The Environmental Health Effects of Plastic Wastes Disposal

Review of Related Literature

Health Effects of Plastic Waste

Health effects of these actions this article examines the environmental and health effects of
poor plastic of reducing plastic waste quantities, which will downplay their impact on human and
animals (Deniran & Shakantu, 2022). Asides that, due to its resistance to degradation, most plastic
debris will persist in the environment for centuries and may be transported far from its source,
including great distances out to sea (LI et al., 2016).

Plastic Waste Environment Effects

Plastics should remain in the top of the political agenda in Europe and across the world,
not only to minimize plastic leakage and pollution, but to promote sustainable growth and to
stimulate both green and blue- economies. Discussions on this topic, particularly considering the
excessive use of plastic, should start soon with the involvement of the scientific community, plastic
producers and politicians in order to be prepared for the near future (Patrício Silva et al., 2021). As
result of papers that reported environmental and public health effects of plastic constituents but not
plastics directly were also reviewed. Varieties of plastics used in the production of many
consumable products including medical devices, food packaging and water bottles contain toxic
chemicals like phthalates, heavy metals, biphenyl, brominated, phenanthren, etc. (Alabi et al.,
2019).

Effects Plastic Waste to Animals

The generation of plastic waste, we designed and tested several behavioral interventions
in a randomized control trial to reduce plastic waste in a high rise office building. We found that
the signage with the animal reduced plastic waste by 17%, the largest effect among the other
conditions. After implementing the signage to the entire building, we found an overall reduction in
plastic waste over 6weeks (Lou et al., 2022). In fact, every year the plastic litter enters the marine
environments at an alarming rate. Marine animals ingest plastic waste as a food and leads to
chocking of their stomach followed by death. In some cases, marine animals get entangled with the
plastic waste, and due to scarcity of food, these animals also get killed (Dar et al., 2022).

Recycling of Plastics
Major greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to plastic waste recycling were evaluated
with respect to three management alternatives: recycling of clean, single-type plastic, recycling of
mixed/contaminated plastic, and use of plastic waste as fuel in industrial processes (Astrup et al.,
2009). In fact, the results demonstrate that recycle and reuse strategies for plastic-based products
can yield significant environmental benefits. Therefore, the study was to use a life-cycle assessment
approach to determine whether a recycle and reuse strategy for plastics-based packaging system
that substantially reduces the quantity of waste to landfill would also reduce its overall
environmental burden. Several important observations can now be made (Ross & Evans., 2003).

Toxic Pollution to Environment of plastic waste

The study demonstrated the export of toxic chemicals from developed to developing
countries, through uncontrolled recycling of e-waste in the receiving countries (Wong et al., 2007)
. Maybe the toxic substances thus released are posing a threat to vegetation, human and animal
health and environment as a whole. And aside that Incineration of plastic waste in an open field is
a major source of air pollution. Most of the times, the Municipal Solid waste containing about 12%
of plastics is burnt, releasing toxic gases like Dioxins, Furans, Mercury and Polychlorinated
Biphenyls into the atmosphere. Further, burning of Poly Vinyl Chloride liberates hazardous
halogens and pollutes air, the impact of which is climate change (Verma et al., 2016).
