is enabled by a switch on the front panel
of the laser controller and/or by the interlock switches from an optional or customer-supplied laser workspace
enclosure.

1.6.7 Emission Indicators

A white "EMISSION" lamp, located on the laser controller front panel as well as on the laser marking head,
illuminates when the laser is on and emission of laser radiation can occur. The lamp illuminates prior to actual
emission to give nearby personnel time to avoid exposure to laser radiation and remains on as long as the
laser marking system is capable of emitting radiation.

1-6 82024D
E-series/E15 Installation & Maintenance

1.6.8 Key Control

The E15 laser controller has a master key actuated switch that will not allow the laser marking system to
operate if the key is removed. In addition, the key switch must be manually reset after a major fault (such as
a power failure) before the laser marking system can be restarted; this prevents the system from starting on
its own even if all controls are left in the ON position.

1.7 Administrative Controls

There are several things that a company using a laser system should do to ensure that the laser system is as
safe for employees as possible. These are not requirements although it is strongly suggested that the
following be implemented.

1.7.1 Laser Safety Officer

The position of Laser Safety Officer (LSO) should be established in any company which uses industrial lasers.
The LSO is responsible for establishing and controlling all laser safety procedures within the company,
ensuring that a laser safe environment is maintained and making any necessary contact with the
manufacturer and federal authorities regarding safety of laser products. This position is described in full in
both the ANSI Z-136.1-2014 publication and in the IEC 825:1984 (or latest version) publication.

1.7.2 ANSI Z-136.1-2014

The American National Standard Institute has issued a standard for the safe use of lasers, ANSI Z-136.1-2014.
This informative book is highly recommended for companies employing industrial lasers. The book may be
obtained by contacting the American National Standards Institute, Inc., 11 West 42nd Street, New York, NY
10036. Similar information is available in the User's Guide section of the IEC Publication 825:1984.

1.7.3 Standard Operating Procedures

The Laser Safety Officer (see Laser Safety, Laser Safety Officer) must approve written Standard Operating
Procedures (SOPs) to be maintained with the laser system for reference by the operator and maintenance or
service personnel. The SOPs may be in the form of the documentation provided with the system by the
manufacturer, but should remain with the system at all times.

1.7.4 Education and Training

All personnel responsible for operating, maintaining and/or servicing the laser system should be trained in the
proper procedures for the various system functions. Telesis can provide training in all areas of E-series/E15
system operation, maintenance and service, including laser safety. The user is responsible for ensuring that
personnel are properly trained.

1.7.5 Protective Equipment

For Class 4 systems or for any service-related procedures on all Telesis laser systems, protective equipment
must be provided. This may include eye protection (see Laser Safety, Class 4 Laser Product), temporary
barriers or screens, and fume exhaust systems for some processes. Telesis can provide or recommend many
protective items.

82024D 1-7
E-series/E15 Installation & Maintenance

1.8 Laser Safety Alerts

The safety of a laser system is determined mostly by the person using the system. Virtually all lasers can be
unsafe if misused or mishandled. Any modification of the E-series/E15 system, such as defeating or removing
interlocks or housings may void warranties and can change the classification of a Class 1 or Class 2 system to
a Class 4 system. Telesis Technologies, Inc. is not responsible for injuries resulting from modification of a
laser system by a customer. Failure to heed the safety precautions or to follow normal safety procedures may
result in personal injury or death.

Questions regarding laser safety should be referred to the Telesis Customer Service Department.

1.8.1 General Safety Alerts

The following terms and formats are used throughout this documentation to advise you of hazards associated
with the laser marking system.

Notification of hazards or unsafe practices that will result

in serious personal injury or death.

