PROBLEM SET 1

1 hr. and 30 mins.

1. A pump is lifting water through 5.5m to fill 570m^3 tank. The overall efficiency is 85%.
Calculate the length of time if the pump rated power is 7.5kw.

2. An electric heater is to heat 11kg of oil per min from 4.5C to 65.5C. Specific heat of the
oil is 2.1 J/g per C. What should be the rating of the heater? How much energy will
consume if it will use for 360secs?

3. In a change-over steam to electric heating, a unit which had been considering 4.5kg dry
and saturated steam at 2.1 kg/cm^2 each at 15 min is to be electrically heated from
220V circuit. How many 12ohms resistors in parallel would be needed to supply the
same heat?

4. Calculate the rated water horsepower in metric is required to raise 1900 l/min through a
height of 38m?

5. Water is being heated in a closed pan on top of a range while being stirred by a paddle
wheel. During the process, 30kJ of heat is transferred to the water and 5kJ of heat is lost
to the surrounding air. The paddle wheel work amounts to 500N-m. Determine the final
energy of the system if its initial energy is 10kJ.

6. A vertical piston cylinder device contains water and is being heated on top of a range.
During the process, 65 BTU of heat is transferred to the water, and heat losses from the
side walls amount to 8BTU. The piston rises as a result of evaporation and 5BTU of
work is done by the vapor. Determine the change of energy of the water for this
process?

7. The input work to a paddle wheel used to stir a bowl of water is 6000kJ. At the same
time, 2400kJ of heat is being rejected by the bowl. Calculate the change of internal
energy.

8. A blower handles 1kg/s of air at 20C and consumes a power of 15kW. The inlet and
outlet velocities of air are 100m/s and 150 m/s respectively. Find the exit air
temperature, assuming mass is constant and heat is constant. Specific heat due to
constant pressure is 1.005 kj/ kg-K.

9. A turbine operates under steady flow conditions, receiving steam at the following state:
pressure 1.2MPa; temperature 188C; enthalpy 2785 kj/kg; velocity 33.3 m/s and
elevation of 3m. The steam leaves the turbine at the following state: Pressure 20kPa;
enthalpy 2512 kj/kg; velocity 100m/s; and elevation of 0m. heat is lost to the
surroundings at the rate of 0.29 kj/kg. if the rate of steam flow through the turbine is 0.42
kg/s. Calculate the power output of the turbine in kw.

10. Prove that 1kw = 14. 33 kcal/min or 860 kcal/hr
