INTRODUCTION
THE PROBLEM
Difficulty in choosing a school and/or degree for engineering can be a major challenge
for aspiring engineers. The wide range of schools and degree programs available can be
overwhelming, making it difficult for students to decide which one is right for them. Some
students may not have a clear idea of what they want to study and may be only forced to
pick based on their family’s interest, while others may be unsure which specific engineering
discipline is best suited to their interests and abilities and lead to a great deal of stress and
indecision, as students try to navigate the many options available to them.
Another related issue is when students cannot decide what engineering degree to take
to match their potentials, skills, and interests. This can be particularly frustrating for students
who have a strong desire to pursue a career in engineering, but are unsure which area of
specialization would be the best fit for them. Without a clear understanding of their own
strengths and interests, it can be difficult for students to make informed decisions about their
future.
A lack of guidance as to what each engineering degree can offer can exacerbate this
problem. While some schools may provide general information about different engineering
disciplines, students may not have a comprehensive understanding of the curricular and non-
curricular activities associated with each degree which will make it difficult for students to
fully understand what they will be studying, what opportunities will be available to them, and
what their future career prospects might look like.
Finally, students may also be concerned about the employability of the engineering
course/degree they choose as so many different engineering disciplines are available, some
students may worry that they will choose a degree that will not lead to a fulfilling career.
Others may be concerned about the competitiveness of the job market, and whether they will
be able to secure a job after graduation which can further complicate the process of choosing
an engineering degree and make it even more challenging for students to find a path that is
right for them.
THE SOLUTION
Computer engineering, electrical engineering, and chemical engineering are all distinct
fields of study that focus on different aspects of engineering. Computer engineering involves
the design and development of computer hardware and software, as well as computer systems
and networks. Electrical engineering, on the other hand, deals with the study and application
of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism and involves designing and developing of
electrical systems and devices, such as generators, motors, and circuits. Chemical
engineering, meanwhile, focuses on the design and development of chemical processes and
products, including the production of fuels, pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals. Overall,
these three diverse fields are crucial to modern society, which involves applying scientific and
mathematical principles to design, build, and maintain complex systems and structures in
which advancements have led to many technological breakthroughs and improvements in our
daily lives.
To develop skills and prepare for a career in engineering, students will typically engage
in a variety of activities both in and out of the classroom. In the classroom, they will study
core engineering concepts and work on projects and assignments that challenge them to think
creatively and apply what they've learned to real-world problems, this also includes peer-
review session which boosts socializing and collaborative learning. Outside the classroom,
students may participate in internships, co-op programs, or research projects, gaining hands-
on experience and working alongside experienced engineers.
CONCLUSION
Enrolling in computer, electrical, and chemical engineering courses can offer students
the opportunity to explore cutting-edge technologies, design innovative new products and
systems, and develop new materials and processes. These dynamic and rapidly evolving fields
offer a wealth of opportunities for students to apply their skills and knowledge, and to make
a real impact in the world around them. By pursuing these courses, students can position
themselves for a rewarding and exciting career in the tech and engineering industries.