Notification of hazards or unsafe practices that could

1.8.2 Specific Safety Alerts

DO NOT POWER OR OPERATE THE LASER MARKING SYSTEM

WITH THE FIBER OPTIC CABLE DISCONNECTED.
Never power system or operate the system if the fiber optic
cable is disconnected, cut, or otherwise damaged. Whenever
power is applied to the diode, the laser controller will emit
808 nm pumping radiation through the fiber optic cable
connector. Eye and skin exposure to the emitted radiation is
possible if the cable is cut, damaged, or disconnected and
can result in serious injury and blindness.
Never open the shutter without appropriate personal
protective equipment in use.
Never look directly into the lens on the laser marking head
or at the reflected beam.

The E-series/E15 Laser Marking System is a Class 4 laser.

The installer must provide the appropriate enclosure and
safeguards for Class 1 operation.
Never disassemble, repair, or modify the laser marking
head. Potential electric shock and fire hazards exist. Only
Telesis-trained, Telesis-authorized service personnel are
permitted to service the laser marking head.
Never open panels during cleaning. Potential for electrical
shock exists. Components with high voltage exist inside.
To avoid electrical shock hazards, keep liquids away from
laser marking system.
Always assume that a laser beam is emitted when the
shutter is OPEN, even if the PC control is off or has been
disconnected from the laser controller. As with any laser,
the E-series/E15 Laser Marking System is capable of
emitting a laser beam any time the shutter is OPEN and
the laser controller is ON. During normal operation,
signals from the PC control laser beam emission.
However, beam emission is possible even if control from
the PC has been disconnected. The operator is advised to
take all required safety precautions when the shutter is
open as defined by ANSI Z136.1-2014.

E-series/E15 Installation & Maintenance

Specific Safety Alerts (continued)

Use of controls or adjustments or performance of
procedures other than those specified herein may result in
hazardous radiation exposure.
For safe operation, it is important that both the laser
marking head and the laser controller receive adequate
ventilation. Ensure there is sufficient open area around
the equipment for proper air circulation. Ensure there is
sufficient open area for access to any cable connections
on the rear panels of the laser controller and the laser
marking head.
Do not connect any power cable to power source until all
system connections are made.
Do not start the laser marking system until all installation
and preparation procedures are complete.
Never remove the cover from the laser marking head or
from the laser controller. Doing so may damage the
equipment and will void the warranty.
Never disconnect the fiber optic cable from the laser
controller. This will void the warranty. Only Telesis-trained,
Telesis-authorized, service personnel are permitted to
disconnect the fiber optic cable from the laser controller.
Always install the protective caps (provided) when a fiber
optic cable is disconnected from the laser marking head.
Install smaller cap on end of cable; install larger cap on
mating connector (on laser marking head).
Always wear powder-free, nitrile gloves when handling
the fiber optic cable.
Do not touch the end of the fiber optic cable. If the fiber
becomes scratched or damaged from mishandling or from
contact with foreign objects, burning or other similar
malfunctions may occur.

1.9 E-series/E15 Laser Safety Labeling

Illustrations on the following pages show the laser safety labels and their locations on the E-series/E15 Laser
Marking System equipment.
Additional labeling may be present if the laser marking system is installed in a custom enclosure. Custom
equipment is typically documented in a separate addendum that accompanies the laser marking system. Refer
to the custom documentation for details.

Familiarize yourself with the laser labels and their

2.3 Installation
The following procedures provide guidelines and instructions for installing the laser marking equipment.

Do not connect any power cable to power source until all

system connections are made.

