RMS Titanic
The sinking of the Titanic on April 12, 1912 is known to the world as the one of the greatest maritime tragedies of all time. The loss of over
1.500 people who perished in the icy waters of the North Atlantic was profound, resulting in regulations mandating sufficient lifeboats for
everyone on board, establishment of the International Ice Patrol and manning a ship‘s wireless station around the clock. “Safety first” became a
way of life.

Until the discovery of the wreck on September 1, 1985, The Titanic Historical Society was primarily responsible for the keeping the Titanic
story alive along with a few books, an occasional magazine article, television and a few notable motion pictures. When Dr. Robert Ballard and
his team of French and American scientists located the RMS Titanic gravesite, interest in the vessel and her history soared. For decades now
after the discovery of the wreck of the Titanic, countless books, newspapers, video specials, and a major motion picture have chronicled the ill-
fated liner in both fact and fiction to the point that the ship has become an icon in modern popular culture.

Many people, including members of The Titanic Historical Society, recognized the value of offering a quality large-scale model representing
the Titanic. Work on the project began in the early 1970s using reference information provided by the Titanic Historical Society and blueprints
supplied by Harland & Wolff, the builders of the Titanic and her sister ships Olympic and Britannic. The model kit that evolved into the current
Minicraft 1/350 scale Titanic was first offered for sale in 1976 and remained virtually unchanged until 1997.

In 1997 the movie “TITANIC” by James Cameron was released. Interest in the ship reached new heights and fascination in the Titanic and
events surrounding her loss continued. Further research gleaned from underwater photography of the wreck, engineering studies of the ship and
the causes of the disaster created a new body of knowledge that had not been available prior to the discovery of the Titanic on the bottom of the
North Atlantic. It was recognized that the kit designed in 1974 contained errors that could not have been anticipated until new information was
brought to light.

With new information available and with the contribution of many, the Minicraft Models 1/350 scale replica of the Titanic was revised to
reflect new information that corrected the original design. An expression of thanks is especially well deserved to the following individuals: Art
Braunschweiger, Ken Marschall, Loren Perry, Sean Winterberg, Jacob B. Groby III Roy Mengot, Bruce Beveridge, Bob Read and Mike and
Steve Pell for making their research available to update Minicraft Model Kits’ RMS Titanic. To date over 50 changes were made including a
new Forecastle Deck, skylights, the center anchor, porthole corrections near the bow, modification of the well decks and corrected decals and
flag sheet. Reference information can also be found at the Titanic Research & Modeling Association website: http://www.titanic-model.com

Using the latest information contemporary research has made available, the Minicraft Model Kits’ 1/350 scale RMS Titanic is the only kit
available that accurately represents the famous ocean liner as the ship appeared on the fateful night of April 12, 1912.

Assembly Hints and Tips
If this is your first model kit, please read the assembly and painting instructions carefully before starting construction. Before starting each step
carefully review the assembly procedure and positively identify the parts used for each step.

Painting:
You can significantly add to the realism of the model if you choose to paint your model. Though we have molded many parts in color, painting
is recommended for best results. We recommend that small parts be painted before removing from parts tree. Painting recommendations are
shown at each step throughout the instruction manual. Required paint colors are listed in the Titanic Color Guide Suggestions section of this
booklet. This kit may be painted using either enamel or acrylic paint but we strongly recommend using paint manufactured for use on plastic
model kits. Refer to close up photographs shown on the side of the box for painting reference.

Cutting and Trimming:

Runners, also known as trees or “sprues”, join individual parts. Small connection points are called “gates”. When removing parts, cut part off at
the gate using a hobby knife or “nippers’ sometimes referred to as “sprue” cutters. Then with an emery board or fine sandpaper remove any
rough edges that might remain. Remove parts only as needed. Cut and remove parts carefully - parts can be easily lost when cut from the sprue
since they often snap with some force and fly in unintended directions. It is best to keep parts held in place or captured under a rag or paper
towel as they are cut from the sprue.

Railing and ratline preparation:

In order to produce the railings and ratlines as fine as possible, flash gating has been used. This leaves a thin strip of plastic under the rail that
must be cut away. To remove the rail sharp scissors or a hobby knife must be used. Cut away from the edge of the rail leaving a surplus to be
trimmed off or sanded after removal. To enhance the detail molded into railings, we recommend sanding or scraping the back of the part with
the back edge of a hobby knife blade thin each railing section. This technique will yield open spacing between the bars of the railings. If you
break a piece of railing in this process the pieces can be glued back together. Hold the pieces of railing face down against a small block of wood
or cutting mat. Then sand or scrape the backside until the spacing between the bars is more visible.

Bending the railings:

At various stages in assembly, it is required that the railings funnel ladders or tubing sections be bent to the proper shape. The easiest way is to
warm the plastic parts in hot water, then gently and gradually bend the railing section to the desired shape. To make a sharp bend, some
modelers soften the plastic at the bend with a drop of liquid cement then bend the railings and let it dry in the proper shape.

Rigging:
For much greater realism, the kit contains monofilament thread instead of fuzzy fiber/fabric thread. More than enough monofilament has been
included but should you require more, transparent or gray nylon, or fly-tying thread canbe obtained where ever sewing or freshwater fishing
supplies are sold.
3
Cementing:
Though cement in tubes is readily available, we highly recommend the use of liquid cement or a small bottle with a needle- tube applicator
nozzle. Cement to small parts can be applied with the end of a toothpick to avoid applying too much. CA (Cynoacrylate) glue, commonly
referred to as “Super glue” is also effective for kit construction but bonds almost immediately. If using CA cement, the high-viscosity (slowbonding)
type should be used. Care must be used since CA glue will also bond skin in seconds. ALL glue must be used sparingly since excess
glue will detract and damage small details. New adhesives are now available that use ultraviolet light to cure the adhesive after application.
These new UV cure adhesives can be used and often prove to be especially useful on small parts and in tight spaces.

Decals:
Decals should be applied at various steps in the assembly as shown in the assembly instructions. Follow instructions accordingly but always
remove just that portion of decal needed for each step. Soak that portion of the decal in water until the decal loosens from the paper backing and
can be moved by gently sliding from the backing paper to the plastic part. Do not soak until the decal floats off the paper into the water. Gently
remove any bubbles or wrinkles from the decal with a wet Q-tip or tissue before it dries in position. Decal setting solutions should be used to
soften the decal to improve the decal’s ability to conform to the contours of the model.

Steps 27 through 36 concern the cutting, gluing and placing of the plastic
railings included in the kit. If you are using the Photoetched railing set,
27 please consult the insert included for instructions and ignore steps 27-36.

Railings have a lower edge to aid gluing. Advanced

modelers may elect to remove this lower edge to more
accurately represent the correct railing height. Note
that the gluing edge is not included in the number of
rails in further steps, such as ''C20 (2 rails)" but is
illustrated.

Please note that some railing segments will be bent from one piece; others will
be assembled from short sections. Diagrams will show our recommended
assembly technique. A set of dividers will be helpful to measure railing segment
To bend railings, grasp with smooth pliers at the bend lengths.

sharp bend. Round bends can be made by rolling the
railing around a finger or rod and applying gentle
pressure.
All railings are White, including the tops.
