Students athletes – The students will have an idea on how will they catch up in every

activities they need to do and how to manage their time. This study will benefit them by

giving them a knowledge about the time management, what can be the effect of this

struggles in their mental health

Teacher –The result of this study will help the teacher to provide guidance, encourage

them to do their best and this will also help them to know what can be the possible effect

of struggles in their students mental and emotional health.

Coach –The result of this study will help the coach to understand the situation of their

athletes and this will also help them to motivate and guide their athletes.

Future Researcher –This study will benefit the future researchers by helping them to

understand more about the struggles of the student athletes. Also this research will be

their guide if they would wish to conduct the same study.

School Administration -

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the struggles encountered by student athletes.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions.

1.What are the common challenges faced by student athletes?

2.What are the strategies used by the student athletes in balancing their academic

performance?

3.Whar are the reflections of student athletes?

Theoretical Support

This study is anchored from the theoretical support of Promoting Achievement in

School through Sport theory or PASS theory, The PASS theory is establish in 1992 by

american sport institute in 2015, a non profit educational organization. It stated that

athletics is a guide or study that helps student improve in classroom and as on the playing

ground. It also says in both academic and athletic pursuits students will improve their

studies, balance of their time, maintaining regular schedules and activities, establish

better their relationships with teachers and classmate, and they can exert amounts of

power without undue stress.

Scope and Delimitation

This research study focuses on knowing the Challenges faced by the student athletes of

Tanza National Comprehensive High School. This study also aims to identify the

common challenges faced by these student athletes and what are their reflections and also

the straregies they used in balancing their academic performance. This study main

purpose is to determine and identify the challenges of student athlete when it comes to

their academics and athletics.

The participants of this study are Senior High School student athletes in Tanza

National Comprehensive High School for the school year 2022-2023. The participants of

this study must be a student athlete. therefore, participants that is not a student athlete is

not included in this study

This also aims to explore the common challenges faced by the student athletes. The

researchers will conduct an interview to collect and to gathered data through

questionnaires and face to face interactions. Each of the participants will have the same

questionnaires to answer and a same questions will be asked to each participants

Definition of Terms

Struggles - is like forcing your self to put an effort in the face of difficulties.

Student athletes – it is the student who participate in sport or in an competitive sport

sponsored by their school

Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes the research and works related to the study to be undertaken and

will be used as a guide by the researcher in conducting the study.

STUDENT ATHLETES

According to Anselmo, (2021), Student athletes are in the company of upper groups of

individuals in the school by their position as a student athlete, they are recognize also as a

good example to everyone. In addition student athletes are also a student at the same time

and face a lot of everyday challenges that fellow athletes also face, these athletes have to

carry the pressure and expectation of their school that has been place in their shoulder.

The wins and defeats of these athletes are publicly and criticized by many people so they

need to perform well (Mcquade, 2021). Futhermore, athletes need to follow the steps and

rules of the sport event for them to prepare and perform excellent (Grimit, 2014).

Additionally, despite of being a student athlete and for all the achievements and the

hardwork that they put in the field of athletics they still not given enough attention

(Garcia, 2018). Futhermore, some of the student athletes are criticized as some of their

fellow athletes see that its not fair that those chosen athletes are get to study for free

while the others need to pay. As for The Catalyst, (2021), Athletes are the pride to every

school or country but they are struggling financially by the lack of financial support from

the local government and only be given attention when they give pride to their school or

even in their country

STRUGGLES OF STUDENT ATHLETE


According to Kassim, (2019), academic success is recognize by having a good grades

however, what about the student athletes who is under pressure and struggle with their

personal and dual status as a student and athlete, by this pressure student athletes

experiencing mental health issues.

Mental health define as a condition of mental well being that authorize or enables

people to survive with the stresses of life. Pressure is often felt by student athlete,

carrying the expectations of their team mates, coaches, teachers, and parents can

adversely affect their performance not only in sports, but also in academics (Baltasar,

2021). Furthermore, Baltasar, (2021), states that pressure can result in stress, and

eventually trauma that can cease their performance on sports participation. However,

some of the student athletes do not take academics as a prime concern (Shuman, 2009)

because their general target is to make the next step on their sport (McDougle & Capers,

2012).

In recent times, there has been an uptick in the use of mobile gaming as a coping

mechanism for stress relief among athletes. According to a study by (Ellis et al., 2020),

participants reported utilizing video games for emotional coping, stress reduction,

relaxation, and alleviation of mental health concerns, in addition to seeking an escape

during the pandemic and as a form of entertainment. In line with this, many athletes in

another study by (Lim & Pranata, 2021) also expressed an inclination towards home-

based training as an alternative way to maintain their fitness and health amid the

pandemic. They mentioned engaging in home workouts to keep themselves fit and

healthy.

A key aspect of 21st-century education is the recognition of the important role that

sports play in enhancing lifelong skills and values, as well as promoting good health and

well-being. This is according to the (UNESCO, 2019), which highlights sports'

significant impact on personal development and social coherence. As such, education

should prioritize providing students with opportunities to participate in and engage with

sports, not only for physical well-being but also to cultivate social, emotional and

cognitive skills that will serve them in both personal and professional aspects of their

lives. Sport is not only essential for overall health, but it also fosters important skills such

as teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving that can be applied to a wide range of

professions and endeavors, enhancing students' overall capabilities.

Ahmed (2017) highlights the importance of academic excellence and the advantages it

can bring in achieving great honor, unusual access, and the opportunity to not start at the

very bottom. Academic excellence can enhance one's reputation and perception, leading

to increased opportunities, access, and greater influence in various spheres of life. It can

also open doors to leadership positions rather than starting at the bottom, which can

provide an advantage in career progression. These benefits emphasize the value of

academic excellence and the need to continually hone one's skills and knowledge in order

to achieve success and make a positive impact in society.