2.3.1 Environmental Considerations

Before installing and operating the system, verify that the operating environment meets the following
guidelines.
• Avoid places where the system may be exposed to high levels of vibration, humidity, electrical noise,
dust, oil mist or other contaminants.
• The system is equipped with a thermoelectric cooling system. Although the system is fully functional
within the temperature range of 18° to 35°C (65° to 95°F), it is recommended that the ambient
operating temperature range remain between 20° and 25°C (68° and 77°F).
• Use an adequately rated fume extraction system for fumes and particulate caused by lasing. Failure to
use an appropriate fume extraction system can result in damaged optics and other hazards. Contact
Telesis Technical Services if you have questions or need more information.
• For safe operation, it is important that both the laser marking head and the laser controller receive
adequate ventilation. Ensure there is sufficient open area around the laser marking head and the laser
controller for proper air circulation. Ensure there is sufficient open area for access to any cable
connections on the rear panels of the laser controller and the laser marking head. Refer to the E-series
Laser Marking Head Dimensions drawings and the E15 Laser Controller Dimensions drawings for specific
envelope areas.
Note: The specified envelope around the laser controller and the laser marking head guarantees airflow
but does not guarantee adequate cooling. See System Specifications for system (total) power
consumption and laser marking head power consumption.
Note: The air intake has a replaceable filter. Insure the filter is clean and not clogged with dirt that can
restrict proper air flow. Replace filter at needed intervals based on the environment used.
• The laser controller and laser marking head are connected via a 1.75 m (5.74 ft) fiber optic cable
[optionally via a 4.75 m (15.58 ft) cable]. A portion of the fiber optic cable remains internally connected
in the laser controller. For installations involving a separation distance between the laser controller and
the laser marking head of more than 1.75 m (5.74 ft), or 4.75 m (15.58 ft) as applicable, regulations
require that additional laser radiation emissions warning devices be provided on both the controller and
the marking head.

Always wear powder-free, nitrile gloves when handling
the fiber optic cable.

The fiber optic cable assembly contains an interlock switch

assembly. The fiber optic cable must be connected to the
laser marking head to close the laser interlock circuit. If the
cable is disconnected, the laser interlock circuit will open.
The switch assembly can slide along the fiber optic cable
but must not be removed. Removal of or damage to the
tamper label covering screws that attach the switch
assembly to fiber cable will void the warranty.

 If the fiber optic cable is already connected to the marker, proceed to Step 4.
 Perform Steps 1 through 3 only if the fiber optic cables are disconnected from the marking head.

1. EVG4DS Only:
a. On the back panel of the laser marking
head, remove four M3 screws that attach
the fiber support top to the fiber support
bottom.
b. Remove two M5 screws that attach the fiber
support bottom to the back panel.

2. All Lasers:
a. Locate the Fiber Optic cable (71374-1 or
71375-1) attached to the laser controller.
b. Locate Telesis-supplied wrench (43172)
secured to fiber optic cable near the free end.
c. Carefully cut plastic wire-tie to remove
wrench.
d. Temporarily slide switch assembly away from
free end of fiber optic cable to allow room for EV4GS Only: Fiber Optic Cable Support
connection.
e. Remove protective caps from fiber optic cable and from mating connector on back of laser marking head.
f. To prevent scratching or any other damage to tip of fiber optic cable, gently insert fiber optic cable
straight into receptacle of laser marking head.
g. Using only the Telesis-supplied wrench, tighten cable connection finger tight, then no more than
1/16 turn.
h. Retain both protective caps and the wrench future use. These caps must be installed whenever the
fiber optic cable is disconnected. The bags attached to the fiber optic cables are provided for
storing the caps and wrench.
i. Carefully slide switch assembly over fiber cable and attach switch assembly securely to laser
marking head.

2.4 Embedded PC 24 VDC Connections

The E-series controller provides a 7/8-inch Minifast socket connector on the rear panel. The connector allows
system integrators to supply power to the embedded PC during events such as ESTOPs.

Before shipment, jumper (P/N 79156) is installed on the PC

24 VDC connector. The terminator jumpers are from Pin 1 to
Pin 2 and from Pin 3 to Pin 4. This uses the internal power
supply to power the embedded PC.

The customer/installer must supply the mating 7/8-inch Minifast connector and cabling to construct a cable for
the PC 24 VDC connector on the laser controller. Refer to the following table for pin assignments. Note if the
customer/installer does not use the provided connector, the pin assignment numbers on the connectors will
not match.

