Check hardware compatibility with operating system

Hardware compatibility can refer to the compatibility of computer hardware
components with a particular CPU architecture, bus, motherboard or operating
system. Hardware that is compatible may not always run at its highest stated
performance, but it can nevertheless work with legacy components.

Computer hardware components

The most essential hardware components are Motherboard, CPU, RAM memory, IO
system, power supply, video display controller, Bus and hard disk drive. Some of the
normal hardware parts you see like a mouse, keyboard, monitor and CPU are the
basic components of a computer.

CPU architecture
In computer engineering, computer architecture is a set of rules and methods that
describe the functionality, organization, and implementation of computer systems. The
architecture of a system refers to its structure in terms of separately specified
components of that system and their interrelationships.

Bus
A bus is a high-speed internal connection. Buses are used to send control signals and
data between the processor and other components.

Motherboard
The motherboard is the backbone that ties the computer's components together at one
spot and allows them to talk to each other. Without it, none of the computer pieces,
such as the CPU, GPU, or hard drive, could interact. Total motherboard functionality
is necessary for a computer to work well.

Operating system
An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It
manages the computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and
hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how
to speak the computer's language. Without an operating system, a computer is
useless.

How check hardware compatibility with operating system?

Microsoft has developed a website where you can check the compatibility of hardware
and software with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows
RT operating systems. Check compatibility at Microsoft's Windows compatibility
center.

If you're buying a new device or upgrading an existing computer, it's important to check
this because current software and hardware may not work with the newer operating
systems.

For example, if you want to check your favorite software's compatibility:

1. Go to Microsoft's Windows compatibility center.

2. In the drop-down menu in the top right corner, select an operating system.
3. Type the software name in the Search box and click Search.
4. On the results page, find the software version you're interested in. If applicable,
click it for more information.

Windows RT is a slightly different version of Windows 8 designed for tablet devices.

Current versions of software most likely will not work on Windows RT.
