Contract/Delivery Descriptor

Role Title: Visiting Lecturer/Tutor

Contract: Casual Worker

Reporting to: Academic Manager

Main function of contract:

To provide tuition on one or more of the following ULaw courses: the LLB, the Graduate
Diploma in Law (GDL), the Legal Practice Course (LPC), the MA Law, the Bar Practice
Course (BPC), Professional Skills Courses/Professional Development, LLM, and/or any
other University of Law courses to the best possible standard.

This is a Casual Worker role: the University’s requirement for casual workers varies from
time to time. Work will be offered on a flexible “as required” basis with no entitlement to a
minimum numbers of hours of work per day, week, month or year.

Specific Responsibilities:

Programme Delivery

 To teach, supervise, give feedback and assess on the University courses in such
subjects as may be assigned to you from time to time. This will include teaching and
assessing students across a range of written and oral skills and giving individual
feedback on students’ performances.
 To assist in the preparation of assignments and assessments, as required.
 To mark and moderate students’ written assignments, coursework assessments and
examinations within stated deadlines and to the required standard.
 To participate in course design and review, as required.
 To participate in the presentation and/or design of the Professional Skills Course, and
Professional Development courses and other University activities and programmes as
required.

Client Development

 To act as a personal tutor to a number of students, including being available and willing
to assist with students’ problems as they arise, their performance generally, and writing
references where requested.

Teamwork

 To contribute to the effectiveness of team performance when delivering the programme.


 To participate in subject teams and fulfil assigned tasks.

 To promote and sustain a constructive, supportive and friendly working relationship
with all customers/students, external and internal, immediate and prospective and
senior management and other work colleagues.

Professional Skills

 To receive and engage with further training in learning and teaching techniques as
provided from time to time.
 To receive and engage with the initial induction training, including practice teaching
sessions with feedback.
 To participate in the Quality Assurance programme of Tutor Observation by senior
members of staff, including feedback on performance.
 To submit and receive feedback on student Teaching Quality Evaluation Forms.
 To keep up to date with developments and innovations in both the legal profession and
Higher Education by participating in legal practice and Higher Education research.

This role may be based in campus, face to face or require on-line delivery from home,
therefore, the individual must have a suitable space at home to work from, if required.
During working hours the individual must carry out work for the University in a room used
only for that purpose and ensure there is minimum risk of disruption to working in that
room during those hours.
The individual has a duty to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves
and of other persons with whom they come into contact at work. The individual also has a
duty to co-operate with the University in complying with any statutory duty or requirement
concerning health and safety at work. In particular, they must familiarise themselves with
the Health and Safety Policy relating to working from home.