2.6 Shutter Interlock Connections

The E-series laser marking head provides an M12 socket connector on the rear panel. This interface allows
connection to a customer-supplied shutter interlock circuit. The shutter interlock may be used to automatically
close the shutter when an interlock door or switch is opened.

During shipment, Interlock Jumper (P/N 78280) is installed

on the Shutter Interlock connector. The terminator jumpers
are from Pin 1 to Pin 2 and from Pin 3 to Pin 4. This effectively
closes the shutter interlock circuits.

Interface Cable Requirements

The customer/installer must supply the mating M12P connector and cabling to construct an interface cable for
the Shutter Interlock Input connector on the laser marking head. Both interlock input circuits (Contact 1A-B
and Contact 2A-B) must be closed in order to open the laser shutter assembly. Refer to the following table for
pin assignments.

Note: The customer-supplied circuit must incorporate normally closed (NC), dry contact switches.

Pin # Signal / Function

1 Shutter Interlock Input Contact 1A
2 Shutter Interlock Input Contact 1B
3 Shutter Interlock Input Contact 2A
4 Shutter Interlock Input Contact 2B

When using a mechanical switch for the interlock signals, the

installer must verify the switch signal is stable within 50mS. Any
switch bounce after such time will result in a shutter error.

To use the Shutter Interlock feature:

1. Remove the interlock jumper (P/N 78280) from the Shutter Interlock Input connector.

2. Connect the customer-supplied circuit to laser marking head Shutter Interlock Input connector.

2.7 Shutter Monitor Connections

The E-series laser marking head contains a dual-sensor, self-monitoring safety circuit. The circuit uses two
Closed Sensor relays that are energized whenever the laser shutter mechanism is closed. The DB9P Dual Sensor
DB9P, located on the back panel of the laser marking head, allows you to monitor the status of the shutter. The
design has been evaluated to provide ratings of category 3, PLd, and PFHd of 5.73E-7.

Interface Cable Requirements

The dual-sensor circuit provides simple contact closures with which you can monitor the status of the laser
shutter. The customer/installer must supply the mating DB9S connector and cabling to construct an interface
cable that connects to the Dual Sensor connector. Refer to the following information when creating your

connect an I/O device to control the laser marking system. However, the laser may be controlled from only
one source – either by the laser controller front panel or by remote I/O devices. When the optional Pendant
interface is connected, the controls on the laser controller front panel are disabled. However, indicators on the
laser controller front panel will remain enabled.

During shipment, Remote Pendant Jumper (P/N 69737) is

installed on the Remote Pendant connector. The
terminator must be connected to enable the laser
controller front panel controls unless customer-supplied
I/O circuits are connected.

If optional I/O circuits will be used:

1. Remove the Remote Pendant Jumper (P/N 69737) from the controller.

Telesis offers optional kits that provide programmable I/O signals in addition to the standard input signals (Go,
Abort, Input 1 through Input 4) and standard output signals (Done, Ready, Paused, Output 1 through Output 3).
For more information on connecting and using the additional I/O signals, refer to the I/O Installation Supplement
provided in each of the kits.

Kits 53920 and 74445 do not provide opto-isolated signals.

Telesis does not endorse direct connection of I/O signals to the
I/O board. Direct connections to high current/high voltage
devices will damage the board.
If these kits are used, it is the responsibility of the
installer/integrator to provide opto-isolation between remote
I/O devices and the I/O board. Refer to the OEM User’s Guide
for signal limitations.

Kits 53920 and 74445

• When the marker receives a START PRINT command, both READY and DONE go off.
• DONE will go on after printing is complete. READY will go on after the marker returns to the Park
position, provided all parameters to continue printing are within limits (e.g., serial number limits are not
exceeded).
• If the print cycle is aborted, DONE will go on, but READY will remain off.

2.9.4 Remote Pattern Selection

The Merlin-II LS Remote Pattern Selection feature allows the marking system to monitor four dedicated input
signals (SELECT_1 through SELECT_4) transmitted from a remote, customer-supplied I/O device.
• For systems with an external computer, these signals are received either at the I/O board in the computer,
or at the STD I/O connector on the Merlin PCDIO Interface Module (depending on the I/O kit used).
• For systems with an embedded computer, these signals are received at the laser controller I/O port.

