1. Briefly discuss the impact of ICT to the following and give examples:
▪ Education
ICT enhances teaching, for example, educators now teach with pictures and videos with the
help of ICT tools like computers, projectors, and printers. Before these tools were introduced, a
lot of teachers used to draw images on manila cards and boards which takes much of their
energy and time. Also, ICT has made learning easier than before. Apparently, when the internet
was barely around and running, students would look for a hardcopy of books for their research.
But now, students do research and do assignments by themselves with the help of google in
their phones, tablets, and computers. Especially now that we are facing a global phenomenon
which is the pandemic, the operation inside all educational institutes has been put into a halt
and was advised to resume in each student’s home. Because of that, the internet has been a
great help since then. Now, a lot of students now attend school, do exercises and assignments
from home. Students now enroll into schools online, pursue a course and earn a certificate at
the end of the course. This means that they learn from anywhere and anytime without being in
any physical classroom.
▪ Employment
ICT can contribute to income generation and poverty reduction. ICT systems can save time
in the workplace and make us more productive because they can manage, analyze, and transmit
large amounts of data. Also, it enables people and enterprises to capture economic
opportunities by increasing process efficiency, promoting participation in expanded economic
networks, and creating opportunities for employment. In Chile, for example, an Internet network
among farmer organizations has dramatically increased farmers’ incomes by providing
information about crop status, weather, global market prices and training. ICTs also provide
unprecedented access to rural finance service. The financial and information service network
provided by Pride Africa offers micro-finance opportunities for local people and small enterprises
that previously had no access to flexible financing due to rigid banking regulations and the
information monopolies of government and large businesses.
▪ Business
When it comes to businesses, ICT assist business activities including design, manufacturing,
R&D, distribution and sales, and feedback because ICT makes a business more efficient,
effective, and promptly respond to customer’s needs. One example I could think of is probably
the delivery culture here in the Philippines. As we all know, businesses like Grab, Foodpanda,
Lalamove, etc. has going on for awhile and made people’s life a lot easier. With just one click or a
tap in your screen, food or other necessities could be right at your doorsteps. Aside from that,
businesses that has been having trouble since the start of pandemic because of the lockdown
could resort to being able to work from home. Or better yet, a lot of employees that have been
terminated starts their own online business.
▪ Health Sector
Technology plays a big role in the health sector; ICT has revolutionized healthcare in many
developing countries by more efficiently disseminating public health information and facilitating
consultation in health issues. Thanks to the internet and various social media platforms; we can
receive following announcements or guidelines regarding the Corona Virus and how to stay safe
and protected against it. Furthermore, considering the lockdowns that we have been through,
selected health care institutes have launched a program wherein patients could have online
consultations with a physician which is very convenient for both of their parts. Lastly, we should
also consider the medical equipment as an impact of ICT in the health sector. Equipment such as
medical ventilators, dialysis machines, incubator, medical laser, etc.
▪ E-Commerce/Online Shopping
Just like how ICT impacts businesses, it also changed the way people shop and the way that
shops and retailers operate. The range of products available online continues to grow and
people are increasingly more confident buying online. Almost anything can be bought on the
internet, including electronics, furniture, books, CDs, DVDs, and food. A very good example of
this online shopping is Shopee and Lazada, online stores that has been on the rise even before
the pandemic hits. With the help of ICT, shopping has been more convenient than ever and safer
at this point of time.
▪ Communication
ICT empowers people to share knowledge and advice instantaneously. Therefore, I think that
in this generation, people rely heavily on ICT for communication and everyday functions. Not
only that ICT has effectively improved the way society does business but also for us to take a
stand on debates or discussion about the government in other social media platforms and to
give our honest opinions and be a carrier of great news that is going to spread across the nation.
Having that said, ICT also helps us to communicate with our love ones who is on abroad or a
family member that is affected by the virus through messaging applications such as Messenger,
Gmail, Zoom, etc.
▪ Banking Sector
ICT help banks improve the efficiency and effectiveness of services offered to customers, and
enhances business processes, managerial decision making, and workgroup collaborations, which
strengthens their competitive positions in rapidly changing and emerging economies. Also, we
have the so called “online banking” and other type on online saving accounts such as Gcash,
Paymaya, Paypal, etc. Credit and debit cards are also an example of the impact of ICT in the
banking sector. In addition, ICT also provides the framework for banking industry to meet
challenges in the present competitive environment. IT enables to cut the cost of global fund
transfer.
▪ Multimedia
For the Multimedia, ICT has paved way for content creators to share with the world their
talent as well as their passion. Through ICT, a lot of people are now creating their own YouTube
channel for vlogging. As a result, amateur video editors also have been given opportunities to
hone their skills more.
▪ Entertainment
ICT has improved the quality of entertainment and leisure activities by developing better
graphics for music and movies. As we all know, today we have better equipment in creating films
that resulted to better CGI’S, filters, sound and visual effects which makes the audience
appreciate the movies better. There are a lot of streaming sites online that we could say ICT
impacted the entertainment aspect a lot. For example, there is Netflix, Viu, Disney, also Spotify,
Youtube Music and many more.
2. Give one impact of ICT to your future profession/field, site examples.
For me, being a future Architect, ICT could impact the industry through creating
opportunities on building Smart Cities that could raise the economic growth of the Nation
because of its popularity. Also, ICT can impact an Architect’s perspective in a way that it will
show in her designs. For example, if I were to design a residential space for a celebrity, safety
and security will be on the top of my list for consideration that’s why, I would prefer to use
Smart systems in the house to accommodate safety.
