Rivet

 Rivet consists of cylindrical body called as shank with a

rounded end called head.
 The purpose of rivet:
 To join together two plates while securing proper tightness and
strength.
 Two type of rivet:
 Hot driven rivet :- rivet is heated before place in the hole.
 Cold driven rivet :- rivet is not heated
2.4 Riveted: Design of Riveted Joints
for Different Modes of Loading and
Rivets Failures
Two type of riveted joint:
 Lap joint

 Butt joint (or double shear joint)

2.4 Riveted: Design of Riveted Joints
for Different Modes of Loading and
Rivets Failures
 Four type of failure:
 Shearing failure or rivet

 Tensile failure of rivet

 Bearing failure of rivet

 Shearing failure at the edge of plate

2.4 Riveted: Design of Riveted Joints
for Different Modes of Loading and
Rivets Failures
Shear of Rivets/Bolts due to Eccentric Loading

The load is applied eccentrically to a

connection having a group of rivets or bolts.
The effects of moment and direct force must
be considered.
For example:
2.4 Riveted: Design of Riveted Joints
for Different Modes of Loading and
Rivets Failures

Important
notes!!
The FBD on
each rivet
must be
clearly shown
in your
answer!!
r1- radial distance of rivet 1 from CG
r2- radial distance of rivet 2 from CG
r3- radial distance of rivet 3 from CG
r4- radial distance of rivet 4 from CG
2.4 Riveted: Design of Riveted Joints
for Different Modes of Loading and
Rivets Failures
• Each bolt is subjected to twisting moment,
M=Pe and a direct shear force, P.
• These loading are transferred to centroid C
of the group.
• The reactional direct shear forces acting at
each bolts.
• The reactional tangential force due to
moment acts on a bolt varies with the
distance from the centroid C and is
perpendicular to the centroid.
2.4 Riveted: Design of Riveted Joints
for Different Modes of Loading and
Rivets Failures
• These forces can be obtained from equation:
Per1
F1 
r12  r22  r32  r42 Important notes!!
Tangential shear
forces must always
• In general form: acting perpendicular
Mr j to the radial
Fi  distance, r of each
 nj 1r j2 rivet

• Fi = tangential force
• M = Pe; externally applied moment
• n = number of bolts
• i = particular bolt whose load is to be found
2.4 Riveted: Design of Riveted Joints
for Different Modes of Loading and
Rivets Failures
The reactional direct force (F/n) is the
same for all bolts of the joint.
The vectorial sum of the tangential force and
direct force is the resultant shear force on
the bolt.
Only the bolt having a maximum resultant
shear force need to be considered.

Important notes!!
Each rivet is subjected to two kind of shear forces
(i) Direct shear force
(ii) Tangential shear force
These two forces will produce a resultant force on each rivet
Example
A gusset plate is attached to a column by three identical bolts and
vertically loaded as shown. The dimensions are in millimeter.
i. Draw the FBD of the gusset plate below
ii. Calculate the corresponding shear force and tangential force at
each bolt.
Exercise 1

(i) The riveted connection as shown in Figure 1 supports a load P. The

allowable rivet shear stress are 100MPa. The distance, d = 90 mm.
Determine the value of the load P.

Figure 2

Extra Question
Redo question (i) if the Figure 2 is rotated to left 90o
From your answer, is there any difference between these two situations? Explain
Exercise 2

A bracket in the form of plate is fitted to a column by mean of four rivets a shown in
Figure 2. An eccentric load P of 5000 N is applied to the bracket. Determine:
(i)The centroid of the rivet assembly from rivet S
(ii)The force on most heavily loaded in the bracket
(iii)The value of A if maximum shear stress of the rivet is 100 MPa

Figure 2
Exercise 3 (Final Exam, June 2018)

A riveted joint, consisting of four rivets is subjected to an eccentric force, P of 5 kN

act at the angle of 30° to the horizontal as shown. Determine :
i. The centroid of the rivets assembly from rivet 4
ii. The forces at rivet 2 and 3
iii. The maximum shear stress if A is 510 𝑚𝑚

Given :
Area of rivet 1 = A
Area of rivet 2 = 2A
Area of rivet 3 = A
Area of rivet 4 = 4A
All dimensions in mm.