According to (Velasco, 2021), elite athletes often encounter obstacles that hinder their

performance and progress. These challenges often stem from a lack of leadership,

direction, and competence on the part of their national sports associations. During the

pandemic, this issue has been heightened, as some athletes have been denied training

opportunities while their teammates have been able to travel and improve their skills,

with the excuse of quarantine. This has resulted in a selective approach to training and

developing athletes in certain sports, further exacerbating the issue of uneven support and

opportunities for athletes. The pandemic has shined a light on the need for improved

leadership, direction, and competence within national sports associations to ensure that

all athletes have equal access to training and development opportunities.

According to (Bailey, 2009) In today's academic world, academic performance is often

measured through grades, which reflect the student's achievement of program goals,

milestones, and objectives. However, academic performance is not solely dependent on

grades, as it also encompasses a student's ability to manage their academics and finish

tasks, including data processing, retention, and communication skills. One study suggests

that students who are more interested in class have better classroom learning and

academic achievement.

Synthesis

Academic and athletic participation involves the development of skill and learning of a

student. In the conclusion, being a student athlete is not easy your own success is in your

shoulder as well as your education. A lot of challenges and struggles may come to you at

the same time but you have the power to chose whether to face it or not. Some studies

showed that athletes better to use time management skills to help them to overcome ang

catch up those challenges. It maybe challenging and circumstances may occur but still

they try to face it even if there’s a chance of failing.

Chapter III
METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This research will apply Basic Qualitative Research design to answer the research

questions. According to Kothari, (2004), research design can be defined as a plan,

structure, and strategy of research to find out alternative tools to solve the problems and

to minimize the variances. This research is phenomenology it seeks to gain information

and insights of student athletes in Tanza national comprehensive high school who is

experiencing struggles, This research design will help the researchers to examine and

determine the struggles of student athletes in Tanza national comprehensive high school.

Participants and Sampling

The respondents of the study would be more appropriate by using purposive sampling

technique.

A purposive sample is a non-probability sample that is selected based on

characteristics of a population and the objective of the study. According to Arikunto

(2010), purposive sampling is where a researcher selects a sample based on the needs

about the study

The researchers will have a sample of (10) student athletes to participate in the study.

In this study, the required respondents will be the student athletes studying in Tanza

National Comprehensive High School that somehow struggles in coping and maintaining

their education and studying capability while being a varsity at the same time

Research Instrument

The researchers will conduct an interview with the students athletes who struggle with

their academic performance. An interview protocol will be made to serve as a guide for

the researchers during the process of collecting the data. First, it will begin by introducing

yourself and explaining the purpose of the interview. Let the student athlete know that

you are conducting research on the experiences of student athletes who have faced

challenges, and that their participation is voluntary and anonymous.

Ask the student athlete to provide some background information about themselves,

such as their name, age, sport, level of competition, and any relevant accomplishments.

Ask the student athlete to describe any struggles they have faced in their athletic journey.

Data Collection Techniques and Procedure

The researchers will use semi structured interview to gathered data. Formal in depth

semi structured interview, researchers is be in need of to develop a set of pre-established

questions and have a permit to ask follow up questions if needed (Heighem, J., & Croker,

R. 2009). This kind of data collection technique is suitable to the study because it will

help and authorize the researchers to have an in depth understanding about the struggles

of student athlete in their academic.

In this study the researchers will conduct an interview in each of the respondents which

will have to use about 20 to 30 minutes per session. This will be done by the accessibility

of the respondents. In conducting the interview researchers will abide by the process

stated in the interview.

Transcription

The entire interview with all of the participants will be video recorded or audio

recorded with their permission. It will be use to help researchers not to missed something

from the participants. The researchers will start record voice recordings with the support

of the otransribed web application. It will aid to slow down, pause, and replay audio for

the researchers to hear the sound clearly, and also it will give them enough time to write

using Microsoft word. While audio recording other researchers will take note some

important details as their plan B.

Data Analysis

Trustworthiness

To assured the trustworthiness of the study the researchers will use the guidelines set

by Lincoln and Guba (1985), it stated that the trustworthiness of the research study is

important to assess its worth and initiate the credibility, transferability, dependability, and

confirmability

To initiate credibility the researchers will go back to the respondents of the study to

verify the findings. The response from the respondents will gonna be use and include into

the final analysis.

To initiate dependability, the researchers will use outer inspection, the outer inspection

are those individuals who will review the codes driven from the data also known as inter

coding. All of the recommendations of the intercoder will be include into the final

analysis

In establishing confirmability, the researchers will include sufficient or suitable excerpts

or block quotes from the participants interview data which will assists the researchers

interpretation and findings (Lincoln and Guba , 1985).

Ethical Considerations

The researcher must adhere to ethical principles in all of their research endeavors. In

doing qualitative research for this study, the researchers guarantee that they won’t break

any established ethical rules.

It will be guaranteed that the plan will go through evaluation and approval by the

school administration before the study is carried out. Before providing any data, all

participants will be required to sign informed consent forms indicating their agreement to

the study’s terms. This study’s participants’ participation is entirely voluntary.

Throughout the course of the program, they are free to leave at any time.

Finally, confidentiality and anonymity shall be upheld. It will be the responsibility of

the researchers to maintain the respondents’ anonymity during the course of the study. In

no way will their names be made public. Only the researchers will have access to the

recordings created during the interview in order to maintain the confidentiality of the

material. After the study is over, it will be destroyed.
