Types of DC Generators

1. Separately Excited Generators are those generators whose field magnets are energized from an
independent external source of DC current.
2. Self Excited Generators are those generators whose field magnets are energized by the current
produced by the generator themselves.
These generators can be divided in accordance with how the field winding is connected into
generators as follows:
• Shunt wound generators
• Series Wound Generators
• Compound Wound Generators
❖ Short Shunt
❖ Long Shunt
Separately Excited Generator
The field winding of the generator is excited or supplied from a separate or external
dc source like a battery or another dc generator.

E=𝑉𝐿 + 𝐼𝑎𝑅𝑎
Series Generator
The field windings are connected in series with the armature windings

Ia=Ise=𝐼𝐿 =I

E=𝑉𝐿 +Ia(Ra+Rse)
DC Shunt Generator
The field windings are connected across the armature windings.

Ish=𝑉𝐿 /Rsh

Ia= 𝐼𝐿 +Ish

E= 𝑉𝐿 +IaRa
DC Long Shunt Generator
This generator is a combination of the shunt and series generators.The series field
winding is connected in series with the armature winding.

Ish= V/Rsh

Ia= 𝐼𝐿 +Ish

E= 𝑉𝐿 +Ia(Ra+Rse)
DC Short Shunt Generator
This generator is a combination of the shunt and series generators. The series field
winding is connected in series with the load.
Ish= Vsh/Rsh

Ia= 𝐼𝐿 +Ish

Vsh= 𝑉𝐿 + 𝐼𝐿 𝑅𝑠𝑒

E=Vsh+(Ra+Rse)
A series generator has an armature resistance of 0.1 ohms and a
series field resistance of 0.05 ohms. Find the generated emf when
delivering 10kW at 110V. Assume a total brush drop of 2V.
A 25kW series generator has an efficiency of 85% when operating a
rated load. Find the total power loss.
A dc shunt generator is supplying 1.8kW to a load at 200V. The
armature field resistances are 0.4 and 200 ohms. Find the generated
emf.
A 200kW, 200V dc shunt generator has a brush resistance of 0.005
ohms, an armature resistance of 0.065 ohms and shunt field
resistance of 200 ohms. Find the power developed in the armature if
it delivers its rated load.
A dc shunt generator has a generated emf at no load of 125V. The
armature and field resistances are 0.02 ohms and 15 ohms
respectively. When the generator is carrying a load, the terminal
voltage drops to 120V. Find the load current.
A dc shunt generator delivers 20kW at 200V. The armature and shunt
field resistances are 0.05 ohms and 50 ohms respectively. If the stray
power losses are equal to the copper loss at this load, find the
efficiency.
A 5kW, 120V dc long-shunt compound generator has an armature,
series field, and shunt field resistances of 0.23 ohms, 0.04 ohms, and
57.5 ohms. If the voltage drop at the brushes is 2V,find the induced
emf at rated load.
A dc short-shunt compound generator has an armature series field
and shunt fields resistances of 0.025, 0.008, and 77 ohms. When the
armature current is 128A and induced emf is 234.2V, find the
terminal voltage.
Parallel Operation of DC Generators
Generators are connected in parallel in order to avoid overloading
the generators since each generator in each parallel operation will
share a common load.
Requirements:
-equal magnitude of terminal voltage
-same terminal polarity
-same type of dc generator

supplying a common load of 2000A. If the induced emf of the
generators are 250V and 260V, find the common terminal voltage
Two dc shunt generators are operating in parallel supplying a total of 25kW. The
induced emfs of the generators are 120V, 115V, the armature resistances are
0.05, and 0.04 ohms, and the shunt field resistances are 20 ohms and 25 ohms.
