We must be able to solve problems involving
conversion of units of time.
• The second is the basic unit for time measurement.
• A year is the time it takes for the earth to travel
once around the sun.
The following conversions are useful when
working with time:
1 minute (min) = 60 seconds (sec) 1 year (yr) = 12 months
= 52 weeks
1 hour (hr) = 60 minutes = 365 days or 366 days
= 3,600 seconds (for leap years)

b) Pigeon: 18 days x

= 432 hours
Have you ever wondered why we have leap years?
𝟏
A year is actually 365 days. In practice, however, for every four
𝟒
years, the three years will have 365 days. The fourth year is called
a “leap year” and it has 366 days to make up for the extra quarter
day over four years. In a leap year, the month of February has 29
days instead of 28.
