The key takeaways are the principles of Kenpo and an overview of several katas including Short #1, Long #1, and Short #2.

The principles of Kenpo include using solid bases, deleting extra motion, combining power principles like torque and backup mass, and incorporating sequences of inward, outward, upward and downward movements.

Short #1 kata demonstrates the basic movements while Long #1 adds blocks and shows completing sequences. Long #1 also points to different angles and introduces new material after sequences.

Do you really know Kenpo Principles?...

Here they are!

SHORT #1 KATA
"Retreating with Front Hand Block"

 Walking neutral stance

 Blocking with stance
 Four 90 degree angles "the walls"
 Rotation and counter-rotation
 Delete extra motion
 Use solid base

LONG #1 KATA
"Short #1 With Added Movement & Showing Sequence Completion"

 Front hand by itself uses neutral

 Rear hand by itself uses forward
 Walking from forward to neutral
 Stop Cat & show as transition stance with extra block
 Inward block is only single block - closes center line
 Rear heel is always down for beginners
 Out/up transition uses elbow, back fist, upward block as strike setting line of travel
 Different step on first downward block in the #1 & #2 Katas
 Use 'V' or "L" step moving into and opponent
 Closes center line and allows choice of angle of entry with use of Cat stance
 All Katas Based On Inward, Outward, Upward, Downward Sequence as well as the Four 90
(later the four 45) degree angles
 After any sequence is completed, something new is added
 Second half of Long #1 Kata is the left handed side of Short #1 Kata with added blocks
 When blocking with rear hand, you need not pivot to a forward bow since reach is not
necessary for block - upper body turns 45 degrees
 At end of second in, out, up, down sequence, add new material by moving toward (“L step”)
 An isolation square horse stance and introducing new material; palm down inside downward
block, palm up inside downward block (requires setting of line of travel); and push-down
block
 45-degree angle punches point to the corners for the first time and say look for these angles
in future katas
 End with two uppercut punches (relating to the two downward push-down blocks)

SHORT #2 KATA
"Advancing with Front Hand Block"

ADVANCE WITH INWARD BLOCK AND COVER

 Never move in without a cover
 The completion of the inward block is the cock for the handsword - it sets line of travel for
handsword
 Never make a cock a separate move
OUTWARD BLOCK WITH PUNCH
 All cats with center line to 12 o'clock to define other angles
 In general, when you cat you cock
 Combines the power principles torque with back up mass

UPWARD BLOCK WITH DOWNWARD KNUCKLE RAKE

 Combines the power principle of torque with marriage of gravity - which is sister to previous
principle
 'V' step is the reverse or back side of a Cat Stance (a type of “reverse” cat stance)
 "When you cat you cock" doesn't apply on the vertical line
 Uses figure "8" pattern on a vertical plane as you transition into the second side (RNB 12)

DOWNWARD BLOCK AND STEP THRU PALM STRIKE

 Separates the power principles of torque and back up mass Shows first corner and points to
it from Cat Stance (the left foot faces 4:30 in the cat stance)
 Points to back corners while Long #1 pointed to front corners

WHEN IN-OUT-UP-DOWN SEQUENCE IS COMPLETED, SOMETHING NEW IS ADDED

 First time a 180-degree change of angle is done using other than a cover with rear leg and
an upward block
 Here covering movement is done with an inward block /Cat Stance and punch does not
chamber to waist
 Extended outward block is the block for actual application (not the outward block)
 Half fist is new weapon
 Blocking hand does not return to waist and becomes the first check
 Cat Stance and Forward Bow Stance are used as transition positions and show Neutral Bow
Stance as only static stance
 Uses figure "8" pattern on a horizontal plane as you transition into the second side (10:30)

LONG #2 KATA
"Short #2 With Added Movement & Showing Opposites and Timing”

ADVANCE WITH INWARD BLOCK WITHOUT COVER

 Teaches full range of motion by cocking hand to waist and overriding the principle "when
you step in and block you cover with the other hand"

VERTICAL OUTWARD WITH PUNCH

 Teaches full range of motion by cocking hand to waist and chambering
 First vertical side fist from front hand in straight, straight, vertical sequence
 First combination leg/hand strike - timing is 2-1-1-2

UNIVERSAL BLOCK
 Altering of in, out, up, down sequence with introduction of universal block
 First orbital switch, first eye claw
 Timing is one beat for each two moves 2-2-2-2

DOWNWARD BLOCK
 Starts corners with downward block and back knuckle strike as one count
 Shows first side of circle on a vertical plane
 Teaches simultaneous kicking and punching while transitioning along the diagonal line
(4:30)
 Shows side fist as low punch with leg check
 Repeats straight, straight, vertical sequence - timing is 2-1-2-2

LEG CHECK WITH CHOPPING KNUCKLE RAKE

 Finishes block/strike sequence with a Strike preceding a Block
 Upward forearm strike shows path of action
 First eye spear in kata - timing is 2-2-1-2

Short #2 Kata Sequence is finished

PALM UP INSIDE DOWNWARD BLOCK AND VERTICAL PUNCH

 Shows distance and then torque

PALM DOWN INSIDE DOWNWARD BLOCK AND INVERTED PUNCH

 Shows second side of circle on vertical plane
 When a move is compounded only one stance movement is necessary

PUSH-DOWN BLOCK IN FORWARD BOW, ROTATING TWIST INTO FORWARD TWIST-

THRU WITH OUTWARD OVERHEAD ELBOW
 Shows torque and then distance with one half of overhead circle

REVERSE TWIST-THRU WITH INWARD OVERHEAD ELBOW

 Shows reverse of last set with second half of overhead circle

TRANSITION TO HORSE WITH DOUBLE IN (OPEN-HAND & ELBOW) & DOUBLE OUT
(ELBOWS)
 Introduction of a horizontal sandwich strike (heel-palm with elbow)

ONE DUEL MOVEMENT IN ISOLATION SET

 Simultaneous left upward elbow and right back elbow
