Discourse is the extended expression of thoughts or ideas. It is also called Public Speaking.
Brainstorming- techniques in selecting information requires group creativity and effort to find
conclusion for a problem.
Process of Brainstorming
1. Nominal Group Techniques-
2. Team Idea Mapping Method
3. Group Passing Technique
4. Question brainstorming
Nominal Group Techniques- process of brainstorming asks participants to have group votes on
each idea written in a paper.
Question Brainstorming- process of that involves questions and an immediate answer.
Group Passing Technique- ask the participants to pass the paper on the next person after
writing his/her ideas.
Graphic Organizer- techniques in selecting information has the purpose of providing a visual aid
to facilitate learning and instruction.

Venn Diagram- is used for similarities and differences.
Relational Organizer- is use for cause and effect.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A WELL- WRITTEN TEXT


• Completeness
• Unity
• Orderly Movement of Ideas
• Coherence and Cohesion
Completeness- The written text must be able to achieve its purpose.
Unity- A unified paragraph makes clear reading. The discussion of the topic starts with the
beginning sentence and ends with last.
Orderly Movement of Ideas- The Orderly Movement of Ideas refer to the relationship of the
sentences in the paragraph.
Coherence- It is a term used for the quality of being logical, clearly organized, not rumbling or
confusing.
Cohesion- is the connection of the sentences and ideas in your text.
COMPOSING DIFFERENT TYPES OF ESSAYS
• Narration- telling a story
• Description- describing things, events, places and etc.
• Definition- defining a text
• Exemplifications and Clarifications- It makes the meaning more specific by explaining
and clarifying.

LESSON 1. CRITICAL READING AS A WAY OF THINKING
CRITICAL READING- it is an analysis that involves a deeper examination of the claims.
In any type of argumentation, it is always important to know these different types of claims.
TYPES OF CLAIMS
✓ CLAIM OF FACT OR FACT CLAIM
✓ CLAIM OF VALUE OR VALUE CLAIM

CLAIM OF POLICY OR POLICY CLAIM


FACT CLAIM- Asserts the existence of something based on facts and data. It is an
argument about a measurable topic.
Example of fact claim
“According to the Internet world statistics, there are approximately 2, 267, 233, 742
Internet users worldwide in 2012.
CLAIM OF VALUE OR VALUE CLAIM- attempts to prove that there are things that are
more or less valuable and desirable. It is about the moral, aesthetic and philosophical
value.
CLAIM OF POLICY OR POLICY CLAIM- asserts that certain policies must be instituted as
solutions to particular problems. The proposed action must be clear and well- justified.
Examples:
“…in the end, it is still up to us whether to use social media to our advantage or allow
it to destroy us.”
“… Pornography, cyberbullying and other online scams will not affect us if we do not
allow it to enter into our lives…”
OTHER CONTEXTS WHICH TEXT ARE DEVELOPED
A. Intertextuality as a Literary Device
• Intertext- It is the shaping of a text’s meaning by another text, thus, creating
new meaning, influence and interpretation.
• Hypertext- Is a non- linear way to present information and is usually
accomplished by using links.
• Hypermedia- links are not just limited by text or documents but may also
incorporate other forms of multimedia such as pictures, sounds, and videos
that could stimulate more senses.
