We must be able to solve problems involving
conversion of units of time.
• The second is the basic unit for time measurement.
• A year is the time it takes for the earth to travel
once around the sun.
The following conversions are useful when
working with time:
1 minute (min) = 60 seconds (sec) 1 year (yr) = 12 months
= 52 weeks
1 hour (hr) = 60 minutes = 365 days or 366 days
= 3,600 seconds (for leap years)

1 day = 24 hours 1 decade = 10 years

= 86,400 seconds
1 score = 20 years
1 week (wk) = 7 days
1 century = 100 years
1 month = 30 days
= 4 weeks 1 millennium = 1,000 years
Convert the measurement to the indicated unit.
1) 85 min = ______ sec
𝟔𝟎 𝒔𝒆𝒄
85 min x 𝟏 𝒎𝒊𝒏 = 5,100 sec

2) 2 hr 45 min = _____ min

𝟔𝟎 𝒎𝒊𝒏
2hr x = 120 min
𝟏 𝒉𝒓
120 + 45 = 165 min

3) 39 days = _____ weeks

𝟏 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌
39 days x 𝟕 𝒅𝒂𝒚𝒔 = 5.57 weeks or 5 weeks and 4 days
The incubation time of some animals are given below. Convert the
indicated incubation time to hours.

a. Chicken (21 days)

b. Pigeon (18 days)

𝟐𝟒 𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒓
a) Chicken: 21 days x 𝟏 𝒅𝒂𝒚
= 504 hours.
𝟐𝟒 𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒓
b) Pigeon: 18 days x
𝟏 𝒅𝒂𝒚
= 432 hours
Have you ever wondered why we have leap years?

𝟏
A year is actually 365 days. In practice, however, for every four
𝟒
years, the three years will have 365 days. The fourth year is called
a “leap year” and it has 366 days to make up for the extra quarter
day over four years. In a leap year, the month of February has 29
days instead of 28.
