FLY-BY-WIRE PHILOSOPHY

The main differences between mechanical and electrical controls are as follows:

• Control column replaced by side stick

• Mechanical channel replaced by electrical wiring and computers


¾ Redundant computers transmit pilot input and auto pilot commands
¾ Computers elaborate flight control laws

• Auto-pilot commands directly transmitted to the computers


• Modulated artificial feel replaced by side stick centering spring
• Mechanical feedback of conventional servo actuator

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

BASIC A330/A340

The Electrical Flight Control System (EFCS) is constituted of items which lead to control the A/C
behaviour, path and speed in manual mode :
• Flying gears : side sticks, pedal, rudder trum, …
• Pilot transmission and treatment gears
¾ Cables, in case of mechanical control (rudder, THS)
¾ Computers and electrical wires in case of electrical control
• Servo control, to position the surfaces
The computers transmit orders from the pilots to the servo controls and ensure the following functions:
• Control of the servo controls
• Contain the flight control laws (aircraft stability improvement, aircraft protection from over control)
