Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on 30O -60O -90O

Right Triangle Theorem!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help
you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.

LESSON
We are done with the first type of special right triangle which is the 45o -
45o - 90o triangle. Now we will have the second type of special right triangle, and
this is the 30o -60o -90o triangle, and discover the relationship between the side
opposite the 30o angle, the side opposite the 60o angle, and side opposite the 90o
angle.

The Relationship among the measurements of each side:

60°
The 30o -60o -90o triangle is based on an 2
2
equilateral triangle with sides of 2 60
units.
60° 60°

The altitude (also the angle bisector

and median) cuts the triangle into two 30° 30°

This creates the 30o -60o -90o triangle 30°

Longer leg
with a hypotenuse, a shorter leg, and a
longer leg.
60°
Shorter leg

We saw that the length of the

hypotenuse is twice the length of the 30° 2
shorter leg. We can use the
Pythagorean theorem to find the longer
60°
leg.
1
Pythagorean Theorem
c2 = a2 + b2
22 = a2 + b2 30° 2
4 = a2 + 1 √𝟑
a2 = 4 - 1
a2 = 3 60°
√𝑎2 = √3 1
a = √3

Conclusion:
The ratio of the sides in a 30° 2
30o -60o -90o right triangle is √𝟑
1: √3: 2. 60°
1

The length of the hypotenuse is twice the length of the shorter leg and the
length of the longer leg is √3 times the length of the shorter leg. The sides lie in
the ratio 1: √3 : 2.

The 30o -60o -90o Special Right Triangle Theorem can be used to find the
length of any side of a right triangle when the length of one side is given and the
angles measures 30° and 60°.

Examples:
1. Find the values of x and y of the given triangle.

Solutions:

4 is the shorter leg (opposite the 30o angle)

y is the longer leg (opposite the 60o angle)

x is the hypotenuse (opposite the 90o angle)

By 30o -60o -90o Right Triangle Theorem
Solving for x.

Hypotenuse is twice the length of the shorter leg.

x = (2)(4)
x = 8 cm

Therefore the length of the hypotenuse is 8 cm.

Solving for y.

The length of the longer leg is √3 times the length of the shorter leg.

y = (√3)(4)
y = 4√3 𝑐𝑚

Therefore, the length of the longer leg is 4√3 cm.

2. Find the values of n and m of the given triangle.

Solutions:

n is the shorter leg (opposite the 30o angle)

2√5 is the longer leg (opposite the 60o angle)

m is the hypotenuse (opposite the 90o angle)

Solving for n: Solving for m:

3. Kevin is bored because of the seemingly never-ending enhanced community
quarantine (ECQ). He decided to fly a kite. The kite string which is 150m long is tied
at the ground and makes 60° angle. He wants to find the vertical distance of the kite
from the ground.

Solution:

Let x be the vertical distance of the kite from the

ground.
We are solving for the longer side, but before that
we must look for the length of the shorter side
first.
The hypotenuse is twice the length of the shorter
side.
150
Shorter side =
2

Shorter side = 75ft.

The longer side is √3 times the length of the

shorter side.

x = (√3 )(75)

x = 75√3 m

Therefore the vertical distance of the kite from the

ground is 75√3 m.

Remember that…

You can only use the 30o -60o -90o Special Right Triangle Theorem if you have
a right triangle, given the length of one side and you are solving for the other two
sides and the angle measures are 30° and 60°.

VALUING

REFLECTION: (Journal Writing)

All of us want to be successful in life. Let us say, that the road to success is in
the form of a 30o -60o -90o triangle. Supposing that the starting point to be successful
is at vertex A. And there are two roads to reach the pinnacle of success (represented
by vertex B). First option is you will tread road AB (which is the hypotenuse). And
the second option is you will tread road AC (the shorter leg) and road CB (the longer
leg). Make an illustration and what option will you choose. Explain your answer.
