    Beginnings
    -first hip hop party held by DJ Kool Herc (1520 Sedgwick Ave) August 11, 1973
    -break dancers are called that because they danced to break beats
    -first party rocker was Coke La Rock
    -early important DJ was Afrika Bambaataa (Bronx)
    -black spades biggest gang in Bronx (afrika bambaataa part of this)
    -street gangs big part of culture (nation of Islam, black panthers, young lords

    -Zulu nation melting pot of gang members
    -grandmaster flash, south side bronx, big part of DJ scratching

    -poetry rap: the last poets, watts prophets, Sonia Sanchez, Wanda Robinson 
    -one of the first rappers was DJ Hollywood (considered by a lot to be a disco dj,
    not a part of rap at all)

    Transition into the mainstream


    -72/73-1979
    -blackouts provided the opportunity to steal mixers and turntables for aspiring
    DJ's 
    -battles between groups were had. Furious 5 top
    -battle at Harlem world between fantastic 5 and cold crush. Fantastic 5 won.
    Bootleg tapes spread of cold crush, became very well known. 
    -cold crush very important
    -recording was not a big part of the scene until 79
    -Sylvia Robinson (1936-2011). Started as a teenage singer named little Sylvia.
    Formed a group with her guitar teacher Mickey baker, had a hit called "love is
    strange". Founded a label called all platinum records, was in financial trouble in the
    70's. Had her son find her rappers to record. 
    -sugar hill gang born out of a meeting between Sylvia and the members of sugar
    hill gang. Met outside of big hanks pizza shop at 2 am that he worked at. 
    -sugarhill gang exploded in 79. First big rap group. "Rappers delight" first big hip
    hop hit. 
    -hip hop community didn't respond well. Hated it. 
    -stealing rhymes is not tolerated. 
    -became cliched, was thought to be a novelty
    -Afrika brought hip hop down to manhatten from the Bronx 
    -new wave/punk rocker clubs were the only ones who would let hip hop be played
    at the time
    -Michael holmen and lady blue were club owners who promoted them
    -grandmaster flash wrote with blondie
    -planet rock, record by afrika, started electrofunk. First hit record to use an 808
    -Kraftwerk: numbers, trans Europe express, super sperm, important records
    -the message, by grandmaster flash and the furious 5, inspired by Stevie wonder,
    "a boy in Mississippi". About the conditions of the Bronx. First serious song. 
    -style during this time was flamboyant, wild style.

    Golden Age
    -80's
    -Russell Simmons, founder of def jam. was a promoter for parties. 
    -christmas rap made by kurtis blow and russell. frankie crocker first played it. 
    -kurtis blow the first solo mc of the recording era
    -russell helped form run-dmc. 
    -run dmc didn't dress flashy (or ehat was considered flashy at the time). wore
    sneakers, adidas jackets. just wore what they always wore. 
    -got a deal through adidas from the song 'my adidas', and performing it at
    madison square garden. 
    -first athletic company to endorse a non athletic brand. 
    -rick rubin made a record called "its yours" with jazzy jay and t la rock (put his
    number on the bottom of the lp, was his dorm room number) 
    -rubin was a member of the beastie boys (he was dj double r)
    -created def jam along with russell. created the logo for def jam. 
    -rubin brought in the demo for ll cool j (i need a beat)
    -first def jam artists were ll cool j, slick rick, beastie boys
    -white boys into alternative music is what drove it to its success (from russell).
    -'walk this way' crossed rap into the mainstream. run dmc initially didnt want to do
    it, russell pushed hard for it. 
    -run dmc first rap group to break a lot of barriers. 
    -marley mar started drum sampling. revolutionized the sound of the records being
    made. 
    -big daddy kane, started as a battle rapper, hugely influential
    -rakim, rival of big daddy kane, made the sound of hip hop today. influenced by
    coltrane, played sax. introduced flow to the genre. 
    -around this time is when the social consciousness aspect started to come into
    play in the music. rakim and other rappers of his generatoin represented this. 
    -public enemy first played by wbau, delphi univesity. chuck d was a dj on the
    station. flavor flav and chuck d recorded a freestyle rap called "public enemy
    number one". rubin heard it. tried to get chuck d, d didn't want to, wanted to
    create real change. idea of public enemy came out of the thought of combining
    elemtns of the clash and run dmc. public enemy represented a resistance.

    The Rise of Gangsta Rap


    -started in la (although schoollyy d was the first gangsta rapper). parties in rolling
    skating rinks, etc. 
    -uncle jams army biggest promoter
    -world class wrecking cru had dr dre, lonzo williams
    -scene originally had more in common with prince and funkadelic (lot of techno)
    -ice t brought la rap to the map. inspired by schoolly d d, "parkside killers". was in
    the crips. was a gang affiliate, not initiated in it. wanted to document the gang life. 
    -ice t's first big song was "6 in the morning"
    -schoollyy d was the original gangsta rapper. philly. "psk" big song. inspired by
    richard pryor, redd fox, wild man steve.
    -drugs a big part of the culture. Very dangerous in la during this time. 
    -nwa came from the combo of wrecking cru and Arabian prince hanging out,
    talked to eazy e who had money to fund it. Nwa means 'niggas with attitudes'. 
    -nwa blew up with 'boyz-in-da-hood'. Written by ice cube in 11th grade. 
    -straight outta Compton was the next big song. 
    -started tipper gore and the parental advisory labels. 
    -'fuck tha police' next big song. Inspiration came from dr dre being arrested
    regularly. Written by ice cube. About his frustrations with regular people being
    blamed for others actions. 
    -show in Detroit, were told they couldn't play fuck tha police. Police stormed the
    stage. 
    -la rebellion changed hip hop. 
    -dr dre recorded the chronic (name for orange bud). Next great hip hop album.
    First time samples weren't used heavily. Melodies big part of it. Mainstream
    accepted hip hop with this record.
