UNDERSTAND
Observing Correct Grammar in Making Definitions

What is grammar and why it is important to have a correct grammatical structure both in oral and
written English?

Grammar is the whole system and structure of a language. Observing correct grammar is very
important in oral communication, academic and expository writings as it helps you convey information
effectively so that the listeners and readers will clearly understand the message that is being conveyed.
Definitions are used in expository writing such as researches, scientific and legal texts. It is also used
in essays and other text types in order to make ideas and concepts clearer. In defining a term, you
actually answer the question “What is A?”

One way to define terms is through full definition. This is composed of a term to define, the general
class to which the term belongs and a distinguishing characteristic which separates the term from the
other members of the same class.

Study the pattern below:

Term = Class + distinguishing characteristic

A is/are B which/that/of C
is defined as
refers to

Example: Linguistics is the systematic study of language structure and development.

Term = Class + distinguishing characteristic

Take note that:

 A= The term defined is placed at the beginning of the sentence followed by the verb.
Note that the subject (term defined) and verb must agree in number, that is, a singular subject
needs a singular verb and a plural subject needs a plural verb.
 B= the class of the term being defined and
 C= its distinguishing characteristic.