The On/Off combinations of the four input signals generate binary codes ranging from 0000 through 1111.
Each code corresponds to a specific pattern name stored in the Remote Pattern lookup table. When the
remote pattern selection feature is enabled, the software interprets the code from the four input signals and
loads the corresponding pattern.

The default file assignments reference patterns named PAT00.TTP through PAT15.TTP. If you intend to use the
lookup table as is, you must ensure that the patterns you wish to remotely select are identified exactly as
named in this table. Optionally, you may assign different pattern names to the codes.

Refer to the Merlin-II LS Operating Instructions (supplied with the marking system software) for complete
details on configuring and using the Remote Pattern Selection features.

2.11 Mark-on-the-Fly Configuration

Mark-on-the-fly (MOTF) is a feature that allows the laser marking system to mark on a moving object. The system
can mark objects moving through the marking window in either in a linear path or a circular path. See below.

Examples of Marking-on-the-Fly

2.11.1 Enabling Mark-on-the-Fly

Mark-on-the-fly features are available only if the Laser/Galvo Controller board (Telesis #60074) is configured
for mark-on-the-fly operations and only if the feature is enabled and configured in the laser marking software.
• For systems with an external computer, the Laser/Galvo Controller board is installed in the external
system computer.
• For systems with an embedded computer, the Laser/Galvo Controller board is installed in the laser controller.
Refer to the Merlin II LS Operation Instructions for information on enabling and configuring mark-on-the-fly
operations. See Enabling Mark-on-the-Fly for details.

2.11.2 Connecting an Encoder

Communicating the speed of movement of the marking surface to the Laser/Galvo Controller board is crucial
for proper mark-on-the-fly operations.
• If the speed of movement is not variable, an encoder may not be required if the precise speed is known
and is consistent.
• A customer-supplied, quadrature shaft encoder should be used if the speed of movement is variable.
The encoder constantly measures the speed of movement and communicates the data to the
Laser/Galvo Controller board.

82024D 2-45
E-series/E15 Installation & Maintenance

If an optional encoder will be used, you must fabricate an interface cable and connect the encoder to the
Laser/Galvo Controller board. Refer to the following information to for cable and connection details.
• For systems with an external computer, the encoder connector is located on the Laser/Galvo Controller
board itself.
• For systems with an embedded computer, the laser controller provides a DB15S connector labeled MOTF.

Required Equipment
• Laser/Galvo Controller board configured for mark-on-the-fly operations
• Customer-supplied quadrature shaft encoder
• Customer-supplied TTL-level Part Position Detector
Note: A TTL-level part position detector should be used to automatically trigger marking
at the required moment every time a moving object is under the marker.
• Customer-supplied interface cable. See Interface Cable Requirements (below) for details.

Interface Cable Requirements

The customer/installer must supply the mating DB15P connector and cabling to construct an interface cable
between the encoder and the external computer or laser controller, as applicable. Refer to the following for
cabling details.
• The encoder signals must be RS422 differential signals.
• The interface cable must be constructed using shielded, twisted-pair cabling.
• The interface cable shield must be terminated at the DB15P (mating connector) shell only.
• Refer to the following table for pin assignments when constructing the interface cable.
Note: Note that the Laser/Galvo Controller board has the ability to interface two encoders (X or Y).
However, most applications will use only the X-encoder connection.

uses an industry standard M12 socket connector that can be used to directly connect a variety of standard
sensors to the laser controller.

The /Start2 signal from the MOTF Part Present connector is OR tied with the /Start2 signal on the MOTF DB15
connector.
• When MOTF is enabled, the /Start2 signal becomes the Part Present signal. This signal controls MOTF
operations as defined by the Part Present parameter setting in the software. Refer to the Merlin II LS
Operating Instructions (Marker Properties) to enable/disable MOTF operations and to configure the MOTF
parameters.

