Assignment – 2 CSE

1. With the help of usual expression explain, beam, diffuse, reflected

solar radiation on the tilted surfaces.
2. Define the following with the help of sketch. i) Latitude ii)
Declination angle iii) surface azimuth angle iv) hour angle v)
Zenith angle vi) surface azimuth angle
3. Describe solar pond for solar energy collection and storage.
4. List the different type of concentrating collectors. Explain any one
of them with neat sketch.
5. With the help of sketch, explain thermal storage wall, roof storage
w r t passive solar heating.
6. Name the different types of solar thermal power cycles and explain
any one type with a neat sketch.
7. Determine the angle made by beam radiation with the normal to a
flat panel at New Delhi on Dec 5 at 1000 hours (LAT). The flat
panel is tilted an angle of 300 with the horizontal and is pointing
due south. The latitude and longitude for New Delhi is 20 035’ N,
77012’E
8. Determine the local apparent time and declination at a location
latitude 23015’N, longitude 77030’E at 1230 IST on June 22,
Equation of time correction = - (1’01’’). (Note : In IST longitude is
82.50)
9. Calculate the day length on a horizontal surface at New Delhi
(28035’ N, 77012’E) on Dec 1.
10. Calculate the sun’s altitude angle and azimuth angle on
August 1st for a location at 400N latitude at 7.30 am solar time.
11. Calculate the sun’s altitude angle and azimuth angle at 40 0N
latitude at 3.30 pm IST on Nov 21st.
12. Determine the average value of solar radiation on a
horizontal surface for June 22, at the latitude of 10 0N. Given values
of constants ‘a’ and ‘b’ are 0.3 and 0.51 respectively and the ratio
n--/N=0.55
13. Estimate the daily global radiation on a horizontal surface at
Ahmedabad (220N, 73010’E) as March 16 if the average sunshine
hours per day are 9.5. The values of constants ‘a’ and ‘b’ for
Ahmedabad are 0.28 and 0.48 respectively.
