CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the background of
the study, the statement of the problem, significance of the study, the scope and delimitation,
conceptual framework, and definition of terms of the study.

A. Background of the Study:

Being in the field of business and taking a courage to establish a business and starting from
a scratch and only have the hope of gaining profit is a big financial risk so it is necessary to
possess a good and well-founded entrepreneurial skill. ABM strand is a very effective
business field since it mainly focuses of learning basic concept of business associated with
the skills needed (Tutor, N.D).

The students under ABM strand need to compromise with the different skills they need to
possess in order to gain success with their field. Staying firmly grounded to the reality when
it comes to budgeting is necessarily needed that demand money management skills such as
being wise in handling money, good planner, smart in investment, borrowing money wisely
(Skills You Need, n.d.) and a great decision-making skill since every step taken consumes
cost of money. Based on Small Business Development Corporation (Nd), establishing a
small business requires skills in financial management, marketing, sales and customer
service, communication and negotiation, leadership, project management and planning,
delegation and time management, problem solving, and networking.

Being a good marketer nowadays, you need to have an ability to understand buyer needs
and the sales process, solid grasp of analytic, strong understanding of Inbound marketing,
ability to communicate effectively and clearly, able to do oral and writing skills, experienced
in performing digital tools, platforms and channels, advertising skills, have a critical thinking
and problem-solving skills(Iron Paper, 2016), Aside from that entrepreneur essentially needs
an innovation skills and according to Janice Francisco doing innovation requires creativity,
problem-solving skills, risk-assessment and risk-taking skills, communication skills,
relationship-building skills, and implementation skills. This study aims to describe all the
entrepreneurial skills of ABM students and rank their prefer ability based on the gender.
2

Acquiring an enough knowledge and skills in Entrepreneurship needs a numerous of factors

in gaining them. Time is one of the most essential since it is the span of how long or short
does the students allotted in generating the skills they need, but it was greatly affected due
to pandemic since the students don't spend a face-to-face time of learning the skills at
school and only have a limited source of learning at home. In addition, there's also a huge
barrier between the communication of students with their teacher due to unstable internet
connection and limited medium of learning. Also, the mental issues that the pandemic
causes to the students as it affects student's energy level, concentration, dependability,
mental ability, and optimism, hindering performance (Suicide Prevention Resource Center,
Nd).

Young students have the inevitable power of doing things with great courage and they look
out to ditch the corporate rat race (India Education, N.D) but it would not be possible without
a proper program that will help them to have a great journey and continuously help students
to chase the pavements. Together with a proper motivation for the aspiring entrepreneur.
This study is very helpful in providing the proper knowledge regarding the entrepreneurial
skills of students of Kasiglahan Village Senior High School.

At this time of pandemic, we are in the situation of gradually decreasing the economy and
financial market of our country. Significant reductions in income, also the increasing rate of
unemployed people and disruptions in the transportation service and manufacturing
industries. The covid - 19 pandemic has caused direct impact on income due to premature
deaths, workplace absenteeism and reduction of productivity and has created annotative
supply shock with manufacturing productive activity slowing down due to global supply chain
disruption and closures of factories, that's why entrepreneur had a big role to bring back the
economy of our country and make it stable like before because the skill that the entrepreneur
have is one of the greatest and powerful weapon that we had for us to help the depression in
our economy because entrepreneur creates a new business, they are innovator, a source of
new idea and they boost economic growth by introducing innovative technologies, product
and services also entrepreneurship is one of the most influential and more countries are
experiencing growth because entrepreneurial rentiers taking place everywhere. It is also a
key factor that promotes economic development in multiple different ways for a community.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

FINANCIAL SKILLS

Financial skills are the necessary soft and hard skills needed to work in financial
industry. The financial strategies are vital for a firm’s earning policies to be followed and its
financial stability to be maintained. A person that possesses financial literacy and have an
ability to understand money management can effectively allocate their earnings to their
priorities, and also limiting or minimizing their debt. An individual who’s skilled in financial is
capable of using relevant knowledge and understanding to approach sudden situation in
most flexible and efficient manner, and able to turn problem to strength that bridges
disadvantage to benefits. In addition, having a financial skills means being knowledgeable,
able to conduct assessment, and well enough to manage finances resources required to
start a business and create profitable, creative, and long-term strategies within it.

Mandell (2009) characterizes budgetary education as “the capacity to utilize information and
abilities to oversee one’s money related assets viably for lifetime budgetary security.” Huston
(2010) clarifies that monetary proficiency is made up of two components: understanding
utilize. Understanding budgetary education suggests that an individual is learned almost
individual fund, and applies such information in managing with one’s funds. Bernheim, et al
(2001) accept that in spite of the fact that budgetary education could be a somewhat new,
arrangement activities in money related education isn’t. In 1950s, the Joined together states
started suggesting arrangement to move forward the quality of individual monetary choice
making through monetary instruction thru the “inclusion of individual finance, economic, and
other buyer instruction topics” to children selected within the K-12 instructive educational
modules. Financial literacy is described as a person’s competency for money management
(Remund,2010). The concept of financial literacy has not always been known by that name,
but the concept itself dates back to the early 1900s and the beginning of consumer
education research and initiatives in the united states (Jelly,1958). Based on research
studies since 2000, there are many conceptual definitions of financial literacy. These
definitions fall into five categories (a) knowledge of financial concepts, (b) ability to
communicate about financial concepts, (c) ability to manage personal finances (d) skills level
in making acceptable financial decision and (e) ability to plan effectively for future financial
needs.
7

