Field Observation Journal
This is the third field observation I have participated in and each time I have experienced
something different. For this time around I wanted to strictly stay with one teacher and really
understand how she deals with each class as the day goes on. I observed Mrs. Phelps junior
world history classes at Kent Island High School. The first thing I want to speak about is the
differences between her classes. While they are all the same class, being taught the same
material, as the day progresses I noticed the clear change in how she handles her classes. The
first period class was very calm and quiet. They seemed ready to learn or at least too tired to
say anything otherwise. They were patient and other than maybe one or two otherliers there
were really no difficulties in the classroom. Everyone was respectful and did their work. This
was entirely different when it came to her fourth period class. They were obviously done with the
day and ready to go home. It was difficult to keep their attention and even more difficult to get
them to quietly work individually on their assignments. Obviously observing a classroom right
before a major holiday and break from school is going to be interesting. The students were
simply ready to be done with school for a little bit. I think my cooperating teacher handled it well
though, she made it clear that she wouldn't tolerate people being disrespectful but still allowed
them to have fun and show their excitement for break. One of the major things I noticed about
my teacher is that she clearly has formed a very strong personal bond with her students. They
all really seem to care about her and respect her. They were very concerned when she was out
sick for a day. I found it to be really heartwarming that she was able to create such an amazing
environment within her classroom over such a short period of time. The teacher also has really
good classroom management. There are clear rules that need to be followed but there's also a
level of leniency that allows for the students to prove themselves to her and gain more
responsibilities. She has a snack box that the students are allowed to go to whenever they like,
and she also has a variety of fidgets for them if they need. I noticed several times that the
students felt comfortable sharing personal things with their teacher and even explaining why
they were having a bad day. I was overall really impressed with the level of care Mrs.Phelps has
put into her classroom. Mrs. Phelps teaching during the days I was there was somewhat
underwhelming to observe simply because it was mostly lecture style and note taking. However
the students seemed to enjoy it and were able to participate in learning tasks and exit tickets
effectively, so it seems she knows what her students like. She also allowed them to participate
in games like Kahoot that the students really enjoyed and were able to show their knowledge
through. I was surprised with the level of diversity in her classrooms. When I went to Kent Island
the school was a high majority of white students and very few minorities. However I was really
glad to see a major shift in this. There were many students of color in her classroom. She also
explained to me there was a student with autism in her class that was able to fully function
within a standard classroom setting. Overall I found the entire experience to be incredibly