When MOTF is disabled, the software treats the /Start2

signal like a normal Start Print signal. The MOTF Part
Present connection should not be used to initiate the Start
Print cycle. In some applications, a part present sensor
may trigger while the part is still moving. Further, if such
applications are manually loaded, the mark could begin
while the operator is still loading the part.

The /Start2 signal is a TTL input signal and should be treated accordingly.

The installer must ensure that only NPN style sensors are used so that no sourcing signal is placed on the
/Start2 signal.

Refer to the following table for pin assignments.

Laser Controller Part Present Connector – Pin Assignments

(viewed from connector side)

Pin # Signal / Function

1 +24 VDC

2 not used

3 24 VDC Return

4 /START2 MOTF Enabled: Initiates the on-the-fly-mark (after the print cycle has been
started) based on the settings of the Part Present parameter in the
software.
MOTF Disabled: Triggers a Start Print.

2.13 System Preparation

To prepare the E-series/E15 Laser Marking System for operation, please perform the following procedures.

DO NOT POWER OR OPERATE THE LASER MARKING SYSTEM

WITH THE FIBER OPTIC CABLE DISCONNECTED.
Never power system or operate the system if the fiber optic
cable is disconnected, cut, or otherwise damaged. There is
no interlock to stop laser beam emission if the fiber optic
cable is disconnected. Eye and skin exposure to the emitted
radiation is possible if the cable is cut, damaged, or
disconnected and can result in serious injury and blindness.
Never open the shutter without appropriate personal
protective equipment in use.
Never look directly into the lens on the laser marking head
or at the reflected beam.

Use of controls or adjustments or performance of

procedures other than those specified herein may result in
hazardous radiation exposure.
Do not start the laser marking system until all installation
procedures are complete.

1. Start the system. Refer to the E-series/E15 Operation Supplement.

2. All system computers supplied by Telesis are configured to use the default Windows® video driver.
If the system uses a separate, external computer and it was supplied by a source other than Telesis, it
is recommended that you disable any adapter-specific video driver which may be installed. You should
use the default Windows® video driver instead. Refer to the Windows® documentation for details on
using the Windows® Device Manager.

3. Adjust the beam focus.

 Refer to the E-series/E15 Operation Supplement for specific lens information.
 Refer to the Merlin II LS Operating Instructions to calibrate the laser beam and the aiming diode.

4. If applicable, configure the laser marking system software for mark-on-the-fly operations.
 Refer to the Merlin II LS Operating Instructions for details. See Enabling Mark-on-the-Fly.

5. Shut down the system. Refer to the E-series/E15 Operation Supplement.

3.3 Cleaning
Basic cleaning of the system should be conducted on a daily basis. Dirt, debris, and other build up may cause
inaccurate operation and malfunction of the system. The marking system is composed of sensitive optical and
mechanical parts that are crucial for marking performance. Even minor damage to one of these parts may
jeopardize the performance of the entire system. If the laser marking system is exposed to excess dust, the
optical parts may become damaged by dirt that is burnt by the laser beam.

The frequency of cleaning depends on the number of operations and the types of materials being marked.
Consequently, increased use of the system and materials with higher levels of particles will require more
cleaning. Inspect the system and its applications to determine proper cleaning cycles.

3.3.1 General Cleaning Procedures

When cleaning the system, please take notice of the following:
 Turn the system OFF.
 Disconnect all power cables before cleaning.
Do not disconnect the fiber optic cable from the laser marking head.
 Thoroughly remove loose debris and vacuum the inner part of the working area.
 Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a mild liquid detergent solution to clean the working field.
 Do not use liquid detergent that is highly concentrated.
 To prevent electrical components from being exposed to liquid, do not spray the cleaning solution
directly into the working field. Instead, spray the cleaning solution onto the cleaning cloth.