When students graduate from high school, they often experience independence that
includes (a) moving out on their own, (b) forming new relationship and (c) supporting
themselves financially. However, according to data from the National Longitudinal Transition
Survey -2, only 38% of youth with disabilities have lived independently outside the family
home within 3 to 5 years of exiting high school. One key aspect of independence is having
financial skills. This is an area that youth with disabilities are struggling with: students with
disabilities were less likely than their general education peers to have a checking account
(59 percent vs. 74 percent) or a credit card (41 percent vs. 61 percent). (Newman et
al.,2011). Browder and Grasso (1999) described why financial literacy is important for
individuals with the autonomy to earn, manage, and spend their own money have greater
control over their life. Individuals with disabilities often do not have control their finances due
to lack of skills, opportunity, or both. Without the ability to control their finances, these
individuals may lack the autonomy to make key decisions about their lives (e.g., where to
live, what to eat, what to wear, and what to do for fun).

MARKETING STYLE OR STRATEGY

Marketing style or strategy are the detailed strategy that contains all of a company’s
marketing priorities and objectives that aims to make a profit by promoting a product or
service. Simply, these are the company’s overall game plan for reaching out to potential
customers of their products or services. To ensure that marketing style will fall into place, it is
very important to take account with the four Ps or product, price, place, and promotion. A
strong marketing style or strategy should resolve around the company’s value, which tells
customers what the company stands for, how it works, and why they must do business with
it. This provides marketing teams with structure that can guide their campaigns through the
company’s entire product and service spectrum. Aside from that, the marketing strategy
directs the marketing plan, which is a statement that specifies the various types of marketing
initiatives that a company undertakes in and includes timelines for applying innovative
marketing initiatives.

Marketing plays a central role in today’s economy and is crucial to organizational success
(Kotler,1994). Through education marketing has been discussed in the education field in
many western countries since the 1980s, it is rarely discussed in Eastern countries (Li &
Hung,2009). Marketing strategies are powerful processes that give an organization a
competitive advantage and deliver products that satisfy customers. On the whole, faculty
members and administrators at higher education institutions are no longer disdainful of such
traditional marketing principles as positioning, the strategic management of resources,
effectively pricing, and promotion (Mulnix, Cojanu, & Pettine 2011). A marketing strategy is
composed of several interrelated components called the “marketing mix”. The marketer
8

McCarthy proposed the ‘4P” classification in 1960 (McCarthy, 1960), which expanded to 5P,
6P, and 7P (Armstrong & Kotler, 2006; Kotler & Keller, 2009; Walker & Mullins, 2008).
Marketing strategies differ depending on each organization’s situation. This study focuses on
seven key marketing strategies: place, promotion, price, product, people, market position,
and physical evidence.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

An individual who possesses management skills need to have a good business

planning, decision-making, collaboration, delegation, and time management. These skills are
critical for top management to effectively run an enterprise and achieve desirable financial
goals. It is vital since they can help your business run smoothly and also help you succeed in
your career. A manager’s main responsibility, in addition to managing, is to business are
functioning together. A lack of integration can lead to plenty of issues, including failure. From
the top leadership to intermediate supervisors to first-level managers, management skills are
done for a variety of tasks and at various levels of an organization. Some of management
skills need to applied are: technical skills, conceptual skills, and human or interpersonal
skills.

Previous studies have found that individual positive financial management practices have
been the single most influential of household solvency status and financial satisfaction (Joo
& Grable 2004; Parotta & Johnson, 1998). Individual monetary issue is generally cited as a
caused of work place trouble. Moo compensation, overspending, overwhelming obligations,
investing conduct and need of knowledge around cash are the most causes of individuals
(workers) monetary problems. In 2004, there were 16,251 buyer liquidation were recorded,
which expanded up to 32% (12,351 in 2003) from the past year (Malaysian Central Bank,
2005). Sporakowski (1979) contended that budgetary issues cause stretch and emergency.
The number of items varies for different skills as every single skill requires a specific
description. The various management skills that the individuals need to inculcate to achieve
their professional and personal goals and sustain their living conditions efficiently have been
stated as follows: Developing Self Awareness is regarded as the first and foremost
management skills. This would enable the individuals to generate awareness in terms of
oneself the individuals are able to recognize the limitation and put into practices the
measures to bring about improvement. In order to develop self-awareness, it is necessary to
make provision of opportunities to the students (Whetten, & Cameron, 2011). All items
relating to one skill form one subscale of the questionnaire. Based on reliabi lity analysis we
removed one item that did not contribute to the quality of individual subscale. We averaged
the skills’ evaluation by many subordinates as an evaluation by less than 6 subordinates
have low reliability (Conway & Huffcutt, 1997).

In conclusion, in terms of management skills, the computed mean is 4.19 which is consider
as a strongly agree.

This is being corroborated by the study of (Whetten, & Cameron, 2011) The various
management skills that the individuals need to inculcate to achieve their professional and
personal goals and sustain their living conditions efficiently.

III. How does entrepreneurial skills influence to the respondents

Demographic factors were used as independent variables in this analysis. We only

focused on four demographic features in order to obtain demographic knowledge of
respondents: gender, age, and the unique route, which is ABM students. Concerning to age
of the participants, a huge number of respondents were in between age of 18-20 years old
which is 80% of the population needed as for entrepreneurial performance is influenced by
factors such as gender, age, education, and experience. This study will aid the students in
enhancing entrepreneurs’ entrepreneurial abilities through the provision of funds and skill
