SECTION 1

INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION

1.1 This procedure describes the calibration of the Biddle 55003, 550005 Transformer Turn Ratio Test Set or
the Biddle 55030 Portable Auxiliary Transformer. The instrument being calibrated is referred to herein as the TI
(Test Instrument).

1.2 All comments concerning this procedure should be directed to Navy Measurement Science Directorate,
Naval Warfare Assessment Center, P.O. Box 5000, Corona, CA 91718–5000.

1.3 This procedure includes tests of essential performance parameters only. Any malfunction noticed during
calibration, whether specifically tested for or not, should be corrected.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

NOTE

Minimum use specifications are the principal parameters required for performance of the
calibration, and are included to assist in the selection of alternate equipment, which may be used
at the discretion of the using laboratory. Satisfactory performance of alternate items shall be
verified prior to use. All applicable equipment must bear evidence of current calibration.

The instruments utilized in this procedure were selected from those known to be available at
Navy calibration facilities, and the listing by make or model number carries no implication of
preference, recommendation, or approval for use by other agencies. It is recognized that
equivalent equipment produced by other manufacturers may be capable of equally satisfactory
performance in this procedure.

PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS

3.1 Set all ratio dials to zero. Connect TI H1 clip to H2 clip. Ensure that the ”x” clamp screws do not touch
their anvils and that the clamps do not touch each other. Verify that all meters indicate zero.

2
NAVAIR 17–20AE–163L

3.2 Crank the TI generator to maintain an 8–volt indication on the TI voltmeter; then verify that the
ammeter remains at zero indication and that the null detector indication is zero 1/16 of an inch.

3.3 Close the screws of the X1 – X2 clamps on their respective anvils; if necessary place copper washers in the
clamps to make sure that the screws make good contact with the anvils. (Do not allow X1 and X2 to short or
contact H1 or H2). Short H1 to H2.

3.4 Set the TI fourth ratio dial to .050 and crank the generator until the TI voltmeter indicates 8V. Verify that
the null detector deflects to the right to a position corresponding to the letter ”R” in the word detector. This
deflection is usually about 3/8 of an inch and typically, the pointer is positioned between the letters ”O” and ”R”
of the word detector.

3.5 Readjust the TI fourth ratio dial to zero. While cranking the generator for an 8–volt meter indication adjust
the TI fourth dial to null the detector. Verify that the fourth dial indication is within zero half a division.

3.6 Short X1 and X2 clamps together, and crank the generator about 120 rpm (same speed used to obtain an
8–volt indication); verify that the ammeter indication is about full scale (9 divisions or more).

3.7 Remove the short between X1 and X2 clamps, and disconnect the H2 clip from H1 clip.

3.8 Crank the TI generator at about 120 rpm and verify that the TI voltmeter indication is 8V or more

CALIBRATION PROCESS

NOTE

Unless otherwise specified, verify the results of each test and take corrective action whenever
the test requirement is not met, before proceeding.

4.1 TTR TESTS

4.1.1 Connect the TI test leads to the corresponding terminals of the reference transformer, item 2.1. Connect
the equipment ground terminals together and connect one of them to any convenient ground available.

4.1.2 Perform the measurements listed below as follows:

4.1.2.1 Set the reference–transformer ratio dials for the ratio settings listed below, and set the TI ratio dials for
the corresponding certified values listed in the reference–transformer report of calibration. List these nominal
(nom) values in the checklist.

*If possible, use both the TI third and fourth dials. For example if the nominal value from report of
calibration listed is (0) (0).(2), set the ratio dial to: (0) (0).(1) (100).

4.1.2.2 Crank the TI generator (approximately 120 rpm) until an 8–volt indication is maintained within the
upper and lower graduation limits of the TI meter 8–volt graduation mark.

4.1.2.3 While crank TI generator, simultaneously obtain a TI detector null indication by adjusting the TI ratio
dials as necessary. Verify that the TI ratio–dial indication at null is within the tolerance limits.

4.3 If no other measurement is to be performed disconnect the test setup and secure the equipment.

4.2 AUXILIARY TRANSFORMER TESTS

4.2.1 Connect the TTR item 2.2 (transformer turns ratio test set) to the reference transformer item 2.1, and set
the reference transformer ratio dials for 100. Corresponding to this ratio setting, obtain the actual value listed
from the report of calibration. Note the correction factor (CF): CR = 100 – actual value listed from report of
calibration. (CF can be a positive or negative number; keep track of sign).

4.2.2 Characterize the TTR for the 100–ratio reference; Crank the TTR generator and establish a galvanometer
null by adjusting the TTR ratio dials. At null, note the TTR final ratio–dial setting as the nominal value for steps
4.2.4 and 4.2.6.

4.2.3 Disconnect the TTR from the reference transformer and connect the TTR test leads to the corresponding
TI test leads.

4.2.4 Set the TI ratio selector to 100 and measure this TI ratio (100) with the TTR, operating the TTR as
necessary. Verify that the TTR ratio–dial indication is within (nominal CF) 0.1. Disconnect the TI from the
TTR.

4.2.5 Connect the equipment shown in Figure 1, and set the TI ratio selector for 200. (The reference
transformer should still be set for a turns ratio of 100).

4.2.6 Operate the TTR controls as necessary to measure turns ratio. Verify that the TTR ratio–dial indication at
null is within (nominal CF) 0.2. (Note that the measurement is actually in the magnitude of 200: the nominal
plus the 100 from the reference xfmr, item 2.1, but for simiplicity, its only necessary to verify the TTR indication).

4.2.7 Disconnect the test setup and secure equipment.
