Definition of Terms
Parabola – The graph of a quadratic function. It is a “U” or “∩” shaped curve that may open up or
down depending on the sign of a coefficient a.
Concavity or opening – It tells the direction of a parabola as upward or downward.
Axis of Symmetry or line of symmetry – it is a vertical line that divides the parabola into two
equal regions. Its equation is x = h since it passes through the x – axis at a value of h in the
vertex.
Vertex – it is the turning point of the graph, It is an ordered of pair with coordinates (h,k). It is
called a lowest point if the graph opens upward of highest point if the graph opens downward.
Minimum or Maximum Value – it is the value of k in the vertex.
Domain – it is the set of all possible values of x in the function.
Range – It is the sent of all possible values of y in the function.
x-intercept – It is the value of x when y = 0. It is also called the zeroes of the function.
y-intercept – it si value of y or f(x) when x = 0.
The parabola will open upward if the coefficient of quadratic term is positive.
The parabola will open downward if the coefficient of quadratic term is negative.
Finding the Vertex
Step 2: Substitute the x-value into the original equation to find y-coordinate of the vertex.
x-intercept (point that the graph intersect the x-axis)
Let y be equal to 0
Let x be equal to 0
