STUDY GUIDE 5: PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2

GRADE LEVEL GRADE 11

TOPIC/TITLE Data Collection & Analysis
WEEK/S: WEEK 9-10

I. Introduction
Time to collect your data to be able to answer your research.
Let us therefore set our goal for this lesson: To demonstrate understanding of the
following:
1. data collection procedures and skills using varied instruments
2. data processing, organizing, and analysis
Our lessons will include video discussions, reading your textbook, writing and
speaking activities to develop our understanding of our topic. Quizzes and exams will
likewise be a part of our learning.

II. Discussion of the topic and Self-Check

Specifically a set of learning competencies and essential questions must be our guide
for each lesson and for this lesson they are as follows:
LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

1. Collect data using appropriate instruments

2. Present and interprets data in tabular or graphical forms
3. Use statistical techniques to analyze data – study of differences and relationships limited for
bivariate analysis
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
1. What is the best data collecting instrument for our research?
2. How is it best to present our gathered data?

Note: Please refer to last entry of this study guide on how to pass all activities for this Study
Guide

Now that your experiment or your survey is finished data may now be collected.
Quantitative data –data that is measurable is our focus. How do you collect these measurable
data?
Page 102 enumerates observation and survey plus experiment and content analysis as the right
instruments and techniques to do so.
Observation is when you watch and listen to your respondents then record the results of your
observation. You may directly observe your respondents if you personally engaged with
respondents, however if you listened to and or watched other mediums to collect date this is
indirect observation.
When one surveys he uses interviews and questionnaires. For interviews an order of interview
questions is necessary as stated on page 103. Do not forget that your interview questions need
to follow the guidelines in their formulation as mentioned on page 103 of your book,
To practice your knowledge on interview answer Activities 3 & 4 on pages 109 and 110.Write
your answers in your A
The questionnaire will be most helpful if there is a big number of respondents. It is formulated
in a multiple choice type and replies will give the respondent’s preferences. This may be done
personally, or through postal or electronic mail, however there is no assurance of the return of
all questionnaires sent through postal or electronic mail.
The scientific way to collect data or experimentation involves: giving of treatment to subject,
evaluate results to know the effect of the treatment to the subject and then find out the reason
of the effect. The selection of subjects, pre testing, application of treatment and the post test
are part of each experiment.
The fourth way one may collect data is through Content Analysis to include the 1930’s
introduced Media Content Analysis. The language, the motives or purposes and its
acceptability to the audience are examined.
Quantitative data is measured using the nominal scale, the ordinal scale, ratio scale and the
interval scale.
A.Nominal scale- categorizes data according to a certain criteria, used in qualitative data
analysis
B.Ordinal scale- categorizes according to rank to know which data must be 1 st, 2nd,etc in the
group, used in qualitative data analysis
C.Interval scale-categorizes data according to the differences of the views of the respondents,
used in quantitative data analysis
D. Ratio scale-categorizes data according to the rating given from zero to a certain point,
used in quantitative data analysis

How did you measure the data you collected? Please write your answer in your Activity
Notebook.
Using statistics your collected quantitative data may now be examined, classified and
recorded to explain if any, the relationships of the data collected to the hypothesis and to be
able to prove the hypothesis. Please follow the steps in quantitative data analysis on page 118
as you work on your data analysis. Your probability & statistics lessons on frequency
distribution, measure of central tendency, mean, median, mode and standard deviation will be
reviewed in pages 120-121 of your book.
Notable advanced quantitative analytical methods used by graduate level students are listed
and defined on page 121 of your book.
Your research work is paired with statistical methodologies to be able to analyze, plan,
interpret and organize data in relation to the design of the experimental method that you
chose.
There are two statistical methodologies defined in your book- Descriptive and Inferential.
Which of the two did you use for your research paper? Write your answer in your Activity
Notebook.
Since most if not all your research works have both dependent and independent variables, the
bivariate analysis of statistical data will be most utilized. However it is good to know that the
analysis of 1 variable is called univariate analysis while multivariate analysis deals with the
analysis of multiple relations between multiple variables.
Under Bivariate analysis page 129 discusses the 2 methods: Correlation and Cross tabulation.
Present the data you have collected in cross tabulation form , use your activity notebook.
For offline learners, write your answer in your Activity Notebook and pass on the scheduled
day/date. For online learners, encode all your answers in a word document saved as W9-
10SurnameName .doc (W9-10CuaAnn.doc) and upload in the CLE forum to be posted by
your teacher.

III. Evaluation:
1.Teacher-made quiz items
2.Essay questions
