GRAPHS OF RATIONAL

FUNCTIONS
Target Skills Determinet the domain of rational functions
Identify vertical or horizontal asymptotes
Graphs rational functions.
• We Grade 10 that rational functions are qoutients of polynomial functions
and can be expressed as.
f(x)= p(x)
q(x)
Where p(x) and q(x) are polynomials functions and q(x)=0. The domain of a
rational function is the set of all numbers except the x-values that makes
denominator zero. For example the domian of the rational function.

f(x)= x²+7x+9
This is p(x)
x(x-2)(x+5
This is q(x)
is the set of all numbers, except 0,2 and -5
EXAMPLE 1

a.The domain of R(x)=2x²-4 is the set of all real numbers x

except -5, that is {x|x=-5}. x+5

b. The domian of R(x)= 1 is the set of all real numbersx

except-2 and 2, that is {x|x=-2,x=2}.x²-4

c.The domian of R(x)= x² is the set of all real numbers.

x²+1

d. the domain of R(x)=-x²-2 is the set of all real numbers.

Step 1:
identify vertical asymptotes
(find the zeros of the
denominator)
Step 2:
Check the horizontal
asymptotes
(compare degree of top and
bottom)
Step 3:
plot points strategically
(including intercepts)

• Graphs into hyperbolas
• Vertical asymptote occurs at the x-values that makes the
denominator=0
• Horizontal asymptote occurs at the line y= a

RATIONAL FUNCTIONS
A rational
A rational function is of the form
function is a
f(x)= p(x) = a polynomial
function that is a
q(x) a polynomial
fraction and has
the properly that

both its
example:
numerator and
f(x)= 3x+1
denominator are
2x+3
polynomials.
How to solve Rational Equation?
1.Factor all the denominator.
2.Find the least command
denominator (LCD).
3.Multiply each side of the
equation by the LCD to cancel
out the denominator.
4.slove the equation.
5.Check solution(s).Reject
solution that makes the
denominator=0.
VERTICAL ASYMPOTES

• Look at the graphs of

• f(x)= 1 as
• x-3

• in Figure 2.10. let us

explore what happens
as x-values get closer
and closer to 3 from
the left. We then what
happens as x- values
get closer and closer
to 3 from the right.

Vertical asymptotes
BOX
For a rational function f(x)=p(x), where
p(x)
q(x)
and q(x), are polynomials with no common
factors other than constants, if a is a zero
of the denominator, then the line y=a is
vertical asymptote for the graph of
function
Example:
a. P(x)= x b. Q(x)=x-5
x²-9 x+2

c.H(x) = x² d.G(x)=x²-9
x²+1 x²+4x-21
Horizontal
asymptotes

Looking again at the graph of

f(x)=1, shown at the right (Figure
2.12)
(x-3)
f(x)= 1 , as x increase without
(x-3) bound
(appraches positive infinity,. )
and as x decrease without
bound
(approaches negative infinity
-. ).
Examlpe:
1.

y=3x²+2x-4.1 x²= 3+x

2 _4

2x²-x +1 1 2- 1
+1
x² x x²
