Introduction
Definition of heritage
It contains wonderful archaeological remains, but it certainly has a distinct identity and personality that distinguishes
it from any other place.
It has already been pointed out that the general image of the city partially stems from the distinct topographical
nature and urban formation, as well as from the golden color of the original Salt stone. Another factor affecting
the formation of identity is the architectural elements available in the more than 600 buildings of heritage with
a consistent architectural style dating back to the late Ottoman era, which form a visual connection for the
viewer. Which has disappeared in many other Jordanian cities.
The Physical Context
The Salt urban area is defined by its steep topography in which narrow
Al-Salt
streets follow the contours, with hairpin bends which make
vehicular access very difficult. Its special character derives from its
location on well‐defined hills separated by deep valleys. Streets
along the contours give the urban layout its characteristic stepped
form on the steep hillsides; and flights of steps (shown in brown on
the map below right) provide numerous short cuts for pedestrians.
It is largely this combination of built form and topography that gives
Salt its distinctive physical identity.
The city’s character is emphasized by the location of important buildings either on the hilltops (the
prominent Al Qala mosque and the famous college) or in the valley beds (the Grand Mosque in Al Ain
Square, the Municipality and the Cultural Centre). A second characteristic visual feature of the city
comes directly from the local geology which provides the distinctive yellow stone of many of the
The project of restoring the heritage house of Falah Al-Hamad is one of
the projects that receives great attention in the city of Al-Salt, in order
to rehabilitate it so that it becomes an academy for training in the
maintenance and rehabilitation of heritage buildings, amidst ambition

for the academy to be a regional center in this field due to its scarcity.
Hamd's house
It was of importance in serving the city of Salt and the Balqa
governorate as a whole in terms of preserving and
protecting the historical and heritage character
The house of Falah Al-Hamad is located in the “Wadi Al-Akrad” area on the main street
called “Saeed Abu Jaber Street”, in the city of Al-Salt. It was built between 1890 and
1918, and it consists of two floors, the ground floor. It was used as a mill that continued
to operate until the seventies. Then it was used later as stables, while the first floor was
used as an guest house.

Conclusion
• The urban area of Al-Salt is defined by its steep topography and the shape of the building, this
combination of the building form and the topography is the approach that shows the physical identity of Al-
Salt.
• The area is distinguished by the yellow stone industry and its use in its buildings, so heritage buildings must
be preserved as much as possible.
• Preserving the condition of the building from the inside and benefiting from the internal divisions in a positive
way by providing the appropriate function.
• Take advantage of the multiple entrances in the building to create more than one entrance according to use.
• Surrounding places include places of entertainment, cafes and restaurants, in addition to cultural
places. This makes us take them into consideration when choosing the appropriate job.
• In memory of the owner of the house, Falah Al-Hamad, as one of the most important men of Al-Salt and
a former member of the Municipality of Al-Salt, we decided to recount his biography and work in a special
section in the house.
