1. GENERAL.

Nose wheel steering is provided by a servomechanism, electrically controlled The green pressure supplies the steering servovalve when :
from the cockpit via the BSCU.
- The aircraft speed is below 100 kts,
An internal cam mechanism returns the nose wheel to the centered position - One engine is running,
after take off. - The towing lever is in normal position,
- The shock absorbers are compressed.
Control.
Steering is controlled by the two handwheels and the rudder pedals. NOTE : Steering is lost after gear gravity extension as the doors remain open.
Signals are algebraically added if the controls are operated simultaneously.
Maximum nose wheel steering angle is : Principle.
The BSCU controls and monitors the operation of the steering system.

The resulting signal is algebraically added to the handwheel signals.
These inputs can give a maximum of 6° of steering angle.

2.1. Max Steering Angles.

Landing.
From touch down to 100 kts there is 0° of steering movement each side of
the aircraft centerline.
From 100 to 40 kts it increases in proportion up to 6° maximum at 40 kts
each side of the centerline.
From 40 down to 0 kts the steering movement remains at 6° maximum each
side of the aircraft centerline.

Take-off.
From 0 to 100 kts steering inputs can give a maximum of 6° of steering
movement each side of the aircraft centerline.
When the ground speed is more than 100 kts the steering movement de-
creases to 0 in proportion to the increase speed of the aircraft up to150 kts.
Control of the steering system is automatically cancelled when the MLGs and
the NLG shock absobers are not compressed.

The steering inputs are sent to the BSCU. The BSCU uses the inputs to calcu-
late the necessary steering angle, rate of movement and the direction of the
turn. The BSCU then supplies the control currents to operate the electrohy-
draulic valves in the system. The BSCU also :

- Monitors the steering movement,

- Monitors the system for failures and defects,
- Does an in-flight test of the system before each landing,
- Isolates the system if certain failures occur.

3.1. Hydraulic Operation. A Linear Variable Differential Transducer (LVDT) sends the data to the moni-
tor channel of the BSCU providing the correct position of the servovalve.
When all conditions are available, the Green Hydraulic Pressure is applied to
the system through the swivel selector valve. The supply pressure is routed to the correct end of each steering actuator
through the refilling valve, one anti-shimmy valve and the rotating selector
The swivel selector valve isolates the Green Hydraulic Pressure from the sys- valves.
tem and connects it to the green return lines, when the nose landing gear is
retracted. The refilling valve prevents cavitation of the steering actuator.

Pressure is sent to the shut-off valve through the check valve. The anti-shimmy valve controls the flow of Hydraulic Fluid through each line
and modulates the return flow.
The check valve helps the pressure maintaining valve to keep a pressure in
the system when the Hydraulic power is not available. The rotating selector valves send the Hydraulic Pressure to the necessary end
of the actuator.
The BSCU energizes the selector valve which releases the control pressure at
the shut-off valve. The Rotary Variable Differential Transducer (RVDT) monitors the correct angu-
When the selector valve is de-energized, the control pressure is held at the lar position of the nose wheels sending data to the command and monitor
shut-off valve and the supply line is connected to return. channels of the BSCU.

The selector valve connects the supply line to the return line when the pres-
sure in the supply line is more than 350 bars (5076 psi).

When the shut-off valve opens a control pressure goes through to the by-
pass valve, that operates to isolate the steering actuator service lines from
each other.

The servovalve supplies the Hydraulic Pressure to the steering actuator in pro-
portion to an electrical signal from the Braking and Steering Control Unit.

4.2. Component Description.

Braking And Steering Control Unit (BSCU).

The steering function is controlled by the BSCU which controls the steering
position via an electrically signalled servovalve in response to electrical signals
from the steering angle inputs.

System 1 and 2 have independent power supplies.

Each system is divided into two channels, a monitoring channel and a com-
mand channel.

The command channel calculates- and generates the command signals while
the monitoring channel checks if the command channel is operating correctly.

If the two systems are supplied simultaneously the system 1 has priority and
system 2 is in standby.

In order to maintain maximum steering system availability, the BSCU and

most of its electrical peripheries are duplicated and segregated into system 1
and system 2.

The two systems switch over automatically at each landing gear extension cy-
cle or in case of sequencing system failure.

Inputs.
The BSCU receives different signals for the Nose Wheel Steering System Con-
trol.
These signals are in discrete, analog or ARINC form.

or 60° (post SB)).
When the ground speed of the aircraft is more than 10 knots the angle of
steering available decreases.
This decrease continues in proportion to the Steering- Demand/Aircraft Speed
Law programmed in the BSCU.

Handwheels are connected by a gear to two pairs of potentiometers. Move-

ment of the handwheels is transmitted through gears to the potentiometers
which signal the control data to the BSCU.
Two potentiometers are used for the control channels and two are used for
the monitor channels in the BSCU.

Pushbutton.
Each hand wheel includes a pushbutton that isolates the system from the
steering inputs that come from the rudder pedals.
This prevents steering movement during the pre flight rudder check when the
aircraft is stationary, which decreases NLG stresses and prevents tire wear.
The pushbutton can also be used during a Landing if necessary.

5. STEERING ANGLE PROTECTION (IF INSTALLED).

5.1. General.

The towing warning is triggered by the towing limit sensors which energize,
through the oversteer warning electric box, the pushbutton switch located in
the cockpit.

The pushbutton switch is fitted with a guard which is sealed by a sealed lock-
wire to prevent an unauthorized reset of the system.
When the towing angle limits are exceeded, you have to :

- Reset the system (the pushbutton switch must be pushed in),

- Do the inspection/check required in the documentation.

Electric Box, NLG Oversteer Warning,

The Electric box, NLG oversteer warning is an enclosure which gives an inter-
face between the aircraft and tractor power supplies through a changeover
relay. A red warning light and a related press-to-test button are installed on
the top of the box.

Proximity Sensor, NLG Oversteer Warning,

The proximity sensor is a hermetically sealed electronic switch. The switch op-
erates when the active surface detects a target within given distances.
Two adjustment rings let the switch to target distance be set. An electrical
connection at one end connects the switch to the aircraft circuit

These are :

- Servovalve data,
- Pin programming data,
- Steering data,
- System data.

The first page shows the calibration data for each of the servovalves in the
Normal braking system.
It does this when the normal brake test is complete.
The data shows the relation between the electrical power input and the hy-

The second page shows the pin program data for the brake type which is in-

The third page shows the servo current, the command angle, the RVDT (com-
